Domestic Bliss: Zen Garden-Style Living Room Atrium Space Posted: 02 Oct 2012 10:00 AM PDT [ Filed under Living & Dining & in the Interiors category ] Back yards are only so private, and in some cities, most people do not have space for one anyway. So how do you make your house feel like a home when limited to indoor improvements? ALTS Design Office designed this Japanese residence with plenty of windows to bring in light and connect residents to the outdoors, but also established a lovely two-story open space with greenery, rocks and a walkway to make it feel like garden. What is remarkable in this, but in some ways typical of the region, is how a few sparse-seeming elements create a sense of organic minimalism – not the sometimes-inhumane absence of detail often associated with high modernist homes. While most of the core elements remain practical and linear, the few curves and natural details help break up the rigidity of the otherwise-conventional a-frame format. Shape-Shifting Wood Fan Table Changes Squares to Circles Posted: 01 Oct 2012 04:00 PM PDT [ Filed under Tables & Stands & in the Furniture category ] Most extension tables require adding leaves, and at best go from being a short rectangle to a longer one. This one by Mauricio Affonso changes shape entirely. By shifting out base supports in the core frame, more area can suddenly be covered by the table as it bends its top bends into a circular shape. Or, like a more conventional pull-out variant, frame pieces can be added below while it is pulled apart to simply become a larger and longer table. “The FAN Table explores the role of tables as the infrastructure for social interaction. Created from over 400 slats, the table can be quickly transformed into an array of different shapes and sizes to suit its context or use. The surface can freely expand, contract and revolve in an effortless fan like movement of the hand. The FAN Table was exhibited at the Royal College of Art ‘s PARADISE exhibition during the Salone Internazionale del Mobile. Venture Lambrate, Milan 2012.” [ Filed under Tables & Stands & in the Furniture category ] [ Dornob | Archives | Categories | Privacy | TOS ] |
