Concrete and Glass Home “Floats” on Serene Reflection Pool Posted: 09 Jun 2014 08:00 AM PDT This ethereal home in La Jolla, California is a series of contradictory and opposing elements that come together to create a harmonious and zen-like retreat. It is made of cast-in-place concrete and contains vast floor-to-ceiling windows that open the home up to the world around it. The Cresta from Jonathan Segal Architects balances the heaviness of concrete, the airiness of glass and open space, and the fluid serenity of water. Operable glass on the ground floor creates an outdoor room. Given the relatively small size of the interior part of the room, this feature adds a significant amount of living space. The home is surrounded on two sides by a reflecting/swimming pool which makes the home appear to float on the water. The pool also provides the home with passive cooling to lower energy consumption. Even the home’s concrete exterior serves a second purpose: its thermal mass gives the homeowners another way to keep their energy costs low. Additionally, a 6.5kw soar array on the roof supplies almost all of the energy the home needs, making this home not only beautiful but beautifully eco-friendly as well. |
The Terrapin: Tiny Handmade Wooden Camping Trailer Posted: 08 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT Who would want to tow a big plastic factory-made camper around when they could have a charming hand-crafted tiny home? The Terrapin by Casual Turtle Campers is a compact and comfortable place to camp with a design inspired by the small trailers of the 1950s and ’60s. Mounted to a 5′x8′ trailer frame and weighing in at 1,360 pounds, the Terrapin is portable enough to go nearly anywhere but spacious enough for a dinette that transforms into a double memory foam bed so it’s comfortable for both sitting and sleeping. Five windows, power outlets, a storage chest and a small counter give it a homey feel that’s often missing in typical camper trailers. The windows let in lots of natural light and fresh air so you can take in the sights, sounds and smells of your chosen surroundings. Featuring fully-insulated floors, roof and walls, the Terrapin won’t get too hot or cold with temperature fluctuations, and clever LED crown molding lighting provides illumination at night without using up too much power. |
