Football & Technology: The Best Apps For The 2014 World Cup Posted: 10 Jun 2014 11:29 AM PDT Sports & gadgets are fundamental parts of our every day lives, and as such, of course they’d interact in many ways. With the world cup looming on the horizon, now is the perfect time to discuss those apps that will make the watching process more enjoyable. Check out our selection. FIFAWe couldn’t help but start out with the official FIFA app. This is a free app that includes an international news section, their renowned match center with over 197 leagues around the world, FIFA’s rankings, and other goodies. They have an ongoing countdown to the World Cup and all the latest information on the 32 participants. You can get it on both Android and iOS, but be warned: it’s not that well optimized and it might slog on even some modern devices. Forza FootballThis is a fantastic app for both iPod & iPad and Android devices. The app is free, and includes live scores, opinion polls, and video content for a bunch of leagues world-wide. This is more than just a score app (and a great one at that), Forza Football is also a fantastic social experience and space where to share opinions, joys and sorrows with other like-minded fans. Onefootball BrasilEveryone who cares about football and technology knows already of Onefootball app, an Android & iOS app that is incredibly comprehensive if users follow more than one league. This special World Cup version, though, is way more steamlined and focus: it enables you to pick one specific team to follow on the World Cup, and displays their schedules, news, match results, odds, and line-ups. This doesn’t just apply to the teams but to players’ individual performances and twitter feeds. Still, our favorite bit has to be the historical section, where they detail what went on on past World Cups. Present, past & future in just one app. FanChantsThis app is truly a work of love, with lots of research and investigation put on it. FanChants is an Android exclusive, as of now, that has over 20,000 football chants archived in it. They’re all free to listen to, but also will display the lyrics on your language so you know what those crazy South American fans are yelling about. Fantasy iTeamTalk about gamification! Fantasy iTeam lets users create their own fantasy team, with all 736 players from the 32 teams, and earn points based on their actions. Once the iTeam has been set up, you can join a private league with your friends, or public ones and aim for the highest score. Sure, those points serve no purpose but bragging rights… but aren’t those the best rights of them all? Be social! Sony E3 2014: A Great Showing Of Diverse Games Posted: 10 Jun 2014 08:32 AM PDT Sony stepped up to the plate on Monday night to present what it had in store for its PlayStation platforms in 2014 and beyond. And it was a lot.
The first day of E3 2014 has come to a close with Sony’s E3 press conference. And from start to end, minus a few diversions here and there talking about “services” and “television content”, Sony Computer Entertainment brought out a sharp, laser-focused array of video games. Lots of them. All from within Sony and from third-parties big and small. That’s business as usual around E3 time, of course. But more so in regards to Sony’s “for the gamers” mantra they so boldly claim. With that said, let’s get right down into what was shown during their E3 show. E3 HYPE TRAIN SET COURSE! DestinyFrom the start was Bungie’s Destiny, the sci-fi shooter from the former Halo developers that looks in fine form judging by its latest trailer. It shows off the game’s “Humans terraforming Mars” lore and in-game action. Sony also announced that the Destiny beta will first hit the PlayStation 4 on July 17, with a "first look" alpha coming to console this Thursday, June 12 that fans can get into through Greatnessawaits.com/Destiny. Sony also announced a Destiny PlayStation 4 bundle that will go on sale September 9, which comes packed with a white PS4 console – that looks quite pretty (and also like a giant white chocolate Kitkat) – and a copy of Bungie shooter. The Order: 1886Despite the bad news of it being delayed to early 2015, Sony still moved forward with studio Ready at Dawn’s first crack at their own PlayStation 4 release by showing a new trailer for The Order: 1886. The cover-shooter blends a lot of fictional items – survival-horror and steam-punk Victorian-era England in particular – that sets itself up nicely for its upcoming release next year. EntwinedNext, Sony surprised us with a marvelous-looking game for the PS4 where you control an abstract flying dragon on a tale about love. The even more surpassing thing though, was the news that this small-team made title would be available today, June 9, for $10. And true to their word, the game can be bought buy right now through the PlayStation Store. Check out its trailer below and see if it warrants a purchase. InFamous: First LightHot on the heels of its March release, Sucker Punch is pushing out more content for inFamous: Second Son with a DLC expansion called inFamous: First Light. No worries if you haven’t got around to playing Second Son (but do so anyway, because its good and all), First Light is a standalone title that you can buy separately on the PS4 soon. LittleBigPlanet 3Sackboy is back with new cute friends and new fun levels to romp through in this latest installment for the PlayStation 4, coming in December. The game seems to be designed with friendly couch co-op in mind, as each new Sackboy pal comes with their own unique platforming talents. Better yet, LittleBigPlanet 3 invites players to not only discover the user-generated levels in this upcoming title, but also in LBP and LBP2 via backwards compatibility. BloodborneI’m quite certain you will die a whole flippin’ lot if there’s anything to by the trailer for the upcoming From Software title, which is joint project between Sony’s Japan Studio and the makers of the Dark Soul series. Bloodborne finely summons the developer’s great sense of making dark, brooding themes and should be something to behold (and feared difficulty wise) when it launches exclusively for the PS4 in 2015. Far Cry 4Ubisoft’s Far Cry 4 had a big spot at Sony’s presser with a new trailer that showed an exploding sample of vehicles, weapons, and rampaging elephants(?) within the game. There was also talk of an interesting PlayStation 4-only feature that allows folks who own the PS4 game to invite their friends to join them Far Cry 4 co-op missions even if that person doesn't own it. VIDEO TO ADD [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04z45SOAH5k] Dead Island 2You want more zombies? Well, deal with it because you’re getting them anyway via Deep Silver’s follow-up to their first zombie-smashing title in Dead Island 2. Thankfully, Deep Silver doesn’t try to take the genre seriously, and their trailer for it at Sony’s E3 presser represents that in laughing style. There’s also an exclusive 30-day online beta for the game in the works, too. VIDEO TO ADD [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ST262ZbNcos]Magika 2The sequel to the multiplayer dungeon-crawling role-playing game from Paradox Interactive is coming exclusively to the PlayStation 4 sometime this fall. Grim FandangoA remake/remaster of the classic adventure game from Double Fine is in the works for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. No release date yet. Let It DieSuda 51 (No More Heroes, killer7, Lollipop Chainsaw) is known for his crazy action titles, and his upcoming latest – developed alongside GunHo Online Entertainment - is no different. Let It Die is set for a PlayStation 4 release sometime in the near future. Indie SpotlightAhh… my favorite part of the show, especially from Sony, who has been the champion of Indie games for quite some time. Tonight they revealed a cool line-up of appealing titles such as Broforce, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, Not A Hero, Titan Souls, and The Talos Principle. AbzuThe creators of the soulful Journey on the PlayStation 3 are back with a new game for the PS4. And like before, the crew has once again recreated an amazing-looking visual and audio experience dealing with the wonders of the deep blue. Absolutely breathtaking. No Man’s SkyHello Games possibly stole the show this evening with their first full trailer for No Man’s Sky. My mouth dropped when I saw this future PS4 title in motion, seeing the game’s impressive, procedurally generated, massive sci-fi universe span out seamlessly from land to space (without immersion-breaking load times to boot), and I bet you probably will too. Project MorpheusSony’s virtual reality headset will have a small showing at E3, but it will be most tech demos for expo goers. Reportedly, all gaming-focused projects are still in development. Although, one bit of relevant info is that the head-mounted display will work with the PlayStation camera peripheral on the PS4. Free-to-Play GamesMore free-to-play games are on their way to PlayStation 4, with the likes of Planetside 2, Loadout, and tons more releasing for the console later this year. PlayStation NowSony's game-streaming service will launch on the PlayStation 4 starting July 31 as an open public beta. Afterwards at a later date, users on both the PlayStation 3 and PSVita will be able to then access and stream over 100 games from Sony and its third-party partners. There’s also plans for the service to launch on select Sony TV sets. PlayStation TVAnnounced last year at the Tokyo Game Show, the mini-console that allows remote play of PlayStation 4/PS3/PS Vita games on any TV its connected to will final make landfall in North America for $99. Sony will also sell a bundled version that comes with a Dual Shock 3 controller, an 8 GB memory card, and a voucher for The Lego Movie for for $139. Mortal Kombat XThe gameplay reveal for the next Mortal Kombat game from NetherRealms studios also showed up at Sony’s E3 presser – and yeah, it the typical blood-flying, bone-crushing fisticuffs the series has been know for. This time, it’s for next gen. PowersSony is producing a live-action television series based upon the Brian Michael Bendis comic book Powers, which releases on all PlayStation devices around December. For PlayStation Plus subscribers, the exclusive series will be free to watch for all who are members. Ratchet & Clank: The MovieInsomniac Game’s famed, space-adventuring duo is heading to the big screen with a full-length animated feature coming out in 2015. Alongside it, a reboot/reimagining of the first PlayStation 2 game in the 3D-platforming series is being developed. No clue on how that looks, but we do get to see an awesome trailer of the movie. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom PainHere’s a new trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, the tactical stealth game in the long-running popular series that is coming for both the PS4 and PS3 in 2015. Continuing from Ground Zeroes, the game continues to unfold the saga of Solid Snake’s legendary soldier papa, Big Boss. The trailer is all kinds of emo, but the kind I love dearly. Grand Theft Auto VRockstar Games is bring its hit open-world crime game Grand Theft Auto V to the PlayStation 4, which also lets PS3 owners transfer their current GTA Online save file over to the PS4. The Last of Us RemasteredThe enhanced PlayStation 4 port of 2013′s best game (of the forever) on the PlayStation 3 finally has set-in-stone release date for next month – July 29th. The title not only comes with The Last of Us, but also its fantastic expansion DLC, Left Behind. Batman: Arkham KnightBats, as I like to call him, is making his way to the PlayStation 4 as well, but sadly it won’t be until 2015 at the latest (that’s pretty much the theme of this year’s E3 with almost every game, everything is 2015). Here’s a nice trailer of the game to at least to keep us busy with for the time being. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s EndClosing out Sony’s E3 press conference was none other than Naught Dog studios and, of course, Uncharted 4. We get to see what feisty adventurer Nathan Drake is up to this time in this very brief story-set-up trailer, which was captured footage from a PlayStation 4. It looks fantastic. It’s also not out until 2015. *Sigh* Oh well. Bummer about that release date, but at least it’s something quite cool to look forward to – much like the full line-up of games Sony revealed tonight at their E3 2014 presentation. Take a bow Sony, you did good. Be social! Follow Walyou on Facebook and Twitter, and read more related stories at https://www.facebook.com/Walyou and https://twitter.com/walyou. |
Google Forms Partnership to Improve Fashion for Google Glass Posted: 10 Jun 2014 06:00 AM PDT Not everyone cares about fashion when it comes to their technology, but it’s a different story if it gets displayed along with your jewelry and clothes. Now that Google Glass is available to everyone, we can expect ownership to start to increase, but not too fast, considering each headset is still $1,500 dollars. Even though the opportunity to purchase Glass is not governed by the invite system, Glass till bears the “Explorer” tag, designating that it is still mostly intended for developers and is not yet a consumer product. When Glass does hit the mass market as a full blown consumer product, Google intends to make it–and other wearable products–as much of a standard accessory as possible, so Glass is no more out of place than a pair of glasses, a watch, a bracelet, or any other accessory. This is standard in wearable products evidenced by Android Wear’s partnership with brands such as Fossil and Apple’s trademark expansion to cover jewelry. Google has always had a fashion forward with Google Glass (at least as much as you can be with a camera on face), but Google’s newly announced partnership with Luxottica confirms this strategy moving forward. According to Luxottica’s press release:
Luxottica owns over 80% of the world’s major eyewear brands, including brands such as Oakley, Ray-Ban, Giorgio Armani, Versace, and Prada to just name a few. It may be quite a feat to design Glass so that the camera and Glass module are hidden, but it is not unrealistic for this partnership with Luxottica to incorporate Glass into stylish eyewear. So far, most wearables have found themselves in a sort of paradox, where the wearable is intended to replace a fashion accessory, but most wearables are not necessarily fashionable due usually to either size or design. If Glass is intended to be worn in place of glasses, then Glass must be able to function as a fashionable alternative to standard glasses, which is something this partnership with Luxottica will help accomplish. What we’ve seen of the Moto 360 so far suggests that it will indeed be not only a functional, but stylistically appealing accessory. As the hardware and software improve and developers and designers are able to do more with less, it will be easier and easier to incorporate technology into our every day fashion choices, but until then, we have partnerships such as Google and Luxottica to help us get there. Is The HTC One ‘Vogue Edition’ (E8) Really Worth Your Money? Posted: 10 Jun 2014 05:00 AM PDT As HTC prepares the launch the HTC One 'Vogue Edition' (E8), we ask if this smartphone on a budget is really worth the money?
Crikey, HTC have sure been busy as of late haven't they? In the last few months the Android handset makers du jour released their flagship HTC One (M8) handset which was a powerful and very considerable rival to the Samsung Galaxy S5 which was released a handful of weeks later. It seems that they aren't done in their efforts to sell even more of their generally quite brilliant devices at (thankfully) much smaller costs either and their latest attempt at such is via the HTC One 'Vogue Edition' (E8) which was also rumoured to be called the HTC One (M8) Ace and is potentially set to launch worldwide in just a few weeks. But is it worth your consideration? In short, absolutely. Any time I point out a phone's similarities, particularly when said phones are made by the same company, that's usually a bad thing but with the HTC One 'Vogue Edition; (E8) being so similar to the HTC One (M8) that launched earlier this year, that's surprisingly not a bad thing whatsoever. In fact, it's actually very good for both you and me (and any other potential buyer) as its specs are near identical to the former albeit for around half the cost. Both phones have 2GB of RAM on 2.5Ghz/2.3Ghz Snapdragon quad-core processors (you'll get 2.5Ghz in China, handsets sold in other regions will get the still incredible speedy 2.3Ghz effort) and display things in wonderful 1080p HD on 5-inch 1,920 x 1,080 (441 ppi) screens. The only noticeable downgrades when it comes to the Vogue Edition is that it's only available with 16GB of internal storage it has a 13 megapixel camera on its rear instead of a 4 Ultrapixel one (but honestly, it's unlikely that you'll notice too much of a downgrade) and the Vogue Edition is also rather unfortunately plastic but it's still a fantastic option. And that, like the majority of our purchases, comes down to the price. Off the bat, with no deals or grandiose offers the HTC One' Vogue Edition' (E8) will cost you just $450 which is almost half that of the HTC One (M8) or the Samsung Galaxy S5 so while I wouldn't want to sway your purchase (it's important to do your research before you buy after all) the Vogue Edition's specs are those that most can live without so if I were you, I'd definitely save a few pennies and buy the cheaper handset. Straight From E3 2014: PS Vita TV to hit US stores in the fall Posted: 09 Jun 2014 08:27 PM PDT It’s official: Sony’s PS Vita TV is not a Japan exclusive any more, and from this fall onwards America will be able to enjoy the latest Sony console. These news just in, straight from Sony’s E3 2014 conference. The PS Vita is not a Japan exclusive any longer, as Sony confirmed that the console will be released from the American public. The PS Vita TV is meant to take the PS Vita experience to TV screens everywhere, but at the same time allow streaming from a PS4 to a second TV without having to buy a second console. That’s not all, as the PS Vita TV will be able to play most PSN games, PSOne classics, and everything playable on the PSP & Vita bare a few exceptions (probably the games using touch screen controls or gyroscopes, we imagine, so no Tearaway or Gravity Rush). The price of the PS Vita TV will be of $99 USD, while a special bundle including a Dualshock 3 and an online code for the LEGO The Movie game will retail at $139 USD, which is fantastic value. We await further clarification when it comes to other regions such as Europe, or Latin America. Be social! Trikelet, the World’s Smallest Foldable EV Makes Commuting a Breeze Posted: 09 Jun 2014 01:55 PM PDT Ever wanted to have a tricycle that’s no bigger than a suitcase when folded? Dutch-based Trikelet BV is about to make your dream come true, as their electric vehicles claimed the title of the world’s smallest foldable EV. The Trikelet electric vehicle is currently in the prototype stage. The 500-700 W motor that powers the current version can help travelers cover a distance of up to 15 km, at a top speed of 20 km/h. In terms of power consumption, Trikelet only needs 1 kWh for every 70 km, which really isn’t that much, so this vehicle is not compact and convenient, but also very economical. At 12 kg and 800 x 290 mm when unfolded, Trikelet is light and small enough to carry single-handedly. The clever folding mechanism helps people to pack it away quite easily. As I mentioned in the title, Trikelet is perfect for commuting. That is, if you don’t have to travel more than 15 km to get to work. However, if the distance between your workplace and your home is greater than that, you can easily fold Trikelet and use it as a piece of luggage while traveling by train. After all, this electric tricycle looks very much like a trolley bag while folded, so it will definitely be inconspicuous while folded. Trikelet BV claims that this vehicle is still work in progress, so it might take a while until it hits the market. In the development of this electric scooter, the manufacturer might require additional financing, so don’t be surprised if you see a crowdfunding campaign built around this product. The manufacturer estimates that the mass produced version will cost something between $1,400 and $2,000. I’m not sure what was the most expensive item featured on Kickstarter or Indiegogo, but this electric scooter definitely occupies a spot at the top. Check out the following video to see how the Trikelet looks and feels in real life situations:
I’m glad to see more and more eco-friendly vehicles coming out, as variety is the key to keeping all sorts of people happy. The ones who can’t afford buying an electric car might want to consider an electric vehicle such as Trikelet. In the ideal situation, all these electric vehicles would draw energy that was generated using renewable methods. Be social! Innovative CreoPop 3D Printing Pen Ditches Heat for UV Light Posted: 09 Jun 2014 01:16 PM PDT There is still room for improvements in the 3D printing field, as the creators of this pen suggest. Instead of heat, CreoPop uses UV light to make matter more adequate for 3D printing. 3D printers in the form of pens are definitely not a novelty, as these things have been around for a couple of years, now. However, researchers and inventors haven’t played around with the way raw materials are melted in order to give birth to new things. While heat is effective for melting polymers, it’s also quite dangerous, especially when used in such small devices as a 3D printing pen. With that in mind, the developers of the CreoPop pen thought that UV light could be a much safer solution CreoPop didn’t ditch only dangerous heat in the favor of UV light, but it also replaced traditional polymers with a liquid resin. As soon as this material is extruded from the pen, UV light cures and hardens it. As a consequence, the risk of skin burns is reduced to zero, fact that makes CreoPop adequate even for children. However, CreoPop is not without downsides. The meltable plastic used by conventional 3D printers is getting cheaper and cheaper, while the proprietary cartridges used by this pen cost between $2-3. Each of these can be used for making a 46-foot line of plastic. Forcing people to buy the company’s own refills brings to memory not only typical 3D printers, but also inkjet 3D printers, whose consumables often cost more than the device itself.
Speaking of the price of the device, CreoPop costs $89, or at least that’s how much the company making it will ask in the near future, when a crowdfunding campaign will be launched on Indiegogo. At that price, the 3D printing pen will come with 5 cartridges, and the expected shipping date is in Q1 2015. Admittedly, we’ve come a long way in this field, and I don’t refer only to how the materials are extruded from 3D printers. Now there are some 3D printers that use metals and even wood, others that print veins and ears, so it shouldn’t surprise us that advancements are made every day. After all, every different approach takes us closer to what might be the perfect 3D printer. Be social! Xbox E3 2014: Microsoft hits it out of the ballpark Posted: 09 Jun 2014 11:43 AM PDT Microsoft’s E3 2014 event has just ended, and the news on the Xbox side of things are all fantastic! Scroll down to learn what happened. What an exciting time to be a gamer. After the lackluster event Microsoft had at E3 2013, they had an uphill battle to remind gamers why it is that Xbox matters at all. Since the beginning of their 2014 press conference, they made it loud and clear: Xbox as a brand, and Xbox One as a console is all about games, and they had 90 minutes of uninterrupted games, creators and studios to show for it. TV wasn’t mentioned once, letting the games take the spotlight they should never have missed, and Microsoft didn’t just deliver the same old FPS games with exclusive, timed DLC, but a bunch of exclusives that make a serious case for the Xbox One to be a gamer’s console of choice. What they had to show went as follows: Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare The latest Call of Duty looked fantastic, and seemed to have more of a focus on atmosphere and ambiance instead of being the same shooter of every year. This gives us some hope that they might be up to something cool, although we don’t doubt for a second the frantic multiplayer shooting will be there just the way we remember it. Forza 5: Microsoft’s driving simulator looks sharper than ever. The creators thanked the fans for their continued success, and spoke of the great things to come. Evolve: Evolve is a game by the creators of Left 4 Dead, and it shows: the game is a co-op shooter where 4 players with different classes traverse a stage looking for a monster, controlled by a 5th player. The action looks simply frantic, and the monster reminds us of Cthulhu. Assassin’s Creed Unity: The new Assassin’s Creed game looks like will finally address the issue of allowing players to co-operate when it comes to carrying out the missions. The world (well, Paris) looks huge and populated, and as long as they fix the combat to adapt for the many potential players, this looks like a serious entry for the best title in the series. Dragon Age Inquisition: The latest Dragon Age really does look like a return to shape for the franchise, with an incredibly fluid an attractive combat. Time will tell if our prediction holds or not. Sunset Overdrive: Microsoft’s answer to Sony’s Infamous comes from a former Sony studio. It was created by Insomniac Games, the team behind Ratchet & Clank, and promises to have a lot of action but being quirky and funny instead of serious. Super Ultra Dead Rising 3 Arcade Remix Hyper Edition EX Plus Alpha Are you having trouble pronouncing that? We do too. This is a DLC for Dead Rising 3, which tributes many of the other Capcom franchises, Street Fighter being king among them. Fable Legends: The new entry in the Fable series has the blessing and the curse of not having Molyneux behind it. It looks like this entry is a bit on the light side, being a co-op based, relaxed 3rd person hack-n-slash. The cool addition, though, is a “Villain” mode where players take a role analogous to that of the Dungeon Master in classic D&D, and places mobs and traps for the player to fight. Project Spark: This is an interesting one: Project Spark lets players create their own mini-games and play with friends. It’s not restricted to one genre, though, and players can try their hand at tabletop games, dungeon crawlers, arcade shooters, and more. Furthermore? It marks the return of Conker, from Conker’s Bad Fur day, and this alone is something to celebrate. The game will be releasing for Xbox One and PC. Halo 5: Guardians & Halo: Master Chief Collection It wouldn’t be a Microsoft conference without a million news on the Halo front, but this time they’ve outdone themselves. We saw a Halo 5 teaser which was expected, but also a deep look at the Master Chief Collection. This is a a single disc including Halo 1-4 with their respective multiplayers mode. Halo 2 Anniversary has the ORIGINAL Halo 2 multiplayer, in particular, the one everyone loved, with the same engine as 10 years ago. Players will be able to switch between modern and classic graphics with the touch of a button. Pretty exciting, really, but furthermore, the collection includes Halo: Nightfall, the live action series coming out that connects Halo 4 & 5, and a Halo 5 Guardians Beta. Inside: This game looked fantastic. It seems like we’re looking at the next Limbo/Portal, a post-apocalyptic mechanical future, and gameplay based on puzzle solving and stealth. Count us in. Showing off indie games published to Xbox 1 They showed a bunch of indies, as if in order to contest Sony’s dominance on that field. Microsoft did great, although the footage was really short, they really did showcase a lot of variety. Rise of the Tomb Raider: We only saw a short teaser without gameplay, but it seems like this game will gap the transition between the Lara we saw in the last Tomb Raider, and the classic Tomb Raider games. We’re glad to see they’re still focusing on her human side. Witcher 3: Wild Hunt We got to see some gameplay of the latest game in the Witcher series, and it frankly looks fantastic. It looks like it will build on the strengths of the previous 2 games, and give players the freedom to hunt, track, and take on quests with incredible graphics and enhanced gameplay. This was our favorite game from the event. The Division: Tom Clancy’s games are back! In the trailer for The Divison we saw a 3D map of the city which we assume encompasses the playable area. Apparently, this tactical shooter has massive, sprawling buildings that can be traversed as well as environments that respond to being shot at. Could this game really deliver, or are we seeing the next Watch_Dogs? Scalebound: The concept of Scalebound seems to be small guy fighting big monsters in a very stylish way. Let’s not forget, this exclusive is a game by Platinum Games, the people behind Bayonetta. Crackdown: (No really, just Crackdown) Crackdown is back! We seem to have seen a pre-rendered sequence, hinting at the possibility of co-op. Despite the lack of actual footage, the return of the franchise alone should delight everyone. |
