Lechal Bluetooth-Enabled Shoes Are One Step Ahead of Other Wearables

Posted: 08 Aug 2014 01:44 PM PDT

Lechal Bluetooth Enabled Footwear

What if in order to quantify ourselves, we used something that feels natural for us, instead of strapping annoying smartwatches or bands to our wrists? Smart footwear does not add any extra weight, but has all the functionality you would expect from a fitness tracker.

A lot of beautifully-designed (not to mention innovative) things are coming these days from China and India, in an attempt to prove that there are plenty of talented designers and inventors beyond Scandinavia. One of the latest examples is the Bluetooth-enabled smart footwear created by Indian startup Ducere Technologies Pvt. Lechal, as these shoes are called, sync with a smartphone app in order to point the wearer in the right direction. On top of that, these smart shoes also act as a fitness tracker.

Lechal co-founder Krispian Lawrence explained that “The shoes are a natural extension of the human body. You will leave your house without your watch or wristband, but you will never leave your house without your shoes.” I couldn’t agree more!

The direction is pointed out with the help of vibrations that are enabled in the right or the left shoe, depending on where the runner should be headed next. How do the shoes know the right path? The smartphone app they sync with is based on Google Maps, so assuming that you have a data plan, Lechal will know which way is home. The developers admit that these smart shoes were initially developed for visually-impaired people, so that they know how to reach a specific destination. In the meantime, however, the company changed its target audience from this category to people who enjoy jogging or even sprinting. I’d say that the design of these smart shoes make them more appropriate for such activities, but that doesn’t mean that the blind couldn’t benefit from their advantages.

This Bluetooth-enabled footwear also doubles as a fitness tracker. In other words, the shoes can calculate the covered distance and the burned calories. Besides that, what better way to count steps than a shoe? Assuming they pack the necessary sensors, Lechal shoes could be the perfect pedometer.

If the developers keep their promise and launch these smart shoes in September at under $100, they will definitely be a hit among people who love sports.

One-Inch Thick 13″ Alienware Laptop Packs More Power than the 14″ Version

Posted: 08 Aug 2014 01:02 PM PDT

13-inch Alienware

Alienware, Dell’s division of gaming hardware, has announced the launch of a new notebook which is more powerful than the 14″ generation, despite being smaller.

At the price point that most Alienware products are sold, it’s clear that this company targets a specific niche audience with its gaming notebooks and desktops: gamers with deep pockets. The premium prices is often justified by components and features we don’t get to see in an everyday laptop.

The new Alienware notebook is only one inch thick, so this isn’t exactly its strongest point. As one of the company’s representatives explained, “There are slimmer notebooks out there, but they’ll rely on some tactics that might actually compromise performance just to reach a more significant level of thinness. We decided we’re going to maintain a system that gives the graphics card and the CPU the greatest amount of power possible without throttling performance.”

A powerful system tends to produce a lot of heat, especially when encased in such a small form factor. The representative pointed out that “You can tax the CPU and the graphics card both completely. There’s two fans, there’s two thermal solutions, and they all run independently from one another.”

The specs of the 13″ Alienware laptop are as follows:

  • GPU: Nvidia 860 GTX GPU
  • CPU: Intel Core i Processors
  • RAM: Up to 16GB DDR3
  • Internal storage: Up to two SSD drives (or one regular hard drive)
  • Wi-Fi: Wireless 802.11ac tech from Killer
  • Sound card: Klipsch
  • OS: Supports Windows 8.1, 8.1 Pro, and 7 Pro
  • Battery life: 7-8 hours if streaming over Wi-Fi and using an SSD drive for storage
  • Thickness: 1-inch
  • Weight: Less than 4.5 lbs

When it comes to the type of display, you have three different options:

  • HD 1366 x 768
    200 nits, TN-panel, 45% color gamut
  • FHD 1920 x 1080
    350 nits, IPS-panel, 72% color gamut
  • QHD w/touch, 2560 x 1440
    400 nits, IPS-panel, 72% color gamut

A 13″ display may seem small, but it is in fact ideal when gaming on the go.

As per usual, this Alienware notebook comes with an illuminated keyboard that turns gaming nights into great experiences. Combined with the other pieces of hardware and an otherworldly design, every single detail of this laptop reveals how unique it really is.

Scheduled for a November launch, the 13″ laptop will be available at different price points, depending on the configuration. However, the company’s representative mentioned that “To give you some idea, our 14-inch sells for $1099.”

Samsung & Barnes & Noble team up for new Nook: why is it a great idea

The Kindle’s eternal competitor, the Nook is back with a vengeance as Samsung teams up with Barnes & Noble for its latest incarnation.

Amazon’s Kindle is, so far, considered the end-all, be-all of eBook readers, but what will happen once the noble competition Barnes & Noble team up with aces of hardware Samsung to produce its latest version? The two companies have scheduled an event for August 20th at New York City where they are expected to introduce their new, improved Nook.

So far called the Galaxy Tab 4 Nook, the device will sport a 7-inch display, and hope to compete with both the Kindle Fire HDX and Google's Nexus 7. The Galaxy Tab 4 Nook will run on Android OS, and enjoy benefits from Samsung's digital marketplaces & offerings. This is great news for users, as ever since introducing the Nook ebook reader back in 2009, B&N was barely able to compete by producing low-priced tablets, good enough to get the job done of letting users buy and read books, watch movies, play games, and so on, but never enjoying the full support of other dedicated devices. The Nook was always trapped between being an eBook reader and something else. With full Android support & Samsung’s hand at hardware, the device will most likely see fantastic improvement on performance, one of its weaker aspects, and non-eBook content availability.

If all goes well, users can expect a not-to-expensive tablet that doubles as eBook reader, and can excel at both. They’re working with the best, after all.
