Tilted Hillside Studio Frames Beautiful Views in Two Directions

Posted: 30 Nov 2014 10:00 AM PST

hillside studio 1
Perched on a gently sloping hillside, this small artist's studio bends in the middle to frame the sky on the backside rather than dead-ending in the earth. Architect Christian Tonko envisions the structure, which is located in Bregenz, Austria, as a 'visual device' that captures a very specific view of the surroundings for the occupants while also letting in direct sunlight from the southeast. Gasping for Clean Air? TZOA Wearable Is For You!

Posted: 29 Nov 2014 12:30 PM PST

TZOA Wearable 01

As clean air is about to become a commodity, TZOA thought of developing an wearable and a companion app that shows you the location of the cleanest nitrogen-oxigen-carbon dioxide mix in your area.

Depending on where you live, clean air may come as a natural thing or something you need to live the life of a woodman to enjoy. Some capitals and even countries are neglecting this aspect, thinking that pollution and dust won’t have such a major impact on the lives of their inhabitants. However, in the countries where the quality of life really matters (I’m thinking Scandinavian countries and Canada, mostly), governments and even the common people are taking measures to reduce pollution and improve the quality of the air they’re breathing. Vancouver-based TZAO comes to rescue us from the ill effects of polluted air by developing a wearable that points out the places with cleaner air.

There are four main aspects measured by the TZOA wearable: air quality, UV light, humidity, and temperature. The self-proclaimed “world’s first enviro-tracker” can be attached to a shirt. Its sensors collect the environmental data and send it to a smartphone where the companion app makes sense out of it. More precisely, the four factors are correlated and the quality of your surroundings is translated into a percentage. The app can even make suggestions of nearby places you should go, instead, if the area you’re in is not that clean. That’s particularly important if you’re into cycling or sports, in general.

TZOA is currently featured on Kickstarter, where the eponymous company is looking to raise CAD $110,000. The campaign hasn’t even reached 20% of its funding goal, and since there were 18 more days to go at time of writing, the chances of this project being successful are pretty slim. Supposing it reaches its goal before the campaign’s end, TZOA will have to deliver in August 2015 their wearable and app to anyone who backed the project with CAD $135 or more.

Our life depends on the quality of the air we breathe and of the water we drink, so moving to an area where the air is cleaner and the water is purer might be one of the best decisions you’ll ever take. There are ways of purifying the air and the water, but it’s definitely better when these come clean by default.

Check out this man who is walking on a rope bridge that looks incredibly unsafe!  Every step you take can really end up being your last when you are walking on a rope bridge that looks as sturdy as a bowl of gelatin! However, if you all look closely, you will notice that this rope bridge might not be as scary as you think! Can you all tell that this is actually a very clever sidewalk chalk drawing?  Seeing is believing, and this is definitely a case for that! Have a good Saturday, and see you all tomorrow!

Mountain Face Optical Illusion

Posted: 26 Nov 2014 12:14 PM PST

Good Morning to you all, and welcome to Thursday, which is also known as Thanksgiving Day! Today is a very special day where friends and family will be getting together to sit down to a nice roasted turkey meal. However, before you all pack up and head to someone else's house for food, we want to share with you a great optical illusion. Sometimes people can spot things when they look at mountains, and that is definitely the case with today's optical illusion. Check out this mountain, and do you all see something hidden among the ragged peaks and rocks? You are absolutely correct! There is a face staring right back at you! Do you all see it? Here is a hint, the nose is in the direct center of the face, and that should help you all see the rest of the face too. Whether this is just an illusion, or a trick of the light, it sure is an amazing optical illusion.

After you all eat your turkey, you may want to go exercise a little bit, and this woman is riding a horse in this stunning optical illusion! Horseback riding is a great way to work off all that turkey, and we hope you all have a really great Thanksgiving holiday with those you love!

Ghana’s Hilariously Awful Hand-Drawn Movie Posters

Posted: 28 Nov 2014 05:42 AM PST

The West African nation of Ghana is home to a subculture of artists who create outlandish versions of popular Hollywood movie posters. The art form was at its peak in the nation during the 1980s and 1990s, commonly referred to as the ‘Golden Age of Movie Posters’. During this time, artists would let their imagination run wild in order to create posters that would never fail to draw audiences to Africa’s dilapidated cinema halls. So they used their artistic license to add weapons, scenes and characters that didn’t even exist in the original movie!

The art form began to lose momentum in the 2000s, when Ghanaians purchased their own TVs and VCRs, causing several movie houses to close down. But over time, the lurid hand-painted posters have only increased in value. In fact, several Western art collectors are willing to pay thousands of dollars for them. Some of the artists who have been out of work for several years are now finding a new lease of life in reproducing posters of more recent movies for art aficionados.

Surgical Precision – Detailed Cityscapes Built with Scalpel Blades and Needles

Posted: 28 Nov 2014 04:53 AM PST

Who knew that steely cold surgical tools could be used to produce exquisite, intricate architectural models? Renowned British artist Damien Hirst did just that – he used a vast number of surgical instruments and metal objects such as scalpels, stitching needles, razor blades, hooks, iron filings and safety-pins to create wonderfully detailed collages called 'Black Scalpel Cityscapes'.

For his recent exhibition at White Cube Gallery in Brazil, he selected 17 cities that are either recent sites of conflict, cities relating to his own life, or centers of political or religious significance – including Rome and the Vatican City, Leeds, Beijing, Moscow, London and New York.

To create a collage, Hirst gathers as many surgical tools and scrap metal as possible and then begins the arduous process of delicately arranging them to replicate the aerial view of a city. He then adds some local flavor to each collage. For instance, the view of Paris is contains a few French francs and tourist souvenirs, while Vatican City has silver religious medallions. Moscow's miniature roads sparkle with shards of mirror.

Welcome to Ifrane, Africa’s Little Switzerland

Posted: 28 Nov 2014 04:14 AM PST

Ifrane is a small town and ski resort in Morocco, famous for its European style and its similarity to the tourist haven of Switzerland. Developed by the French in the 1930s, Ifrane is so reminiscent of the Swiss Alps that it is fondly referred to as 'Africa's Little Switzerland'.

The town is located at an altitude of 5,460 feet above sea level in the Middle Atlas region. Its neat red-roofed houses, blooming flower beds, lake-studded parks, and snowbound winters present a huge contrast to Morocco's narrow, maze like streets and old, earth-colored buildings. It is truly a wonder that such lush greenery, cedar and oak forests, and pasturelands can even exist in the midst of the hot and dry climate of the region.
