Google introduce Project Jacquard for smart clothes Posted: 04 Jun 2015 11:35 AM PDT The Google team’s latest project takes a very literal meaning on the word “wearables” – meet their latest idea, Project Jacquard. Google have a new idea for when it comes to the very fabric of our clothes: besides picking it for its softness, texture or looks, we might also decide on some garments because they let us interact with all of our favorite gadgets. Google have this idea of producing fabric that can be used to turn on or regulate lights, control TVs or stereos, and several other possible interactions all across our houses, everything molded to whatever the users desire. Project Jacquard exists in some sort of interconnected paradise where all kinds of gadgets interconnect with each other. This project was shown a few weeks ago at San Francisco’s very own Moscone Center, in a specially designated area for the Google I/O team. According to the reports and images brought for by the CNet team, Google are working in replacing tactile screens for fabric and thread, and using those to interact with several and diverse gadgets via the fiber networks in these. Apparently, the concept behind this is very similar to the one behind traditional touch screens, with the big difference that fabric is malleable, hence, allowing a bigger range of possible interactions. Furthermore, these threads allow multitouch possibilities, and can be combined with gyroscopes and accelerometers for new features – will we all end with GPS’s incorporated in our clothing? As of now, this is only a demonstration and a proof of concept – but knowing Google, they’re surely preparing something big with these ideas, which might eventually be introduced in the form of consumer products. Could it be that Google’s next big ally are fashion and sport clothes brands? We will have to wait and see what the Mountain View guys end up doing with this Project Jacquard. Be social! Huawei P8 Lite Is All About Your Senses Posted: 03 Jun 2015 12:00 PM PDT It doesn’t matter if you want to listen to music, take photos of your favorite places, or just watch a video on its sharp display. Huawei P8 Lite will handle all these (and more) impressively. By the looks of it, graphics card manufacturers are not the only ones to launch the flagship products first, followed by the lesser models. Smartphone makers have made a habit from that, too, and the latest example comes from Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei. After launching the P8 and the P8 Max, the company has decided to offer P8 Lite, a stripped down version of the former ones. The price of the device is also lower than of the flagships, so there are disturbances in the Force with this one. At the core of the P8 Lite sits a Hisilicon Kirin 620 octa-core CPU running at 1.2GHz. In terms of memory, Huawei equipped this one with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of ROM that can be furthermore expanded by using a microSD card of up to 32GB. Android M may be just around the corner, but that doesn’t mean that Lollipop’s life is over. The P8 Lite is running the latter, with Huawei’s EMUI 3.1 on top. While not record-breakingly thin, P8 Lite’s 7.7mm thick body will be very comfortable to hold in hand, and the 5-inch HD display based on a Sharp panel has a lot to contribute to that, too. In the camera department, the P8 Lite has a 13MP snapper on the back and a 5MP sensor in the front, with all sorts of enhancements for selfies, such as Face Beauty and Smile Capture. Music playback seems to be among the main strong points of the P8 Lite. An enlarged integrated sound chamber was used for a more powerful output. Besides that, Huawei made use of an audio frequency enhancement technology and HDR noise reduction. According to the manufacturer, sounds played on this smartphone are supposed to be very crisp, and a lot more detailed than what the competition is offering at the same price. GearBest is currently taking pre-orders for Huawei P8 Lite until June 10, when it will begin shipping them. Both the black and the white versions cost $239.25, but you can get any of them for only $206.99 if you apply the coupon code P8LITE at checkout. Be social! Nintendo denies everything: the NX won’t run on Android Posted: 03 Jun 2015 11:56 AM PDT Rumors claiming Nintendo’s next console would run on Google’s OS Android seem to be unfounded. In a surprisingly quick PR maneuver, the big N have clarified that Android on Nintendo consoles is just “not going to happen”. Nintendo are currently working on a new console of which we know nothing except its code-name, NX. As there are very few certainties about this new hardware piece (it’s a new console but “it won’t replace the Wii U nor the 3DS”), speculation is rampant, and several users had been talking about the possibility of this system running under a variation of Android OS. These rumors were so strong that Nintendo themselves, who rarely concern themselves with hearsay, came out and clarified: "There is no truth to the report saying that we are planning to adopt Android for NX," a Nintendo spokesman said. It’s just not going to happen. This answer comes as the response to the rumors started by Nikkei, a Japanese newspaper citing inside knowledge and claiming that the big N could be using Android on their next console. The idea was simple: by using Android, Nintendo would have access from the get-go to a huge selection of titles that are already on Google’s platform, and they would only need to add their original productions on top. Also, seeing Android’s progress on areas such as TV and wearables, it doesn’t sound like a terrible idea. Furthermore, if Nintendo were to keep their Wii U style controller with a touch screen, there is no reason for any Android app to be incompatible. The counterpart of all this, though, would be the possibility of hacks and piracy. With this rumor done with, we’re back to where we started: we have no idea what the NX is, but we can’t wait to see it and know more. Nintendo has had a rough couple of years now, with low sales on their home console department. The Wii U has been struggling to recapture a fragment of its predecessor’s success (the Wii). And even though the 3DS is doing fine and selling well, the Japanese company is already researching alternative distribution and monetization channels, such as creating amusement parks, amiibos, or even releasing smartphone games. Some users are even speculating that the NX itself might be a wearable, sort of like the pokewalker that came with Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver. Be social!
