Pizza Portraits Are Deliciously Awesome

The Museum of Modern Art in New York might be pretty awesome, but a problem with it is that attendees are not allowed to eat the pieces in exhibition. Well, we bet they’re not as tasty as pizza anyways.

Some pizza places around the globe allow buyers to make suggestions or request a special something with their meal, but what Wilhelm Rodriguez does is entirely something else. This pizza master is a chef at Papa’s Pizza in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, and specializes in creating highly detailed portraits on pizza. You can view more of Rodriguez’s work here.

In this story, you see in order Freddie Krueger, the Mortal Kombat logo (along with Sub-zero!), Peter Griffin and the late Steve Jobs.

Google Might Become Your New Favorite Carrier

All the wireless carriers have been advertising their simplified plans and easy upgrade models, but it seems like more of the same.  Google may change that.

In September 2012, Google officially launched its Google Fiber service in Kansas City, becoming a force of disruption for the firmly seated ISPs.  Google fiber brings better service at a lower price and demands that the rest of the industry reacts to compete.  Unfortunately the service is only available in a handful of cities, but as it expands it will continue to challenge the likes of Time Warner and Comcast.

Google’s initiatives in fiber and their Nexus program have been making people drool over the idea of a Google wireless network for years and a recent report from The Information (paywall) suggests that we will soon get just that.  Sort of.  According to The Verge, Google has had talks with both Sprint and Verizon and plans to provide their service at wholesale prices backed by fiber Wi-Fi hotspots.

One of the biggest obstacles to Google providing its own wireless service will be the fact that some (such as the US Department of Justice) may say they have too many fingers in too many pies.  In this case, they will have their fingers in all the pies if you are using Google Nexus hardware with Google Android software on Google’s wireless network, but by going the route of an MVNO, Google doesn’t actually own the network and Verizon and Sprint will still get a piece of the pie, even if Google’s finger is in it.

This would also line up with a recent rumor for Google’s plans with their Voice and Hangouts platforms.  Last month, BGR reported that Google may be about to drop Google Voice and roll its features in with Google Hangouts, since there is already some overlap there.  Through both Voice and Hangouts, Google already has the ability to assign a phone number and manage your SMS.

The rumor also states that Google could be planning on expanding calling functionality through VoIP.  Hangouts already offers a calling feature on a desktop, so Google already has many of the resources needed to begin offering wireless service over Wi-Fi.  Agreements with existing carriers will just provide the data needed to extend this functionality beyond the constraints of Wi-Fi.

After all the noise T-Mobile has been making about being the “uncarrier,” Google would be able to show the true definition of what this means.  Their network would likely be data only, using VoIP/VoLTE for voice calls and Hangouts for texting, so they could easily charge flat rate simple plans with no contract.  T-Mobile claims to be contract free, but they have really just shifted the contracts off of the wireless service and onto the devices.  Google’s Nexus program and similar low cost devices would mean consumers could save money on the device, the service, and avoid contracts.

It’s unknown if Google has similar plans for areas outside the United States, but it would be logical that the service would expand internationally if it is successful.  Introducing a 5th major carrier will definitely disrupt the industry, but it will likely do the most damage to 4th place T-Mobile, considering Google would basically be eating its lunch on the backs of Verizon and Sprint’s networks.

Either way, if Google wireless service is anywhere near as disruptive as Google Fiber, then the carriers (especially AT&T), should be looking over their shoulder.

LG G Watch Priced at Under $300 Will Be Launched by July

The South Korean tech company confirmed that it will launch LG G Watch by July in the UK, and that the Android Wear-powered smartwatch will cost less than £180 or roughly $300.

This is not Google’s official smartwatch, but given LG’s recent collaborations with the search giant, one could say that the South Korean manufacturer received the blessing (or the license, if you prefer) for creating such a product. That’s definitely seems to be the case since LG G Watch will be one of the first devices to ever run Google’s newly launched Android Wear, a special version of the mobile OS particularly tailored for wearables. On top of that, when Google launched Android Wear, it claimed that it will work closely with LG, Motorola and Fossil to create smartwatches that will run this version of Android.

By the looks of it, LG representatives talked with Pocket-lint and revealed that the LG G Watch will be launched before July in the UK at a very affordable price, the equivalent of less than $300. Other than that, not much is known about the LG G Watch, except that the straps will be changeable. That’s a huge relief, as it means that people will be able to wear this smartwatch both casually and on more formal occasions.

LG also stated that it will also launch a round version in the future, the one launched by July being rectangular, as you can see in the pictures. In the promotional video for Android Wear showed a round smartwatch running the new version of the OS, but as far as I’m concerned, these wearables look better in a rectangular shape.

One major drawback of the LG G Watch is that it will be basically useless without a smartphone. Google and the manufacturers that will bring Android Wear devices into the world conceived this products as smartphone companions, and not as standalone products. Personally, I would love to see a smartwatch having GPS and various sensors (mostly for fitness), so I can use Endomondo on it even if I forgot my smartphone at home. I don’t care if the GSM features are stripped away (I noticed that some Chinese manufacturers are taking that route), as I only need it for other things than talking.

It remains to be seen how the LG G Watch will look and work when the company launches this product. Since Google will reveal Android Wear at the Google I/O conference in June, it’s quite probable that LG’s smartwatch will also be launched then.

Amazon Dash Means to Innovate Grocery Shopping

Being the largest online retailer on the planet isn’t enough for Amazon, as the company intends to also become the world’s largest grocery store with the help of Amazon Dash.

We might not get a food replicator a la Star Trek, but Amazon still means to bring some innovation at least to the way we buy food, if not to the way we eat it. The magic wand henceforth known as Amazon Dash will provide quick access to the e-tailer’s grocery shopping service that was launched last Friday. AmazonFresh is currently invite-only, but the service will most likely expand to include more customers, as well as more areas of the US, currently being available only in Southern California, in the San Francisco Bay Area and in Seattle (this makes sense, since this is the retailer’s hometown).

Amazon Dash connects to your home’s WiFi network and enables you to create shopping lists simply by scanning the barcode of a product that ran out. If for some odd reason scanning barcodes is too difficult of a task for you, then Dash’s microphone will allow you to add items to the list verbally.

The barcode scanner-shopping list combo has been done before by tens of mobile apps, so this is definitely not the aspect that makes Dash’s take on grocery shopping revolutionary. What makes the magic wand that great is its direct link to AmazonFresh. All the items you’re going to scan with the Dash will show up in the AmazonFresh account. This feature could prove really useful for people who buy the same stuff all over again.

While Amazon claims that the Dash is that easy to use that even a child would know how to handle it, that’s particularly one of the things you need to pay attention to. There are cases when kids bought on eBay or on Amazon very expensive things using their parents’ cards, so if you decide to leave the Dash around the house, don’t be surprised if a truck full of groceries pulls in your driveway.

AmazonFresh will be offered as a subscription-based service, and people will have to pay $300 annually to access it. Whether that subscription will be recovered from cheaper groceries remains to be seen, though. If it makes any difference, Amazon Dash is offered for free to whoever buys a subscription to the e-tailer’s grocery shopping service.
