1 Basic Module Makes 900-Block Modular Home in Ecuador

Posted: 13 May 2013 10:00 AM PDT

Pushing the potential of prefabrication and modular production to its extreme, this lovely home was constructed using a single repeated module that transforms in function depending on its orientation.

In one dwelling, Jose María Sáez has created continuous surfaces, storage slots and living facades that are all made of the same basic concrete block, twisted, turned and slotted onto a metal frame, fit to each different purposes.

While some critics will no doubt note the difficulty of applying such a simple system in colder or otherwise more-complex climates, it is a great fit for its regional conditions and test-case for broader applications.

Ultimately, this specific architectural expression is just one potential result – it could have been different, and could indeed be different if and when its owners expand on the property.
