Apple Fixes WireLurker Trojan, Windows Version Is Out in the Wild

Posted: 07 Nov 2014 08:27 AM PST

WireLurker

Remember Apple, the company that used to say that its products are too good to get infected with viruses and trojans? Well, iOS and OS X devices have just had their first serious malware infestation ever.

Originating in a third-party Chinese OS X app store called Maiyadi, the WireLurker trojan is according to Unit 42 “new era in malware across Apple’s desktop and mobile platforms.” It is easily transfered from MacOS computers to iOS devices through an USB cable, and it is estimated that 800 million iPhone users could be affected.

The WireLurker trojan shows its Windows roots, as an earlier variant has been using malware made for Microsoft’s OS to attack Apple devices. It’s particularly dangerous as it represents the first malware to install apps on non-jailbroken iPhones using enterprise provisioning.

“We are aware of malicious software available from a download site aimed at users in China, and we’ve blocked the identified apps to prevent them from launching. As always, we recommend that users download and install software from trusted sources,” explained an Apple spokesperson in a statement to Business Insider.

“Previously we knew the WireLurker was distributed through the Maiyadi App Store. However, the newly revealed samples were directly uploaded to Baidu YunPa by user ‘ekangwen206′,” added Palo Alto researchers Claud Xiao and Royce Lu.

“The main functionality of this malware is to copy sfbase.dylib and sfbase.plist in its Resources directory to specific locations to make them perform as a MobileSubstrate tweak, shown in Figure 7. Additionally, the malware will communicate with the C2 server ‘www.comeinbaby.com’, the same server used by the version of WireLurker we revealed yesterday,” explained Xiao and Lu.

iOS forensics expert Jonathan Zdziarski pointed out that “Apple can revoke the enterprise certificate to prevent installation on iOS 8 devices; however WireLurker can still read information from the device without it. This is because the information is queried by the Mac desktop when your iPhone is plugged into it, by abusing that trusted relationship. Also, if you have a jailbroken iPhone running afc2 (a terribly insecure service allowing root file system access to the device), then a mobile substrate library is copied onto the device to infect the system. This is done regardless of whether or not WireLurker still has a valid enterprise profile.”

Microsoft Bone Conduction Headset Guides the Blind Through the Urban Chaos

Posted: 07 Nov 2014 07:54 AM PST

Microsoft Bone Conduction Headset

The Redmond tech giant is not concerned only about selling its operating systems, consoles and peripherals, but also about making life better for all of us, and especially for the ones who require technology to live a normal life.

There are 246 million visually-impaired people in the world, and if you feel like there are too many gadgets for them, I tell you that there aren’t enough of them. Exoskeletons can help paralyzed people move, so why not develop gadgets that can help the visually-impaired, and even the blind walk normally on a heavily-traveled street? For the blind, simply walking on an alley can give them thrills, but they might be able to get rid of that by using Microsoft’s bone conduction headset.

“Cities need to be built for absolutely everyone, but no one's going to knock them down and make them accessible,” says Chris Yates, customer experience lead for Guide Dogs, the charity that’s helping Microsoft perform the trials between Reading and London. “What we’re doing is using existing infrastructure and working around it with technology.”

The prototype makes use of Microsoft’s 3D soundscape technology, plus a Windows Phone for GPS data. The headset correlates the data received from the smartphone with the one generated by the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth beacons placed in trial locations, and provides audio guidance through bone conduction. With ears left uncovered, the blind can still pay attention to what’s happening around them. More importantly, the device can even be used by people who have trouble hearing, as the sound is transmitted directly to the inner ear.

“We’ve only done a concept, it’s still pure research and development, but the possibilities are endless and the impact is incredible if we get this right,” added Jenny Cook, head of strategy and research for Guide Dogs.

The Independence Day video, which is in no way related to the Will Smith flick, nor to the American National Day, explains using a simple and cute animation how the bone conduction headset developed by Microsoft can help visually-impaired people to navigate through the city.

Microsoft’s bone conduction headset stands to show that wearable tech can have a major impact on the lives of people suffering from various conditions. I’m sure that the company will look to expand its line of wearables beyond fitness bands.

Dissected Ralph Wiggum Cake: anatomy of Ralph

Ralph Wiggum cake 1

In time, Ralph Wiggum has become one of the most recognizable Simpsons characters, deserving of a cake as much as the yellow family. Well, lo and behold!

What you see in here is Ralph Wiggum cake inspired in an old t-shirt design at Threadless, a website that specializes in geeky clothing. Turns out cake master Kylie Mangles of Freshly Squeez'd liked the design so much and wanted so hard to be challenged that she decided to recreate it as an awesome 3D cake. Turns out, it’s been quite a hit and her design is now making the rounds around several websites, and who can blame her? The cake looks just stunning.

Kim Kardashian Wants to Save BlackBerry

Posted: 07 Nov 2014 05:00 AM PST

<> on the streets of Manhattan on March 25, 2011 in New York City.

Speaking at a conference, reality TV star Kim Kardashian says that she would like to save BlackBerry despite its money troubles.

A well known name in the media, there are few people who haven’t heard of Kim Kardashian-West (her name following her marriage to Kanye West earlier this year). From her massively popular reality television series that has catapulted her and her family members to fame, to her own business endeavours including the much loved and much downloaded mobile game (Kim Kardashian Hollywood), she’s a savvy business woman as much as she is a well known celebrity.

On the other hand, there’s BlackBerry. A now ailing company, crushed by the smartphone competition of Apple, Samsung and even Windows Phone, BlackBerry was once incredibly popular but is in need of some serious well wishes and good luck charms in order to stop itself from going under.

So what do these unlikely headline-mates have in common? Quite a bit actually as not only is Kim Kardashian a huge BlackBerry fan, she also wants to save the company from extinction.

She explained this in a recent talk at the recent Re/code mobile conference. Speaking to Kara Swisher she said that,

“BlackBerry is my heart and soul,” she said. “I love it. I will never get rid of it. Sometimes I’ll send up a Twitpic on my BlackBerry. I use an older one, though. They don’t have them in stores anymore. I buy them on eBay. I have three lined up in my room so if they break. If one breaks and I’m down to two, I search on eBay until I have my third. I have anxiety I’ll run out.”

BlackBerry was once on top of the mobile game – people used its phones for business as much as communication and it’s only poor transitioning to the era of apps and touchscreens that’s seen the company hit the skids. It’s the previous business/comms appeal that’s likely what appeals to Kardashian the most and what makes her want to stop the company from going “extinct”.

Could she just buy out BlackBerry to stop that from happening? Well, no, not really. BlackBerry is worth around $5 billion, while Kim’s estimated net worth is $65 million and even with the $200 million she’ll make from her aforementioned mobile app this year she’d still be a few billions short.

Even if she doesn’t buy out the company though, her high profile endorsement of it will certainly come in handy. It’ll be better use to BlackBerry than their ill-fated Alicia Keys partnership at least.

3D Printed Lightsabers: just like the real thing

Posted: 07 Nov 2014 04:00 AM PST

3D-Printed-Lightsaber

It’s been a while since we talked Lightsabers and Star Wars, and since today we learned that Episode VII is called The Force Awakens, so did our passion.

The laser part of the Lightsabers can’t be recreated just yet, but the rest of it is fair game already thanks to 3D printing, and Jacky (aka Valcrow), who has created a bunch of CAD drawings that anyone can check out if they wish to build (err, print) their own. It comes in two versions, a simpler one made out of just 4 pieces, and a more complex one, with 14 pieces to assemble. Still, we’re not complaining, Luke Skywalker had it rougher than we did anyways. Now we’d like to see alternative versions such as Darth Maul’s dual lightsaber, because why not? Clearly Valcrow is talented enough.
