The Miracle Machine Turns Water Into Wine

Posted: 07 Mar 2014 11:45 AM PST

The Miracle Machine

A couple of Californian entrepreneurs made the unthinkable: they created a gadget wittily called The Miracle Machine that turns drinking water into wine… or so they say.

Water is definitely characterized by a wider availability and a smaller price compared to wine, so any machine capable of turning the former into the latter would mean a great deal for wine lovers, biblical references aside.

The Miracle Machine is the result of a collaboration between Philip James, a British businessman who has 10 year experience in the wine industry, and American Kevin Boyer, a former restaurant wine buyer and sommelier. These positions recommend the two as a couple who could actually bring some innovation in this industry. If the bag-in-box concept proved to be not only more practical and a lot cheaper than wine bottles, but also friendlier to the environment, maybe it’s time to look for a new solution to making wine, as well.

There is a catch about this device, as it also requires a sachet of ingredients besides water, but ultimately, it’s the opportunity of making fine wine production more accessible and more affordable that matters the most. The gadget includes a fermentation chamber where “electrical sensors, transducers, heaters and pumps” combine the contents of the sachet with the water. In three days time, the resulting liquid is supposedly hard to distinguish from vintage, rare wine.

Kevin Boyer explained how the two came up with the idea of making The Miracle Machine: “We thought by using the technology and the vast amount of resources available to wine makers now, it should be possible to simulate the exact flavors of specific wines. The quality’s so good, even I can’t tell the difference.”

Victoria Moore from The Telegraph expressed her optimism regarding the efficiency of this machine: “I make a point of never knocking anything until I’ve tried it, but, having tried wines made from concentrate, I would be very surprised if I couldn’t tell the difference between this and a £12 bottle based on taste.”

Manufacturing The Miracle Machine is possible only through crowdfunding, since investors in the wine industry wouldn’t want to ruin everything by supporting the development of such a device. In the funding stages, the gadget will cost £299 ($500), while a sachet of ingredients will be available for £1.20 ($2), an insignificant price, considering that the resulting wine is comparable to varieties costing ten times more.

Google Glass Banned From Bar For Fear Of Secret Recordings

Posted: 07 Mar 2014 06:00 AM PST

Google glass

Google Glass is one of the most exciting things to happen in the gadget world ever, and everyone seems to love it. Or that’s what it seemed up until now.

The CBS from San Francisco has reported that a local bar in the South of Market neighborhood has banned patrons from wearing Google Glass. The reason behind this ban? Well, they don’t want any secret recordings happening in their fine establishment. People in the area will spot a sign with a picture of the gadget and a red circle and a slash over it meaning forbidden. As they explain, customers "have expressed concerns with being recorded while enjoying themselves."

These events follow a case where a social media consultant was reportedly attacked at Molotov’s for wearing Glass. Apparently, Molotov’s has also put up a sign banning the use of any recording devices at all (does this mean patrons can not use smartphones at all?). When the line between what is private and what’s not starts to become faint thanks to the technology, that’s a definitive sign that the times are changing.

You Can Buy an Actual, Real-Size Batmobile & Drive It

Posted: 07 Mar 2014 05:00 AM PST

Batmobile replica

I never really liked the Drew Carey show, but I kinda liked the episode in which he gets to drive around in the Batmobile until it’s taken from him because he didn’t follow the rules (fooled around in the car with his girlfriend).

But it’s not just TV show material now. You can purchase the Batmobile from the Dark Knight & Batman Begins through the James Edition luxury marketplace website. The best part? It’s completely legal, which means it’s just an ordinary street car in the eyes of the law, only it’s 1000 times more awesome than anything that gets on the road.

There are cheaper options, like these epic homemade versions for you to check out.

So if you have £598,000 of spare change (I’m not sure if they’re willing to haggle), it’s time to step on it because there are only five of them in existence.

MHL Changes the Media Streaming Game

In an age of cord cutting, some cords are getting even more relevant.  MHL has already been helping us stream video from our gadgets, but now it does even more.

The Sony Experia Z2 phone and tablet (sharing the same name) are the first devices to launch with MHL 3.0 support.  MHL stands for Mobile High-Definition Link and is typically uses micro USB and HDMI connectors, although it is not limited to one connector, those are just the most common connectors used.

MHL 3.0 provides several upgrades over its previous iterations and with micro USB and appropriately enabled gadgets there are many advantages to be gained.  MHL 3.0 has 4k support for multiple simultaneous display and 7.1 HD enhanced surround sound with Dolby TruHD all while charging up to 10W from any supported connections.

Although MHL 3.0 is 75X faster than MHL 2.0 at 75Mbps, it still doesn't hold a candle to the 4.8 Gbps (1Gbps=1024Mbps) transfer rates seen on USB 3.0 or 10Gbps seen on Apple’s Thunderbolt, but it can be boosted to a (still much lower) 600Mbps with a 10 pin converter.

MHL 3.0 can be a big benefit for cell phone accessories when it comes to additional peripherals or docs since it has mostly media benefits.  It would be especially useful in streaming services such as the Chromecast or Roku.

Additional support for peripheral controls such as keyboards and touch screens provide another huge benefit, along with better Remote Control Protocol, which allows control through a remote control your phone or other device when plugged into a TV.

Although the most convenient technology would not require any sort of tethering,  wireless technologies that can accomplish anything similar to MHL 3.0 at this point are either nonexistent or way too expensive.

For now, MHL provides us with the ability to make better connections between more of our gadgets, but also shows us how much we could do as this technology continues to improve.  Coupled with the improvement of streaming dongles, the idea of needing an entire entertainment center to surround your ideal TV setup is fast fading.

Oscar Mayer Wake Up & Smell The Bacon Alarm Clock

Posted: 06 Mar 2014 12:45 PM PST

Oscar Mayer - Wake Up and Smell the Bacon

The incredible alarm clock made by Oscar Mayer delivers the smell and sound of bacon that is being fried. Thought that the bacon frenzy was over? Far from it, says this American meat and cold cut production company!

Bacon definitely has a lot of fans (no, I’m not talking about Kevin Bacon), and has gained even more after becoming a subculture on the Internet. Need proofs for my previous statement? Well, we have the following products, which all smell like this delicious food:

  • Bacon toothpaste
  • Bacon lollipops
  • Bacon frosting
  • Bacon lip balm

Mind you, the list doesn’t end here, so some might assume that Oscar Mayer’s bacon-scented alarm clock might be yet another product in a sea full of similarly flavored items. Given the revolutionary concept, the smell and sound releasing alarm clock might actually be able to step out of the crowd.

Tom Bick, senior director of integrated marketing and advertising at Oscar Mayer, explained how this unique item came to be: “With nearly two million mentions of #bacon on Instagram, it seems people never get tired of bacon. That’s why our team decided to develop a device to give folks what they long for most. As the category leader, Oscar Mayer is thrilled to bring the first-ever bacon-scented mobile device to market, giving bacon aficionados a new reason to welcome their morning alarm clocks.”

The commercial for the Wake Up & Smell The Bacon alarm clock (which you can watch below) is also amazing! A lot of money and thought must have went into this, as our heroine witnesses a rain of bacon strips at first, only to find herself in a garden full of bacon roses at a later point. Eventually, she wakes up, but not before seeing the animal from which the bacon strips came from. Phil Roudenbusch narrates the following mesmerizing text: “At darkest midnight, the nostrils’ north star awaits you. When imagination blossoms, only this scent will guide you to the greatest awakening. Wake up … to the morning of your dreams.”

When every other alarm clock fails to wake you up, it’s time to give Wake Up & Smell The Bacon a try. Oscar Mayer Institute for the Advancement of Bacon announced that the bacon alarm clock will be available on the product’s site between March 3 and April 4, but that doesn’t mean that it can be bought from there. If you like the idea and would like to own one, feel free to fill in the form, and if you’re lucky enough, the company will pick you and send you one.

The companion iOS app, which features a skillet clock, is available on the iTunes App Store now, but without the bacon sound and smell emitting iPhone accessory, the experience is not the same.

Pizza Hut Goes Hi-Tech, Uses Digital Table to Take Orders

Posted: 06 Mar 2014 12:00 PM PST

Pizza Hut Digital Ordering Table

A digital ordering table could open the way for an entire world of variations, since it would enable people to pick their preferred ingredients on their own.

It’s uncertain whether the digital ordering table will actually save people some time or not, as skimming through a menu and choosing the ingredients by yourself on a touch surface might be equally time-consuming. Yet, the concept that Pizza Hut and Chaotic Moon Studios came up with is very innovative in that it allows people to order pizzas with their fingers. If you consider that customers are able to place an order right after sitting at a table, instead of relying on a busy waiter to take it, the digital table could still be a solution for saving time.

Let’s face it, pizza restaurants are not that different from one another in terms of customer service. In order to distinguish itself from all the others in this industry, a restaurant needs to come with something revolutionary, and that’s exactly what Pizza Hut did with this interactive concept table.

As soon as you take a seat and place a smartphone on it, the table will greet you using your first name. You get to select the size of the pizza, while also seeing how many people could be fed by a particularly sized pizza. Next, you pick the sauce and choose whether it till be distributed on half or the entire pizza. After placing some mozzarella on the sauce (you also have the option of adding some extra cheese), you need to choose the ingredients. I assume that the more ingredients you add, the more expensive the pizza will be, but also tastier, so it must be worth it.

If you’re ordering one for two people, you have the option of limiting the spread of ingredients to only half of the pizza. Guess that depends on how many people are sitting at the table, as each could create his slice as he wishes.

One of the best things about Pizza Hut’s digital ordering table is the prevention of allergies. When reading a menu, some might overlook an ingredient that is potentially dangerous for them, but when they need to pick the ingredients by themselves, they pay a lot more attention to what they will eat.

Not at last, the table displays payment options that include:

  • Debit card
  • Credit Card
  • Cash

NFC and smartphone payment options might be integrated at a later point. To make the wait sweeter till the pizza is delivered, the interactive table allows people sitting around it to play video games, a much loved way of killing time.

Whether we’re ever going to see such a table in Pizza Hut restaurants is still a mystery, but for the moment, it’s rather unlikely, since it would imply a huge investment. We are still allowed to dream, aren’t we?
