Eco-Friendly Home Uses Only Straw for Heating and Cooling

Students at Japan’s Waseda University are revolutionizing home heating by designing a home heated by actively decaying compost. The home, located on the island of Hokkaido in the town of Taiki-cho, is known as “A Recipe to Live.”

The compost element of the home is not nearly as disgusting as it sounds. Hay is enclosed in transparent window shelves and works as a heating system in the cooler months and a cooling system in the summer. In the winter, the hay decomposes, releasing heat. In the summer, cool air is released in the home as the hay dries out.

The hay ferments and composts using the bokashi method which produces very little odor. The straw only needs to be changed a few times a year – a minor inconvenience in exchange for a home that produces its own heating and cooling.

Aesthetically, the home is an exceptionally beautiful piece of architecture. It is simple with clean lines, natural wood, and soft lighting. The home’s interior echoes the home’s gorgeous setting, and the hay panels add to the home’s organic feel. A zero-energy home that is also minimalist and beautiful: it really is a recipe to live by.

Stretchy Modern Fruit Bowl Holds Whatever You Need it To

The classic hanging fruit bowl is getting a stylish modern update with the Pluk, a spherical fruit bowl that hangs from the ceiling and holds your produce – or anything else – in a surprisingly attractive way.

The Pluk is made of two intersecting circles – available in plastic or in wood – and a neat web of elastic strings that move and stretch to let you insert and remove objects from the hanging container.

Designers Kaare Frandsen and Nicolas Aagaard set out to create a more attractive fruit bowl, but they came up with something that is far more versatile than just a container for fruit. It does, of course, hold your fruit and keep it fresher than it would be sitting in a bowl on the counter.

But it can also hold just about anything else that can fit inside its frame. Toys, tools, toiletries…just about anything would look amazing in this hanging work of art. With an optional silicone inlay, it can also be used on a table or counter top.

The designers are already producing the Pluk with their design company FACO, but they started a Kickstarter campaign to begin producing a Pluk in a wider variety of finishes and materials.

hardwood floors purify air

The trappings of modern home life tend to come with some rather distasteful side effects, like the carcinogens that can be released from certain synthetic materials for the entire life of the products. Lauzon Distinctive Hardwood Flooring has come up with a seriously genius way to make our homes safer: floors that act as air purifiers.

Many of us already have purifiers in our homes, but they can be noisy, intrusive, and downright ugly. The Pure Genius line of purifying hardwood floors is activated by light and actively filters out harmful elements to turn them into harmless molecules. According to the manufacturers, the smart flooring can make indoor air up to 85% cleaner.

The intelligent flooring works using a patented system involving titanium dioxide. The flooring takes in molecules of mold, airborne viruses and bacteria, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), then releases them as harmless, breathable air. After just 30 days with Pure Genius flooring, a home’s formaldehyde levels can be reduced to six times lower than the typical home.

Besides being elegant and timelessly lovely, these hardwood floors can even make your home smell better by absorbing ambient odors just like they absorb harmful molecules in the air. The Pure Genius line of hardwood flooring is available in the US through Lauzon Distinctive Hardwood Flooring.
