Organic Shaped Backyard Office Doubles as a Storage Shed Posted: 18 Mar 2014 08:00 AM PDT This sculptural building is known as the Shoffice – a combination of the words shed and office. When a client requested a backyard workspace and storage area, architects Platform 5 created this lovely graceful building. Looking a bit like a giant sculpture, the Shoffice takes on an organic shape. It flows from the ground, up and over the backyard, and around again to the ground. The Shoffice’s elliptical wooden shell looks a bit like a curled wood shaving peacefully resting on the ground. The glazed glass office space is protected within its curved embrace. The office part of the structure is composed of glass walls that make it visible from the main home and from the rest of the yard. Two skylights – one in the office and another in the storage area – provide natural light to work by. Inside, a cantilevered desk and a small storage area are all that adorn the Shoffice. It’s a simple, clutter-free workspace perfect for anyone who works from home – or just needs a little escape. |
Rolling Mop Ball Cleans Floors and Terrifies the Family Pet Posted: 17 Mar 2014 06:00 PM PDT With the advent of the Roomba, people who hate to vacuum rejoiced at never having to clean their floors again. Leave it to Japanese gadget inventors to come up with something that’s even cuter than the Roomba but way less practical. The Mocoro Rolling Ball Mop is exactly what it sounds like: a little rolling ball that cleans your hard surface floors as it rolls. The microfiber ball has a motor inside it that allows it to roll around picking up dust bunnies for 15 minutes at a time. Three AA batteries will provide about three total hours of cleaning. It cleans tile, laminate, hardwood and any other non-carpet floors by causing the dust to stick to the soft cover. Unfortunately, you have to remove the cover and wash it after every cleaning. The video for the Mocoro is insanely cute, but it proves what you’re probably already thinking: this is basically just a pet toy that gets dirty really quickly. If you live in Japan you can get your very own for ¥3,980 (around $40 US). Just watch your pets around it – it will either drive them insane or die at their paws. |
Ethereal Hole-Punched Basin Has Notes of Nature, Whimsy Posted: 17 Mar 2014 02:00 PM PDT This organic-shaped sink might give you pause if you were to approach it to wash your hands. It appears to be perforated by holes that would make a huge mess when you run water into it. The design is equal parts whimsical and nature-based, resembling a natural formation with holes worn away by time and elements. The Penta basin was designed by Mac Stopa for DuPont Corian. The “holes” are actually pieces of a clear material called Chroma, giving the basin the appearance of a white sink with circular pieces punched out of it. It won the Interior Design best of the year honoree award in 2013. The drain extends from the bottom of the basin, holding it in place above the counter or surface on which it’s installed and giving the basin the appearance of floating. The illusion is enhanced by the airy look of the milky Corian and the transparent Chroma, both of which give a kind of ethereal quality. |
