5 Fancy Dress Ideas Inspired by LEGO Brand Toys Posted: 14 Mar 2014 07:00 AM PDT When a popular toy has stuck around for as long as the LEGO brand has, it's only natural that it inspires things like clothing. Go to any unique t-shirt place like TeeFury and there will be a number of designs that borrow the iconic toy look. That's fine for every day use, but what about when you need to dress up? For guys it's simple, they can pretty much slap on a bow tie onto anything and feel good. Here's a tutorial from LEGOLAND Discovery Center Chicago on how to make a spinning one out of LEGO pieces. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIRKvdcJc-w) However ladies and girls have to work a bit harder before they'll make an appearance where they're expected to look their best. They even have to work harder if they want that LEGO style thrown in the mix. For that reason, here are some fancy dresses made for such an occasion. Wedding Dress What better day than your wedding to wear something one of a kind. This dress was designed by the Japanese artist Rie Hosokai for the exhibit Piece of Peace. As gorgeous as it looks, it is completely stiff. Perhaps some wheels can be added to the base, but it may take a bit to build you into the piece. Roksanda Ilincic Most of the time, a nice dress is as good as the name on the label. Here is a designer who used her daughter's toys as a bold way to create a dress. Roksanda Ilincic uses the bright color pallets of the standard bricks in her 2012 Fall line. You can imagine the bricks leant themselves to geometric shapes. Fergie's LEGO Dress Sometimes to make a certain fashion popular, you need a celebrity attached to it. So at the 2011 Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards, Fergie wore a LEGO dress. Its primary design came from chunky black LEGO bricks. Of course she followed this up with matching accessories. If you're concerned that other designers haven't thought this was a good subject for inspiration or that there is a lack of history, then meet JC de Castelbajac. This designer in 2008-2009 created an entire spring line of LEGO inspired clothing. This included everything from dresses to hats. They even made a brick built animation of the fashion show. LEGO London Dress Now the only question remains, "Is this fashion modern?" In 2013, a dress was designed by Anne-Sophie Cochevelou co-designed with Yueer Zhang for the London fashion week. It took over 5,000 pieces and 350 hours to blend the fabric and bricks together in this memorable piece. The end result is something you can wear and move in.

Google Docs Puts More Power in Your Hands With Add-ons Posted: 14 Mar 2014 05:00 AM PDT Google Docs puts powerful tools at our fingertips, but not all these tools are always the easiest to use. Google is making changes to change that. Just over a week ago, Marques Brownlee leaked on his Google Plus page that Google Docs has in browser dictation support coming. Google Docs has come a long way from the simple in-browser text and spreadsheet editor it started as, but is still lacking in many of the rich features most people depend on in desktop office suites, such as Microsoft Office or Open Office. While the voice dictation service still has yet to get an official release from Google, there was still a massive update to Google Docs dropped this week in the form of add-ons for Google Docs. Patterned after the wildly successful Chrome add-ons, the update for Google Docs brings templates and features for both word processing and spreadsheets.
Developers will be open to submitting new add-ons for anything that can be accomplished using the word processing or spreadsheet tools natively available in Docs. This means that add-ons such as the Avery add-on can enable anyone to generate labels for use in creating nametags, address labels, or any other Avery standard. This tool can even be linked to spreadsheets to pull in the data you need to populate the labels just like creating a pivot table. For spreadsheets, this means templates that enable any sort of calculations or organization you may need. Be it a monthly budget, fantasy football stat tracking, or creating a class schedule, any add-ons enabling templates to accomplish these tasks will be available in the add-on store.
The fact that Docs and Spreadsheets are all stored in Google’s cloud services means that the add-ons have the liberty to incorporate data from each, making Google Docs even more powerful, yet incredibly easy for anyone to leverage with a mostly point and click setup. Add-ons for Google Docs may also have mobile implications. Although it isn’t explicitly available via mobile at this time, but creating a template in a spreadsheet or doc from your desktop may enable it to be accessed and manipulated from a mobile device, making budgets or any other spreadsheets in use that much more valuable. We have yet to see how significant of a response we’ll see from developers, but even a limited selection will be beneficial. Docs and Sheets contain some powerful tools, and Google just put those tools into everyone’s hands. Good job, Google. Source: Engadget Be social! Neil Young Targets Audiophiles with Crowdfunded Portable Music Player Posted: 13 Mar 2014 01:30 PM PDT Despite being relatively pricey for a portable music player, Neil Young’s PonoMusic reached the $800,000 target within a day since the campaign started, fact that emphasizes the capabilities of this device. Having raised more than three times the initial goal, the PonoPlayer developed by Neil Young and his company, PonoMusic, seems to have a lot of fans among the users of the crowdfunding platform. Considering the benefits brought by this high-fidelity portable music player, the success of the Kickstarter campaign started by Neil Young shouldn’t surprise anyone. While exhibiting the product at the SXSW music convention, Young explained that “This is rescuing music. It’s an artist-driven movement to take it back.” The singer declared war on MP3 files a while ago, as he considers that these degrade the music listening experience, which really should be something sacred. The Canadian singer-songwriter pointed out that youngsters who rely on MP3s are deprived from the three-dimensional, immersive sound that they should experience: “They can identify the name of the song and they can learn the melody from listening to it, but inside their souls they’re just not getting what we got because there’s just nothing there for them. The human body is so sensitive….when it sees great art, it feels good. (So) with our music, we were deprived and we started getting very little, a minuscule 1/20th of what we listened to.” The PonoPlayer and the companion music store PonoMusic are meant to offer an alternative to the iPods and iTunes Stores, with a focus on high-resolution music similar to the one produced in studios. PonoMusic and the PonoPlayer will be capable of playing back music with a 9,216 kbps bitrate, while iTunes delivers songs with 256 kbps. As Young put it, “So now you’ll hear the nuances, the soft touches, and the ends on the echo – the texture and the emotion of the music the artist worked so hard to create.” Sir Elton John emphasized the difference by saying that “I haven’t heard a sound like that since vinyl. It was wonderful.”
PonoPlayer’s Kickstarter campaign still has 32 more days to go, so if you want to secure one for yourself, back the project with $300. For $100 more, you can get a player signed by one of the following artists: Patti Smith, Tom Petty, Beck, Arcade Fire, Dave Matthews Band, The Foo Fighters and others. The cost of the albums, on the other hand, will range between $14.99 and $24.99. Be social! Follow Walyou on Facebook and Twitter, and read more related stories about the |
Facebook’s Auto Play Premium Video Ads Disrupt Your News Feed Posted: 13 Mar 2014 12:30 PM PDT The social network announced today that it will introduce video ads in the mobile news feed, to the joy of its 1.23 billion users. The only good aspect about Facebook rolling out video ads in the mobile (and soon in the desktop) version of its app is that the clips are played back without sound. The company has planned doing this since last September, but now they made an official announcement. Apparently, some of the social network’s members participated in a test for the past three months, and things must have been peachy since Facebook decided to gradually introduce the feature to the other users, as well. The Premium Video Ads, as Facebook calls these auto play clips, will only be played during certain intervals. Luckily for us, the social network thought that these should resemble TV ads, and their duration of only 15 seconds emphasizes that. The sad news for advertisers is that this new ad service is not exactly meant for everyone. To qualify, companies must have very deep pockets, as Facebook charges between $1 million and $2.5 million per day. Another good thing about the Premium Video Ads is that they’re not obnoxious. Users can easily scroll past them if they’re not interested, despite the fact that the videos start playing automatically. From this point of view, Facebook’s approach is less in your face than say YouTube’s, which forces you to watch 5 seconds of each ad before skipping. On the contrary, if the Facebook users are interested in the product or service that is being advertised, all they need to do to watch the ad in all of its glory is tap on the video to expand it. People should expect to see the Premium Video ads in their Web and mobile News Feed in the next few months. The social network prefers to use a small number of advertisers and an equally small number of users in order to see how things are before going big with this advertising service. Ace Metrix, the company that helps Facebook identify the premium spots, plays a big role in testing the new feature. If everything goes as planned, we should all experience the terrible Premium Video ads in the not-so-distant future, as if the enlarged ads column in the redesigned Web News Feed wasn’t enough.
