Suspended Staircase Makes Steepness Chic & Comfortable Posted: 23 Mar 2014 08:00 AM PDT Steep enough to fit into small spaces, this unusual suspended staircase design features a system of open-frame stairs that hover above built-in storage and a workspace. The multifunctional piece uses the samba stairs principle of alternating steps to make the ascension from one level to the next easy and comfortable despite the steep angle. No under-the-stairs space is wasted, with virtually every element of the stairs serving more than one practical purpose, yet the design still feels light and sculptural. The spaces within the open steps in the floating portion of the staircase can hold books and decorative objects. Object élevé by Dutch design studio Mieke Meijer is inspired by the stark industrial architectural design featured in the black and white photography of Bernd and Hilla Becher. The designers translated those buildings into handmade furniture in black steel and oak for a designer’s 1930s residence in a suburb of The Hague. |
Scent-Infused Fork Fools Your Senses With Phantom Flavors Posted: 22 Mar 2014 02:00 PM PDT Much of our sense of taste actually comes from our sense of smell, so if you eat something pleasant in an environment that doesn’t smell so great, that tasty morsel might actually taste kind of revolting. Canadian company Molecule-R has created a new kind of utensil that can add to the experience of whatever you happen to be eating at the moment. The Aromafork features a small piece of diffusing paper just behind the tines. The user chooses from a variety of 21 aromas that come with the fork, including coffee, vanilla, wasabi, strawberry, chocolate, and butter. A couple of drops of the aroma oil on the diffusing paper paired with a mouthful of food will trick your senses into thinking that you are eating something different – or just something enhanced with your chosen aroma. Molecule-R claims that the fork can double the amount of flavors your brain can analyze, making it a useful tool for people with food allergies or those trying to stay away from fattening foods. The Aromafork is available for pre-order for $58.95, which includes four forks, 21 aromas, and four droppers. |
