| Munich Hotel Contorts into 88 Different Surprising Shapes Posted: 01 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST
When buildings are constructed, the goal is typically to build them once and only once. Photographer Victor Enrich decided that once just wasn’t enough for a Munich hotel – he digitally reconfigured it in 88 different ways.
The original building is a tall, nondescript hotel with a few long lower floors and a sky-scraping tower on one end. Enrich used these elements and digital tools to imagine what the same building might look like were it built in fantastical worlds where physics have no bearing. Enrich calls the project NHDK. Most of his rearrangements are fantastical and completely impractical, but there is an odd beauty in the way the same elements are tweaked and twisted to create entirely new shapes and forms. Putting a hanging lamp somewhere in your house always presents a dilemma: how to hide the power cord. Designer Michael Anastassiades brings the power cord out into the open in his series String Lights for Italian lighting brand Flos.
Rather than trying to blend the cords in with the walls to make them fade into the background, Anastassiades turns them into part of the design. They create volumes and shapes in the air, drawing unique geometric visions against the walls and ceilings.
Seen from a certain angle, the cord and LED light arrangements look like simple pencil drawings on a white background. It is this simplicity which makes the cord arrangements so compelling: the cords are always there, but it look a different point of view to make them stand out.
