Cinnamon Roll House Wraps Steel Plane in a Wood Frame Posted: 28 May 2012 10:00 AM PDT [ Filed under Offbeat & in the Architecture category ] This is one of those beautifully simple concepts that actually translates into a working building section, all via one critical move: the folding of a conceptually-flat steel element wrapping around and into the home. In the front, the steel membrane lifts off from the ground to create a porch and transparent entry zone, before traveling up and over to enclose the top and back, then bending back in to form a privacy barrier for the innermost areas. Designed by Katsutoshi Sasaki (images by Shinji Miyamoto), a series of perforations in this bent plane are strategic in nature, allowing light and people to pass through as needed. The result is a cozy core zone in the back, with a sense of enclosure reinforced by the knowledge of the concept at work – impossible to miss from the outside, communicated in the clear contrast of metal and wood.
