Dr. Rev’s Creepy Artworks Are Painted in Blood

Posted: 08 May 2012 03:03 AM PDT

Dr Rev Mayers is an Australian tattoo artist with a passion for creating crimson artworks using nothing but blood. Using a variety of art techniques, he paints incredibly detailed yet somewhat creepy works of art.

Some artist would probably call Dr. Rev crazy for using his own blood on all of his paintings, but so far his disregard for the norm has proven very successful, as his works have been exhibited all around the world. The Sydney-based tattoo artist uses airbrushing, standard paint brushing, scraping, smudging and layering to create his realistic masterpieces that aim to depict growth, human constraint while capturing the viewer’s heart and soul. In time, he has managed to progress naturally from tattooing and doing body art, to his new found passion, blood painting.

His ability to expand and push all boundaries of the art world, have earned Dr. Rev a great number of fans from all around the world. He isn’t the only artist in the world using blood as the main medium, but his artworks are indeed the finest I’ve ever seen created with plasma.

Dr Rev’s story can be found in his new book "Dr Rev – A man with blood on his hands", which you can find on his official site, BloodPainting.com, where you can also request your own custom blood painting.

Woman Collects Realistic Dolls, Treats Them Like Real Babies

Posted: 08 May 2012 02:02 AM PDT

Marylin Mansfield, a plus-size model from Staten Island, has turned her home into a creepy nursery filled with over 300 dolls, including reborn babies, Barbies and Goth-like Krypt Kiddies.

We’ve posted our share of wacky doll collectors here on Oddity Central, like this lady with a thing for antique dolls, this other one who loves clowns, or the couple who share their home with love dolls, but Marylin actually treats her plastic collectibles like real babies. ”I take them anywhere you would bring a real baby. I don’t do it for the shock value. I do it for myself because it makes me happy. I just loved when my kids were babies — and these babies stay babies forever. I buy them clothes. They never grow out of them and they never get dirty”, the tattooed platinum blonde says about her peculiar hobby.

“I know they’re not alive, but their facial expressions give them all their own personalities. When women hold babies, they release hormones. I think that’s what it is for me — it makes me feel good”, Mansfield is quoted by the New York Post. The mother of three real children has around 300 dolls in apartment, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Her collection includes reborn babies that look, feel and weigh just like real toddlers,  Barbie dolls, creepy “Living Dead” dolls and Goth-themed “Kreepy Kiddies”. She treats them all like real-life babies, washes them, changes them and never leaves the house without one.

Believe it or not, her real kids aren’t at all jealous of their mother’s attention towards her dolls. On the contrary, her young boy was inspired to start his own collection, and her 12-year-old daughter helps the platinum blonde wash and change her precious dolls. The husband doesn’t feel the same way about dolls as Marilyn does, but he’s gotten used to their enlarged family.

Mansfield, who was featured on the TLC hit show My Collection Obsession, says the lifelike appearance of her dolls attracts strangers’ attention every time she goes out with them. She gets all kinds of reactions out of them, from the usual ’How old is he?’ to Your baby looks a little pale. Is he OK?”. Most of the time she just ignores them but if they persist, she lets them know it’s not a real baby.

We’ve posted a similar story about a woman who bought a reborn baby and started raising it as a real one, and I thought that was creepy, but looking at some of the dolls in Marilyn Mansfield apartment nursery, she almost seems normal, now.

Spanish Family Quit Their Jobs, Sell All Possessions to Travel around the World in a Caravan

Posted: 08 May 2012 12:56 AM PDT

A young married couple, from Mijas, Malaga, have decided to quit their jobs, sell everything they own, and go on an adventure around the world, with their two little children, in a caravan.

Do you ever get so tired of your boring life and tedious job that you feel like leaving it all behind and going on an exciting adventure? I know I do, but I’m just too much of a coward to say goodbye to a comfortable lifestyle and venture into the unknown. Fernando Fernandez and his wife Fleur, both 29, were also a little scared to put everything they knew behind them and go on a trip around the globe, but they managed to lock their fears away and pursue their life-long dream of seeing the world. They realize it’s going to be tough living in a camper with their two small children, Aisha (5) and Noah (1), but they feel it’s a sacrifice worth making in order to truly live their lives.

Talking about how they decided on their daring trip, Fernando says he and his wife had always wanted to see the world, and since he was no longer feeling fulfilled after working nine years in a public institution, they decided it was time for a change. He suggested to Fleur a radical lifestyle change that implied selling everything they owned, buying a modern camper and going on their own adventure around the world. The current economic crisis in Spain was a factor that influenced their decision, but so was the age of their children, since this trip would have been much more difficult when they were older. Fernando had also seen a video of a person who went on a similar journey and that inspired him to follow in their footsteps.

At first, their family and friends were skeptical about their big plan, but after Fernando quit his job and they sold everything they owned and bought a camper, they began showing more support. The only things they took with them are a few clothes, some food, a collection of books, an e-book, some basic tools and toys for their kids. That’s all the baggage they felt they need on their long trip. Their main goal is to spend time together as a family, see and learn new things, and teach their kids their is more than just one way to live life.

The first stage of Fernando and Fleur’s big adventure starts with a trip in France but also includes visiting many European and Asian countries. Once they reach India, the second stage will begin, which involves seeing as much of Australia as possible and traveling to the Americas. Finally, the third and last stage will find them in Africa, the cradle of man. The two realize it’s going to be a challenge completing this long journey, but they hope the media attention they have been getting lately will attract sponsors willing to make things a little easier for them, like companies in the fuel, telephone or sports equipment industries.

The only thing that makes the Fernandez family sad is that grandparents will only be able to see their grandchildren via webcam for a very long time, but they take comfort in fulfilling their dream and living life as they always wanted. If you want to track their memorable journey, you can do so by visiting their blog, ViviendoNuestraVida.com, which translates as “living our lives”.
