Demotivational Posters: Taking the Motivation Out of Posters Posted: 08 Apr 2013 07:15 PM PDT One of the most exciting internet trends of recent years has been the rise of demotivational posters. To understand where these come from and why some of them are so darn funny we need to understand what a motivational poster is. These are, well yes, they are posters, you are right. And they are designed to motivate you. They might say stirring and patriotic things like "Your Country Needs You" or soft and fuzzy phrases like "You are Special". They usually build your self esteem and are always sober, earnest and never sarcastic or with huge amounts of vomit or butt cleavage in them. Demotivational posters, on the other hand, are designed to parody these motivational posters. They are often sarcastic, they reduce your self esteem and they often include horrific amounts of horrible body parts and weird stuff. Ok, that's enough of the theory let's move onto the practical part of the lesson.
The Twist on a Real Motivational Poster
We might as well start with this one, as it shows one which twists one of the most famous motivational posters with a bit of humour. You know the one where the cat is clinging on for dear life and it says "Hang in There Baby"? No? Do you even watch The Simpsons? What do you do with your life?
The So True It's Funny Poster
Yeah, when your car sucks and a better looking guy with a great car comes along and parks in an almost empty car park your horribly low self esteem will only let you do one thing. Come on, are you telling me that you have never done this? No? Am I the only one? Man, I need a better car.
The Gratuitous Body Parts Poster
Hey, you should be thanking me here; I choose one of the less gruesome ones I came across. If you want gross then just tell me, as I can do that too.
The Geeky Science Fiction Poster
As in most walks of life, Star Wars has got to be there somewhere, hasn't it? There are lots of demotivational posters with Star Wars images and clever little captions on them. This is one of my favourites. There might be some Star Trek ones as well if you look hard enough.
The Not So Cute Baby Poster
Babies feature a lot in demotivational poster as well, although rarely in a cute, isn't he lovely kind of way. No, they are usually demonic, satanic little creatures who are out to cause bodily harm and untold mischief. A bit like real life then.
The What Happened Next Poster
We've all been there, haven't we? We've all looked into loaded guns, put our head into ovens and wandered in front of nuclear missiles about to be fired. So why not laugh at other people doing it now?
The You're Doing It Wrong Poster
There are loads of these types of demotivational poster around. They all show people doing the sort of goofy thing which I would never do, like fall over a campfire, dance like a fool and misunderstand basic concepts like using the toilet. So why do they make my self esteem fall anyway? Because that's what they are meant to do, stupid.
The Ridiculous Poster
The downright weird ones are my favourites. These include things like wildly mismatched sumo wrestlers, strange animal hybrids and people with strange expressions on their faces. Of course, fighting animal hybrids with weird looks on their faces would be the best ones of all but we can't get everything we want, can we?
