Additive Refab: Old House Infilled with Minimalist Modules Posted: 16 Apr 2013 10:00 AM PDT New houses give architects a blank slate to work with, but a far more common question is: what does one do with an existing structure and limited budget? Rather than revamp the floor plan, modify the walls or refit new windows, Sepka Architekti took an additive approach to this remodel, filling in blank spaces with a toolkit of functional living accessories that also shape space. The result is a language of light wooden furniture, furnishings and fixtures that intentionally stand out against the bare backdrop provided, but unfold to accommodate the basic needs of the dwelling and create a secondary visual language in each zone. In some places, the resulting pieces hide additional functionality – in others, they become planes that wrap overhead and inform the look and feel of the room. |
Flexible Wooden Bookshelf Warps to Wrap All Book Sizes Posted: 15 Apr 2013 04:00 PM PDT Bookcases are generally one-size-fits-all affairs in theory, but in practice the space between each shelf is either too much or too little. This one adapts dynamically with each volume added or subtracted. Dubbed Chuck by German designer Natascha Harra-Frischkorn, the constituent shelves only a few millimeters thick, each layer bends to accommodate the volumes between the sheets. Minimalist metal end caps hold the ultra-slim planks in place but allow them to bend as needed in the space between. The result is sculptural, interactive and functional at the same time. |
