Unfolding Cube Prefab: Space-Doubling Emergency Shelter

This design is definitely still in the prototype phase, but the manner in which it opens is one well worth following up on – in a single motion, twice the square footage becomes available (as well as additional fenestration).

The rotating portion is made to wrap over interior fixtures and furnishings, and contains a built-in bed for rapid deployment and use.

And while the rigid-frame connections look sturdy, some questions still come to mind about the robustness of the glazing (presumably some form of Plexiglass-like shatter-proof material) as well as the need for windows elsewhere on the box (eliminating those would provide a more transportable shell).

Still, the basic idea is quite compelling – something of simple shape, cheap materials and conventional dimensions that could easily be packed in groups, but then deploys into a bigger, more useful and distinctive form. Design by Michel Antoun Zateef.

Slot Sofa: Compact Modular Couch Contains Table & Chairs

A sectional 3D puzzle, this clever piece of furniture makes use of that otherwise-wasted space normally sat upon without a second thought.

Matthew Pauk writes of his work: “Slot is a dynamic furniture piece. The sofa system finds new value and diverse functionality by blending the sofa, coffee table, and ottoman. It utilizes the common constructional gaps found between the cushions of the sofa by converting them into tracks for which the table can slide in and out. When slotted, the table acts as a console. When freed, it acts as a coffee table.”

Unlike many convertible furniture pieces, the default configuration is not only functional but attractive as well – it looks and works as it should, but clearly shows potential users that it has more in store if they care to explore.

But of course, things can slip and slide in the conversion process – a problem he also addresses through materials and design: “The magnetically retained sofa cushions always find and keep their optimal position either atop the table for an ottoman or below for a coffee table. Slot features traditional construction with textile upholstery and finished bent plywood.”

It is also neat to see how the designer both sketched out his many ideas along the way, but also proposes variations based on the same language of parts, materials and details.
