Apartment Wall Twists + Turns to Reveal Hidden Rooms Posted: 07 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST This teeny-tiny (conceptual) apartment space is a mere 60 square meters (or around 200 square feet), but uses creative construction to create distinct zones. The undulating, angular wall looks a lot like an oversized piece of modern art, but it is actually a wall with several openings that can be opened or closed based on the residents’ needs. When completely closed up, the wall is a sculptural wooden screen dividing the apartment in half. Its components look like randomly placed blocks, but they all serve a purpose. Their black metal framework moves in strategic ways to change the purpose and area of the apartment. The middle of the wall unfolds to reveal the kitchen with a special niche for the refrigerator. At one end of of room, three rotating blocks turn around to form the entertainment area and the door to the bedroom/office. When these blocks are closed, the entertainment area faces in toward the bedroom and office area. Finally, a small portion of the wall opens up to the bathroom. The interior, designed by Vlad Mishin, is a unique concept that adds some style to the idea of living stylishly in a very small space. |
Unfriendly Spiked Vest Maintains Personal Space on the Bus Posted: 06 Jan 2014 08:00 PM PST Sick of people invading your personal space on public transportation? Industrial designer Siew Ming Cheng invented the Spike Away vest to ensure that no one gets too close for comfort. The vest certainly won’t attract any potential dates, but it looks like it could be a futuristic piece of high fashion. Cheng got the materials for her prototype from an unlikely source: a hardware store. It’s made of off-the-shelf strips designed to keep pests out of gardens. The Spike Away vest is just a concept, but it’s useful enough that we could imagine it flying off of the shelves if it ever became a real product. |
Multi-Functional Bench Stores Your Fabric While You Rest Posted: 06 Jan 2014 02:00 PM PST When design team Dear Human wanted to design a new bench for their studio space, they knew that it had to be both fun and multi-functional. Thus, the Bolt Bench was born. A dream for anyone who sews, the Bolt Bench’s backrest consists of bolts of fabric. As you need pieces of fabric you can either cut them directly from the bolts or easily remove and replace the bolts. If you get tired of the look of the bench, it’s easy to change the rolls of fabric or just remove them and use the bare dowels as a backrest. Even wallpaper bolts can be mounted on the bench to create some truly unique combinations of colors and patterns. |
