Loft Puts Industrial, Modern + Traditional Design in Motion Posted: 21 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST A living space should be a lot of things – warm, inviting, comfortable, and a reflection of the residents’ personalities. Ukrainian architect Alex Bykov wanted all of these things for his own loft, and he achieved his goal by turning a stuffy square space into an open and flowing home with an abundance of movement throughout. The loft is now called Constant Motion, and one look at the floor plan explains why. The kitchen, which is known to many as the heart of the home, is at the center of the circular floor plan. Surrounding the kitchen are the lounge, library, kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. It is possible to move from one room to the next in a circular motion, covering the entire apartment without deviating from the circular path. The traditional brick, rich wood and soft textiles make this contemporary loft feel a lot like a more traditional home. Industrial elements and quirky little details give the home personality and keep it from feeling cramped. The loft’s bedroom has doors to keep it private, but it has no windows. To keep it from becoming too dark and small, glass adorns the tops of the walls. This lets sunlight shine in from the large living room windows just on the other side of the bedroom wall. The library was built on a raised floor to provide some additional storage space. This addition was built using low-cost materials and, along with its fun modular wall shelves, adds an element of playfulness and gives a great view of the living room. |
It’s LEGO’Clock: Wall Calendar Made Entirely of LEGO Pieces Posted: 20 Jan 2014 08:00 PM PST London design studio Vitamins is comprised of just a handful of people, but their schedules are unfailingly full. To let the entire office keep track of each other’s schedules, they designed something half wonderful and half crazy: a LEGO wall calendar. The calendar presents three months at a time, one horizontal grey stripe for each month. Vertical rows on each month board lay out every day of that month. Each employee gets a LEGO minifig to denote which line on the calendar is theirs. Every project has an assigned color. The team even designed a program to synchronize the calendar with the digital cloud-based version. Someone in the office snaps a picture of the calendar and the software automatically updates the digital calendar. It’s a creative mixture of tangible and digital information storage. As far as unique calendars and totally awesome LEGO projects go, this one is aces. To be honest, though, it’s kind of inscrutable to us. For the people who work with it every day, however, it’s an effective and charming way to keep track of their own schedules while letting everyone else know where they are during work hours. |
Oxymoron Desk Blends the Best of Work + Home Surfaces Posted: 20 Jan 2014 02:00 PM PST Soft couches and hard desktops are two parts of a home that seem mutually exclusive. But Russian designer Anna Lotova has designed a desk that incorporates elements of both hard and soft surfaces, and she aptly named it the Oxymoron Desk. Two plywood sheets make up the top and bottom layers of the desk. In between these boards sit two thick layers of soft, upholstered foam. Objects like books or file folders can be stuck between the two upholstered layers to hold them close at hand.
Additional pieces of plywood can be stuck between the layers to create impromptu side tables. A specially-designed lamp can also be sandwiched between the upholstered layers to make for a lovely and one-of-a-kind lighting solution. The tables and lamp can be placed at any position around the desk, making a completely unique office setup. A slot in the wood at the back of the desk is perfect for holding documents, stationery, and other supplies close at hand. The designer’s approach to the project was to create a humorous, playful solution that straddles the line between home and work environments. |
