| Thai Tech Company Turns Motorcycle Wheels into Cool LED Screens Posted: 14 Jan 2014 03:00 AM PST 'Wheelies' are the latest accessories for motorcycles, developed by World Moto, a Bangkok-based tech company. Their invention allows bikers to convert a bike's front wheels into full color LED screens – displaying mobile billboards, videos, animation or text of their choice. What's great about Wheelies is that the display is stationary even when the wheels are in motion. According to Paul Giles, CEO of World Moto, "The technology has the potential to turn essentially any wheel in the world into a brilliant, full-color billboard or video screen." He said that the idea could appeal to motorcyclists who want to put a face on their wheels. "It gives their bike a face, sort of like an avatar." The ad for the product is amusing – it shows a gang of 'hot' girls choosing a geek on a motorcycle with Wheelies, over a cool biker dude. Wheelies are fun and quirky, and can show 30 seconds of video on a loop, managed by a web application. But they're still in development stage. World Moto hopes to evolve the product to be able to stream video and play full length movies. Very practical. Not. |
| Artist Sews Portraits of His Family into the Palm of His Hand Posted: 14 Jan 2014 02:00 AM PST This has to be one of the most bizarre art-forms I've ever seen. Spanish artist David Cata has taken 'hand embroidery' to a whole new level. Using needle-and-thread, he embroiders portraits of people who have impacted his life on to his palms. He calls the series of works 'a flor de piel', which means 'Under the Skin'. You have to be a pretty intense person to be able to do something like this. Granted, he only embroiders the top layer of his skin, but it’s still got to hurt when he accidentally pierces his flesh! I watched two videos of his work – one where he sews on to his palm and the other where he (rather brutally) rips out the stitches. I really couldn't finish watching the latter. Let's just say that there was some blood involved. |
| Giant Gippsland – The World’s Largest and Most Extraordinary Earthworms Posted: 14 Jan 2014 01:00 AM PST What's 31 inches long, one inch thick, has no legs, and slithers through the ground? No, it’s not a snake, it’s an earthworm! The Giant Gippsland, found in Gippsland in south-eastern Australia, is the world's largest species of earthworms. Fully stretched, it can measure up to two meters in length. These slithering giants are surprisingly gentle creatures. They are quite hard to spot, spending most of their lives deep underground. Higher water content in the soil helps them breathe better. Their burrows can be as deep as 3 to 5 feet below the surface. Sometimes, heavy rainfall forces them to emerge out of the dirt. You might find also find their burrows in places where there's been a landslip. They are quite fragile – reckless handling can crush and kill them. Only a particular type of moist soil is suitable for their survival. If you happen to walk over their water-filled burrows, they will respond to the vibration of your footsteps. They start to crawl about and make squelchy noises that are quite easy to hear. So even though the Gippsland Giants are pretty rare, you'll know when they are around. |
