PlayStation TV Launching October 14 For North America

Sony’s set-top box that provides instant access to a variety of PlayStation content is headed to North America next month.

October 14 is the North American release of the PlayStation TV. For $99 USD, the Sony gadget is a set-top box where you can play games from the PlayStation Vita, PlayStation Classics, the PlayStation 3 (through PS Now), and the PlayStation 4 via Remote Play.

Sony promises "nearly 700 games" will be available to download and play in the United States and Canada when the device launches. Although, some PS Vita titles won't be able to make the “PS TV compatible” jump due to their use of hardware-specific gameplay, say using the Vita's back-touch in Tearaway for example.

The list is still ample though, and will feature popular PS Vita titles: God of War Collection, Persona 4 Golden, Killzone Mercenary, and many more. And if you're looking for a cheap way to dig through the PlayStation’s back catalogue, which consists of both PlayStation One and PlayStation Portable outings, the PS TV should do just nicely.

With PlayStation Now, Sony's video game streaming service, the PlayStation TV will also be able to play select PlayStation 3 titles, provided, of course, if you have a sturdy and speedy broadband internet connection.

Lastly, if you own a PlayStation 4 (over 10 million worldwide sold say, yes, you probably do), then the PlayStation TV will allow for Remote Play. But instead of staring at a small screen, as with Remote Play on Vita, users can stream and play PS4 games from their main display to another, and control them with a synced DualShock4.

The PlayStation TV, aside from it's $99 standalone version, will also come available in a system bundle that includes the box itself, a DualShock3 controller, an 8GB memory card, and The LEGO Movie Videogame. Another bundle, exclusive to Walmart retailers, reportedly has Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time instead; both available for $139.99 USD.

PlayStation 4 remote play might be coming to all Android devices

PlayStation 4 users already get to enjoy remote play on PS Vita and select Sony smartphones, but the feature might be coming to all Android devices.

The release of Sony’s Xperia Z3 made the rounds at tech & gadgets sites as it was set to become the first smartphone capable of pairing with a PS4 to do remote play, similarly to what the PS Vita users are already enjoying in their own portable consoles. While this is still set to happen, it might not be the only one as XDA Developers have claimed that this feature will be ported to all android devices, wheter Sony wants it or not (Sony claimed they had “no intent to bring remote play to any device other than Xperia”).

An XDA forum user who goes by XperiaPlaystation was the man behind this port, who explained that it “is to be installed by flashing the provided ZIP package and installing the provided APK as a normal app plus a few extra steps in between such as wiping the cache and rebooting. The port will work only with devices running Android 4.0 or newer. Additionally, Xperia Z1 owners may have an additional step of changing the build.prop in order to get this up and running.”

Apple and Bono Working on ‘Secret Project’ to Fight Music Piracy

Posted: 24 Sep 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Apple Event

With the figures of illegally downloaded music continuing to rise, Apple and Bono are reportedly working on a secret project to make users pay for music again.

Downloading music for free is a relatively easy task. I won’t talk you through how to do it (I like staying out of prison and there are plenty of walkthroughs on Google *hint hint*) but it’s easy enough. There are preteens who know that paying for an album that you might hate isn’t always the best idea and just like the aforementioned search engine, they can probably point you in the right direction too. So it makes sense that with the ease of use, no one really wants to shell out ten or more dollars for a half an hour compilation of lovingly crafted songs. But, the topic of songwriters and musicians in the digital age has often been a thorny one with some artists saying that streaming sites like SoundCloud, Spotify and YouTube leave them out of pocket. Apple and Bono want to come to their rescue though, with the U2 frontman revealing that they’re working on a ‘secret project’.

So just what could this secret project be? Well, as Bono revealed in an interview with TIME Magazine that’s set to be published in full next week, he and Apple will lbe putting together a new digital file type. According to the singer, the file type is “so terribly exciting to music fans that it will tempt them again into buying music”. He’s probably blowing his own horn a bit there and it’s unlikely that a collection of paid-for files will ever have the delicious allure of a (possibly, illegally) downloaded freebie, but we’ll hear him out for fairness sake.

What he also says is that it’ll be great news for those who make the music we listen to as many of them aren’t touring types. Ergo, money that they lose when you jump on your favourite neighbourhood torrent site and get the album for nothing can’t be made up by selling concert tickets, t-shirts and other assorted merchandise. That’s fair enough to say because few would disagree that those who make good music deserve to be compensated for it but is a new file type the best option rather than just looking at the existing model (iTunes, revenue from streaming etc.) and changing it for the better? That’s something we can’t answer yet but clearly Bono seems to think he and Apple are on to something special so as always, we’ll keep you posted once we know more.

Samsung Puts a Stop to Its Laptop Sales in Europe

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 01:59 PM PDT

Samsung Laptop Sales in Europe

With so many other things to work on, it’s no wonder that the Korean tech giant plans to stop manufacturing (or at least selling) laptops. For starters, Europe will be affected, but it wouldn’t be such a big surprise if the rest of the world were depleted of Samsung laptops in the near future.

Sony seems to have started a trend when it exited the PC business by selling Vaio. While Samsung won’t sell its laptop making division, it doesn’t seem keen to continue making them, either.

A Samsung spokesperson explained the company’s decision to stop selling laptops in Europe as follows: “We quickly adapt to market needs and demands. In Europe, we will be discontinuing sales of laptops including Chromebooks for now. This is specific to the region – and is not necessarily reflective of conditions in other markets.” The same spokesperson added that “We will continue to thoroughly evaluate market conditions and will make further adjustments to maintain our competitiveness in emerging PC categories.”

Emerging PC categories don’t seem to include Chromebooks, either, as these will be affected as well as by Samsung’s latest decision. That’s a pity, as the Chrome OS notebooks were quite reasonably priced for their purpose, and Samsung was along with Acer one of the first companies to help Google make this dream come true.

We’re left to wonder if the Korean company will put more effort in its all-in-one PCs, but the way I see it, that wouldn’t be a very bright decision, either. When an all-in-one PC breaks, people who don’t have a back-up solution have to wait for days or even weeks until they get the computer out of the service. This has been a major problem of Mac computers, but it definitely looks like Samsung wants to compete with Apple on more than just smartphones.

Samsung will now have more time to focus on its smartphones, tablets, wearables, VR headsets and so on, and it’s probably for the better that it took what may seem like a drastic decision. After all, it was only last month that Xiaomi overtook Samsung as China’s top smartphone vendor, so the Korean conglomerate company should watch its position better. Maybe other PC manufacturers will also follow the trend.

Google Now’s Flight Tracker Saves Frequent Flyers a Ton of Cash

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 01:21 PM PDT

Google Now

Assuming that you travel by plane on a regular basis and that you search your flights using Google, from now on you’re going to get price updates in Google Now, a feature that will certainly help save a lot of money.

Google Now already provides cards that are related to our online searches, and besides that, it is a life saver, in that it displays relevant, current information about weather, news, nearby places, stocks and so on. The latest feature to be implemented in this personal digital assistant is a flight tracker whose data is also correlated with your queries. The best thing about the Google Now flight tracker is that it displays more than just the date of the next possible departure, but also fluctuations in the price, something that has the potential of saving people money.

The flight price monitor is firm proof that Google’s service are very well integrated with one another. Besides that, the new card saves us a lot of time, and not just money, as otherwise we’d have to check Expedia, Orbitz, SkyScanner and other such online services quite frequently in order to make sure that we’re not passing up a great deal. Some are arguing that the new Google Now card takes away all the fun from searching for cheaper flights, but I have to disagree. The time you save by using the flight price monitor could be otherwise spent on looking for a nice hotel that’s close to your points of interest. Speaking of hotels… Hey, Google, think you could make a similar card for hotel room prices? I bet travelers wouldn’t mind at all.

Everything depends on which airlines Google is able to monitor, though. The ones who are traveling in business class don’t really care about the travel cost (even though the companies employing them should), but the rest of us wouldn’t decline a low-cost airline’s offer. Assuming that Google is able to track both low-cost and regular airlines, the addition of the flight price monitor card would be indeed great news.

I wonder what other things Google has in store for us, as the latest updates to its personal digital assistant have all been extremely helpful. The ones wondering how to trigger this one should visit Google Flights and start from there.
