Samsung Gear VR Headset Announced, Will Work With Galaxy Note 4 Posted: 18 Sep 2014 07:00 AM PDT As Oculus Rift's popularity takes off, Samsung prepared to launch a virtual reality headset of their own called the Samsung Gear VR.
The popularity of virtual reality (VR) headsets is taking off. Oculus Rift was already a popular entity, with the technology sticking a screen to your face and making you feel as though you are truly within a video game, while Facebook's subsequent $2 billion purchase of Oculus Rift's makers, Oculus VR, only confirmed that the market is taking off. Some people are incredibly weary though, concerned that VR is a fad, a gimmick or somewhere in between. The bottom line is that without Oculus Rift (or another competing headset on the market) we don't fully know the demand for the technology yet. However, that hasn't stopped Samsung as they've now announced a VR headset of their own named the Samsung Gear VR. Interestingly, rather than working with PCs (like the Oculus Rift) or games consoles (Sony's Project Morpheus headset works with the PS4), the Samsung Gear VR headset actually works with just one Samsung phone. With its primary back of the box feature being its glitzy qHD screen (read: a heck of a lot better than your average HD offering), the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is just the device for the job. How the Samsung Gear VR and the Note 4 work together is that the Note 4 simply just attaches to the front of the Gear VR headset and acts as its screen; it can even deliver 3D technology. The device will cost $199 if you're buying it without a screen but it will presumably cost an awful lot more if you don't have a Note 4 on hand and will need a Gear VR with a screen already equipped, but this is something for potential buyers to consider. Furthermore, it also remains to be seen how this will affect the VR market in the long term. Samsung obviously want to maximise revenue by forcing VR fans' hands into either trumping up many wads of cash for the Samsung Gear VR with a screen or switching over to the Samsung-branded walk of mobile life and get a Note 4 too, but what impact does that have in the larger scheme of things? The Gear VR was even developed in partnership with Oculus VR so I'd be curious as to see if and how the two VR devices can compete. As noted, we still have no idea if there will be a huge demand for VR headsets or if it's all just lip service but we'll know more when the device is released later this year. 8 Amazing Pop Culture Mashups Ideas for T-Shirts Posted: 18 Sep 2014 06:00 AM PDT One of the best artists to combine humor with a lot pop culture references in his work is Matt Cowan who came up with another excellent idea for a series of pop culture mash-ups that would make incredibly cool T-shirts. Prince JonosnokeJon Snow is the most emo of the Game of Thrones characters and Princess Mononoke might be the best of what Hayao Miyazaki gave to the world. Itchy the KillerCombining the worlds of a TV show inside a TV show cat & mouse that hate each other with that of a manga series called Ichi the Killer. Red DwarfGimli son of Gloin is the better known half of this duo. Red Dwarf is a brilliant TV Show which is something of a science fiction standup. The Kevin Bacon Mix TapeGo watch Guardians of the Galaxy. The Star Lord Bros.Another Guardians of the Galaxy reference, combined with the two most famous Italian plumbers in the world. Bender’s GameBender, one of the most obnoxious robots in the history of television, and the Ender’s Game book, which turned out to be a slightly crappy film. Tis Nothing but a ScratchCombining Darth Vader and Monty Python is a wonderful idea. Peppa PottsA combination of the delightful Peppa Pig and the Iron Man duo of Tony Stark and Pepper Potts. These works and a lot more can be found on his Deviantart page. For a bit more on awesome T-Shirt ideas, check out these 14 brilliant ones with Star Wars themes or these 21 T’s inspired by books. |
One-of-a-kind Nike Air Jordans Sport A PlayStation 4 Look Posted: 18 Sep 2014 05:00 AM PDT These stunning sneaks are by a UK designer are PS4 fanboy approved. If you're looking for a fashion statement that proudly describes your gaming allegiances, then look no further than these pair of custom Air Jordans styled after the PlayStation 4. They're called the "JRDN X PS4", and are the brain child of United Kingdom artist Jonny Barry from FreakerSNEAKS, a website devoted to coming up with unique sneaker designs not found in your everyday Foot Locker. Indeed, these shoes are truly something else. Using a pair of jet black Air Jordan 4 – a fine vintage sneaker selection I might add – Barry has stitched PS4 and PlayStation logos at almost every turn, specifically on the back end, loudly and proudly. And for the tongue, an image of the ardroable trouble-making robots from the PS4 augmented-reality game, The Playroom. The PlayStation fanboy pièce de résistance though (pictured way above): A HDMI port built into the sole of the shoe. Ridiculous? Yes. Amazing? Yes. Working? Nope. It's for pure show, along with the Jordan-branded HDMI cables that come with the shoes, and make for a neat carrying cord when plugged in. Barry plans on making a limited run of ten JRDN X PS4's at a price of around $950 each, more than twice the price of a single PS4. Pretty outrageous, but then so are these custom sneaks. Interested parties should send a direct email to info@freakersneaks.com or contact Barry on Instagram at freakersneaks, if they're seeking to purchase a pair. Be social! Netropolitan Social Network Has a $9,000 Admission Fee Posted: 17 Sep 2014 01:49 PM PDT Nothing screams “Look at me, I’m rich!” like a membership to an exclusive club. In modern times, the equivalent of that is being an user of Netropolitan, a social network that asks $9,000 for each new member. Dubbed Facebook for the rich, Netropolitan is a place where you can brag about your latest Bugatti or Lamborghini without having to endure the raised eyebrows of the plebes. After all, most people that are part of the 99% can’t stomach very well the pictures made by the wealthiest kids around. Launched by former Minnesota Philharmonic Orchestra conductor James Touchi-Peters, this “online country club for people with more money than time” came into existence because rich people are persecuted for having a good time. Messaging specialist Michelle Lawless at Media Minefield told the Los Angeles Times: “James and others have mentioned feeling judged for talking about certain topics on other social media outlets. Like they were bragging and met with a little ill will. Netropolitan is designed to be the place to talk about your last European vacation or new car without the backlash.” Netropolitan explained just how important the privacy of their clients is to them: “We simply cannot stress enough how important preserving our members’ privacy is to us. Other than announcing that at our launch we already had several hundred members, we will never publicly state the exact number of members in the club. And especially, we will NEVER release or verify the identity of any of our members – ever.” Anyone over 21 and with that kind of dough in their bank account is free to join Netropolitan. The $9,000 admission fee includes a $6,000 initiation fee and a $3,000 annual fee. For all this, people get a Facebook rip-off (not that Facebook is that original, as Selena Larson rightfully pointed out in her latest post on ReadWrite), but their experience is entirely ad-free. I should hope so, cause if I paid $9K to join a social network, I would get pretty angry when seeing any ads. As long as there are people on the planet who starve to death, I find such proofs of opulence very disturbing, especially since most people think only of themselves and their families, and pretend that charities are not for them. And they wonder why there’s backlash when they talk about their latest deeds… Be social! Logitech Harmony Line Expands, Gets Better at Controlling Your Home Posted: 17 Sep 2014 01:21 PM PDT Harmony remote controls, once nothing more than just universal clickers, will soon play an important role in home automation, as Logitech has just launched a few new products with those abilities. First showcased in June 2013, Logitech’s Ultimate Hub now becomes essential for smart homes. Its functionality was upgraded and was launched under a new name – Harmony Home Hub – along with a couple of new Harmony Living Home remote controls. The previous generation of Harmony remotes were only compatible with Philips Hue ambient lights and Nest thermostats. Fortunately, the ecosystem was expanded to include smart locks, thermostats, and lights made by August, Honeywell, Kwikset, Lutron, PEQ, Schlage, SmartThings, Sylvania, Yale, and Zuli. Harmony Home Control is a package that contains the Home Hub and a button-only remote, while the Ultimate Home bundle includes a fancier clicker. It should be noted that the former can control up to 8 devices, while the latter can be used for up to 15 devices. The current ecosystem includes 270,000 devices, which was inconceivable with regular universal remote controls. A list of the compatible devices can be found here. The hub features RF, IR, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi connectivity, so it’s basically impossible for it not to be able to control a device. The previous version of the hub came with a companion app that was available on iOS and Android. Since that’s essential for controlling a smart home, Logitech didn’t give up on that idea. Harmony’s new Android app features a new interface in order to better accommodate the new functionality of the hub. Mind you, the new Harmony remote controls retain the functionality of the old ones, so you’ll still be able to control your home theater with one of these. Overall, the new Logitech Harmony remotes look like the ultimate tools for home-entertainment and home-automation. The improvements are notable and make Logitech a pioneer in this field, with little to no chances for the competition. The Harmony Home Hub costs $99 and can be purchased as a stand-alone products, while the Home Control and Ultimate Home packages will be available for $149.99 and $349.99, respectively. These prices might look a bit steep, but considering the great number of devices that can be controlled and the (hopefully) long life of the products themselves, they definitely look like a good investment.
