Imgur launches Video to GIF, their GIF creation tool

Finally, an easy way to create GIFs straight from the image hosting kings of the Internet, imgur. This is their latest & newest tool, Video to GIF.

The all-encompassing image hosting website Imgur, famous for being the host to most of reddit’s content, has grown a lot to the point of almost becoming an independent social network itself, with its own separate identity and everything. This is all thanks to their high standards of service and sharing capabilities which are a huge improvement upon most other social sites.

In an attempt to keep improving on their offerings, Imgur had released a tool that converted GIFs into MP4 videos, which are lighter and better, but there is something about the GIFs that is just irreplaceable, and if you don’t believe us, just check any Tumblr blog. That is why the site is also offering Video to GIF, a new tool that does the opposite, and turns videos from any format to GIFs instead. The tool can be accessed at imgur.com/vidgif, and once there users only have to paste the URL of the video and choose the fragment they want to turn into a GIF. Furthermore, users can make simple additions such as text or legends.

Video to GIF is ridiculously easy to use, and because everything is done straight from your browser, you don’t need to install anything. All you need is an Imgur account and you can start creating GIFs like nothing. Be warned, though, the system is quite new and a few bugs might pop here and there so expect having to retry every so often.

Ensure your battery lasts enough so you can keep checking Star Wars memorabilia with Star Wars themed battery chargers, because recursion is pretty awesome.

SnapChat gets rid of stalking features, fans explode in rage

Snapchat-stalking-1

Snapchat, the app that became famous for not leaving logs nor traces of conversations recently received an update which in turn wasn’t well received by its users.

The latest SnapChat update brought a couple new features and changes to the table that were received with varying degrees of enthusiasm. Fans seemed to enjoy the Discover feature, a new way to explore stories from different editorial teams, allowing users to access a never ending amount of audiovisual content featured in different webpages and media.

The change that was not well received, though, was the removal of a feature the team hadn’t realized how important it was: users can no longer check who the best friends of their friends are (aka, who do they talk to the most), effectively cutting down on the stalking capabilities but also the fun factor. Users took their complaints all around the Internet, and especially to the app stores where SnapChat is featured.

Because of this Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel had to come forward and announce via Twitter that this functionality would be brought back in the very next update, with better interface and options to adjust itself to the needs of all users – which we imagine just means they’ll make it optional.

Facebook will add location-based suggestions to news feeds

Facebook location suggestions

Because stagnation means death, Facebook is trying new ways to interact with their users, now suggesting spots based on user locations.

Facebook is adding a new feature: the use of your phone’s location services to recommend places you could enjoy visiting. This new feature was announced las Thursday, and the company is calling it “Place Tips”. It uses not only your location, but also that of users in your friend list that have been there before, to the point of using their posts and pictures along with the recommendation. This is merely an optional feature, and users have to agree and give Facebook permission before location data can be accessed. As Facebook explained on a blog post, “place tips will show you fun, useful and relevant info about the place you’re at”.

With this move Facebook will start competing with Yelp & Foursquare, the biggest websites when it comes to social recommendations, food and night life. Your phone might even show popular menu items, or your friend’s favorite dishes if they happened to mention it on social media before. As of now, this feature only works in the New York City area via Wi-Fi and GPS, but it’s expected it will expand and grow in time.

Dasung 13.3 E-ink Monitor: the return of black & white

Remember black and white monitors from before the VGA times? They’re back – in a way that doesn’t mean technology involution.

Kindle users are familiar already with E-ink displays found in their readers, but they seemed to not have many other users. Yet that was only until Chinese company Dasung Tech came along and figured they could create a computer monitor based off of it. By using Fina‘s electronic paper display (EPD) module, they created a 1600×1200 USB monitor users can employ to read text without straining their eyes. Sure, it might be hard to check Instagram selfies in this type of screen, but it is meant to be a secondary display, and not a main one.

The display doesn’t come cheap, retailing in China for some $970 USD, yet for those who read a lot from their computer screens, it might be worth it in the end. Who knows, users might even end up saving money in the long term thanks to power efficiency…
