As If From Nowhere: Bookcase Conceals 2 Tables, 4 Chairs

A spare table and chairs can always come in handy, and theoretically should not have to take up much space – but short of cheap folding varieties, there are few solid-structure alternatives for such situations.

So what if you could simple slip out six furniture objects from their storage space right inside your bookcase? Orla Reynolds has a first class honours degree in Design Interior and Furniture from DIT and plans to take this concept public via a mass-produced version based on her work to date.

“As if from nowhere… is an independently functioning bookcase which houses four dining chairs and two tables that when placed together become a dining table. It is intended for small living spaces or for those who wish to cater to the unexpected guest.” To reinforce the concept, bright primary colors show you where the secret furniture is situated and provide natural highlights to the blank white bookshelves.

Interactive Furniture Pieces Light Up With Human Touches

Human contact is necessary to thrive as a person. We need the comforting reassurance of another person’s presence and touch, but luckily the things in our homes have no such needs. We touch them become we need to, but not because they need us. Would our interaction with our home objects change if they could respond to our touch?

A series of touch-sensitive furniture from designer NunoErin playfully explores the link between humans and the objects around us. Colorful lights under the surface of each piece appear when the furniture is touched by a human hand – or any other body part, for that matter.

The furniture pieces react to the electrical field associated with the human body. Running your fingers along the top of a bench or table causes a shimmering wave of light effects. Made with renewable surface materials, the furniture is meant to encourage the exploration of a tangible, physical and visual link between the our own actions and the objects with which we interact.
