Microsoft introduces the Surface Hub

Posted: 21 Jan 2015 11:24 AM PST

Microsoft Surface Hub

Microsoft talked long and lengthy about Windows 10 today, but still managed to show new hardware along with it: enter the Surface Hub.

Microsoft showed Windows 10 to the world today, but along with came a hardware piece that will be making the rounds. Meet the Surface Hub, a completely new type of product that is equal parts tablet, TV, mobile and computer. The Surface Hub is sort of an all-in-one computer / TV with sensors, WiFi, microphones, cameras and the rest of the smartphone and tablet essentials, but measures 84 inches and is capable of 4K resolution: it’s a true monster.

The really funny thing about the Surface Hub was that it was in front of the audience eyes the entire time, and was used throughout Microsoft’s presentation – no one batted an eye up until the point of the keynote today where the speakers introduced it. Of course, it’s going to be running Windows 10, and act as a collaborative hub in office environments – we don’t think this is viable for homes as most people don’t even have 84 inches of free wall to put up something like this up.

The Surface Hub will take advantage of its monster resolution to run many apps or display documents at once, and obsiously, has Skype for business built in. We hope it has a Netflix app, though, that would be useful for lunch time.

Microsoft haven’t announced the release date just yet, but we will update you as more information becomes available.

Mad Catz Introduces Hybrid Game Controller L.Y.N.X. 9

Mad Catz' latest gaming peripheral looks more Optimus Prime or Megatron than your typical third-party controller, but that is exactly its selling point.

Revealed at this month's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the L.Y.N.X. 9 is a hybrid game controller for both PC and Android devices that can change its practical form, almost like the transforming robots of cartoon and film fame.

With a few simple arrangements, the L.Y.N.X. 9 can change from its compact, easy-to-travel-with form, to fit a wide range of situations.

Need a fully-sized gaming controller for your PC, with dual analog sticks, shoulder buttons, and the works? The L.Y.N.X. 9 can do that. How about an attachable controller for your tablet or smart phone that can give you the best of portability and control input? The L.Y.N.X. 9 can do that too, and with ease. So long pesky on-screen touch controls.

The L.Y.N.X. 9 promises to be a "no-compromise, full-size controller experience" that "will work with pretty much anything." And from what is included with the L.Y.N.X. 9, Mad Catz means it. They’ve also built in a small track pad and an in-built mic to the controller, and for situations that call for texting, a keyboard module that snaps into the bottom.

Mad Catz plans on release the L.Y.N.X. 9 sometime in 2015, and at an interesting price. $299. Expensive, yes; much so than any current third-party controller out on the market. But if the L.Y.N.X. 9 is superb in function, it might attract the high-end gaming consumer that’s looking for something to bridge the gap in all their input needs, both on the couch and on-the-go.

The worst passwords of 2014 are as terrible as ever

Posted: 21 Jan 2015 04:00 AM PST

Terrible Passwords 1

If statistics are to be believed, it’s very likely that your password might be included in this list, which compiles the most used ones around the web. If so, save yourself some headaches and change them.

Las year we saw a surge in high-profile hacks affecting giants like Microsoft, eBay, UPS, and the most renowned, the Sony Pictures one which made the news as the hackers claimed for the movie “the Interview” to not release. Without trying to scare anyone, we just wanna point out that just because you don’t own a multi-million company, it doesn’t mean you’re not going to become a target, and if you use any of these passwords here, chances are you might.

This list comes all through SplashData‘s research who have compiled their annual list of the most common passwords on the web. This list was compiled from documents with over 3.3 million leaked passwords that came appeared throughout the year 2014 in North America and Western Europe, mostly, but with some other countries for good measure. It features gems such as “123456″, “password” and “batman” (which although awesome is not very secure). You can see the list below these lines.

1) 123456
2) password
3) 12345
4) 12345678
5) qwerty
6) 1234567890
7) 1234
8) baseball
9) dragon
10) football
11) 1234567
12) monkey
13) letmein
14) abc123
15) 111111
16) mustang
17) access
18) shadow
19) master
20) michael
21) superman
22) 696969
23) 123123
24) batman
25) trustno1

The good news is that these common passwords are less in raw numbers every year. The bad news is they still represent an almost 3% of the total combined. But, again, there’s no cause for alarm, if you see your password in this list, go and change it and join the common cause to make the Internet a more secure environment.

Google to invest in SpaceX, the satellite and rocket company

Google Campus

Recent reports by a series of websites around the web suggest Google might be getting ready for a big investment in SpaceX, a company dedicated to create rockets and satellites.

As reported by The Information, Google might be getting ready to drop a huge sum of cash in SpaceX, Elon Musk’s company who creates and develops satellites and rockets, and use these resources to create a satellite network capable of providing internet to non-urban and hard to access areas where finding a decent provider at a price that is not a rip-off is a huge task.

These Google satellites would orbit Earth at lower altitudes than regular satellites (1.200 km instead of the usual 35.000), which would generate an advantage when it comes to coverage and speed compared to other competing technologies like optic fiber. Elon Musk hismelf was quoted saying that the speed of light was “40% faster in the vacuum of space than it is through fiber”.

Rumor has it that Google’s investment will be around the 10 thousand millions of dollars, and combining that with the effort Google’s partners are expected to put forth, it’s just a massive, incredible sum of money.

Xiaomi Mi Bluetooth Gaming Controller Gets Finally Launched

Posted: 20 Jan 2015 12:55 PM PST

Mi Bluetooth Gaming Controller 01

If yesterday’s rumors suggested that Xiaomi might have a gaming console in the works, today, the Chinese corporation launched a Bluetooth game controller, really the missing element of a complete gaming environment.

Xiaomi’s Bluetooth game controller isn’t exactly a suprise, as it has been seen in September on various sites, GizChina being one of them. However, the official launch took place today, and this is a great representation the beginning of Xiaomi’s involvement in the gaming hardware industry.

Not let me explain what I meant earlier with Xiaomi having a complete environment. Making a gaming console wouldn’t have made much sense for the Chinese company, as it already has the devices to run the games, a controller being all that was missing. Do you want to play on the go? Grab the Mi Bluetooth gaming controller and your smartphone. Want to play Android games on a slightly larger display? Grab your Mi Pad tablet. Want to game on an even larger screen? Well, if you’re in China or the surrounding countries, you could get a Mi TV. Maybe Xiaomi will also make a console in the future (even though I’d much rather prefer it sticked to mobile devices), but we’ll just have to wait and see.

The body of the controller is made from high-quality materials sourced from Samsung (Xiaomi surely likes to have its name associated with big names when it comes to the makers of its components), and while the design is not particularly revolutionary, it’s exactly what you need for gaming on the go.

However, that doesn’t mean that Xiaomi’s Bluetooth controller doesn’t bring anything new to the table. The vibration motors are not equal, so the feedback will differ, depending on what you’re doing in the game. On top of that, the buttons are aware of the pressure you apply to them, something that might come in hand while playing racing games.

Five days ago, Xiaomi launched its new flagship smartphones, the Mi Note and the Mi Note Pro. Seeing the prices of those two devices, some people (mostly Apple fanboys, I assume) started accusing Xiaomi of using a bait and switch strategy. That’s what they thought when a company known for affordable devices started launching products with a higher price tag. The way I see it, the premium features of the Mi Note Pro fully justify that price, and even if it won’t sell at that price outside of China, it will still be a whole lot cheaper than Samsung, HTC, Sony, LG and Apple’s flagships.

That being said, the Mi Bluetooth gaming controller is a very affordable device, priced at just 99 yuan, the equivalent of $16.
