Escher-Inspired Home is Covered in Grass & Abstractions

Inspired by a paradox-loving painter and sketcher, this offbeat hillside home puts the ‘fun’ in ‘functional’ … then takes the ‘ctional’ right back out.

Weichlbauer Ortis Architects designed this home for the Austrian countryside with its own set of strange juxtapositions – cubic volumes covered in grass, contrasting with the natural greens all around, for instance.

But the most remarkable – and really strange – set of steps, are, well, the steps … a series of concrete stairways that often go nowhere, start or stop abruptly, or are even turned on their sides.

Weird window extensions reinforce the surrealistic effects of these other design moves, making for a playful and dizzying composition on all fronts (and backs, and sides, and upside-downs).
