Minimalist Black Metal Staircase Stands Out in White Room

Posted: 18 Jun 2013 10:00 AM PDT

In definitively Italian style, this staircase manages to be both minimalist and outrageous at the same time – a sharp linear black work contrasting with a classical white space.

Designed by Francesco Librizzi Studio (images by Giovanna Silva), the metal frame is thin and modern almost to a fault – climbing or descending requires careful steps.

Still, for the space, such a bare-bones approach works aesthetically as the stairs become a sculptural object, and practically given the limited room to work with.

About the designer: “Born in 1977, Francesco Librizzi graduated in Architecture in Palermo. In 2005 he founded Francesco Librizzi Studio, an architectural practice based in Milano involved in architecture, interiors, exhibition design and product design. During this years the studio has developed architectural devices from small to large scale. Some of this works have been awarded prestigious prizes, have been published on international magazines and have been exhibited by important institutions.”

Key-Free Lock: Smartphone App Rekeys Domestic Security

Posted: 17 Jun 2013 04:00 PM PDT

No need to swap out your existing deadbolt with a newfangled device – this circular switch slots right over your locking mechanism, but shifts the method of unlocking to entirely new territory.

Designed by Jason Johnson and Yves Behar, the Smart Lock can sense your approach automatically, saving you the trouble of taking out your virtual ‘key’, or can be activated remotely for house guests or a forgetful child or spouse.

Further settings include the ability to allow certain persons to key in codes at particular times or on particular days, so a delivery can be made, dog can be walked or house can be cleaned, all without handing over a full-time means of access.

From the creators: “Have you ever lost your keys? I am willing to bet that 99% of us have. In the last year, 20% of Americans have been locked out of their homes at least once. Humanity has been carrying keys, sharp pieces of metal in our pockets, for 200 years…it’s time we think of something else.”

Recycled Pocket House: Custom Rustic Cabin on Wheels

Posted: 17 Jun 2013 10:00 AM PDT

Part prototype, part experiment, but entirely excellent, this mobile shelter was a design/build labor of love from its scrappy start to its rustic finish.

Aaron Maret made this 200-square-foot structure mainly from reclaimed and salvaged materials and local upcycled hardwoods.

After spending time downsizing and living in it himself, he has put the building up for sale … and unfortunately been criticized by some for his $64,000 asking price. Sure it is a lot per square foot, but unique and custom come at a cost – critics are of course welcome to construct their own.

From its creator: “This tiny house on wheels is a synthesis of thoughtful design, detail-oriented craftsmanship, and a healthy dose of patience. Five years in the making (longer if you count the design time), this has been a labor of love and a playful experiment in alternative construction… and living.”
