Meccanica: Flexible Open Framework Kitchen Shelves

Posted: 29 Jun 2013 10:00 AM PDT

A lightweight metal framework system works in conjunction with washable fabric panels to create flexible shelving for the kitchen and other rooms in the home, without the use of glue and formaldehyde. The shelving connects using mechanical joints, making the system 80% reusable and 100% recyclable. Pine panels make up the sides of the drawers. Doors and drawer faces are available in iron or wood.

The Meccanica system by Valcucine is designed to be customizable, making it possible to mix and match the various materials and finishes as desired. The fabric, which comes in a variety of colors, is teflon-coated and elasticized, so it’s resistant to heat, stains, water and steam.

The open design eliminates the need for side panels and doors throughout most of the system, reducing material use. Work surfaces are made from a composite material made from recycled paper and a natural resin byproduct of sugar cane processing.

Once they’ve served their purpose as shelves, the iron elements of the framework can be sanded down and lacquered for reuse in another form.
