Felines First: Cat House Interior Designed with Cats in Mind Posted: 13 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT Cat-friendly built-ins are not an entirely new phenomena, but few clients go so far out of their way to include their feline friends not only in their architectural plans but interior photographs as well. Hey!Cheese is a photography, art and design collective in Taipei, Taiwan – the group managed to fit a cat into most of their shots of these living, dining and kitchen spaces. Some of the structures, like the scratching post, ramps and walls are explicitly cat features – in other instances, cat-friendly sofas and other feline favorites, like laptops, simply make their way into the picture. But even without the cat involved, the design stands on its own as well – so while a later buyer might be puzzled by the ramping bookshelves, they are also aesthetically interesting enough to work, even without a furry friend playing on them. That, or perhaps a ferret, chinchilla or rat would find them fun as well. |
Spatial Relativity: Average Home Sizes Around the World Posted: 13 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT The tiny homes movement gaining traction in the United States seems like spatial extremism to some people – what average family could possibly get by in under 1000 square feet? It turns out that in some countries, that amount is actually already above average. The above infographic (shown in metric above for our audiences abroad, but also in square feet at the bottom of this page) illustrates just how unusual the situation is in America. Outside of Australia, coming in near second and itself a land with a very low population density, homes in the US are huge. And this is not a historic constant for the United States either – it represents a huge uptick in average square footage over the past few decades, in which homeowners have demanded (or been sold) the idea of a larger home. Keep in mind that these are averages – so for all of those large homes skewing the data upward, there are likely some ultra-small spaces bringing the overall data back down. Tessellated Furniture: Tetris-Style Modular Seating System Posted: 12 Aug 2013 04:00 PM PDT Escher, Tetris, tessellation and fractals all come to mind with this colorful set of angled seating elements. Though their shapes may appear unruly at first, any awkward first impression is quickly dissipated once you see the elements deployed. Developed by Alexander Lotersztain, the one catch (or at least counter-intuitive element) of this Prisma set may be the fact that each color does not necessarily denote a single shape, as it would in classic puzzle-piece games, so you may have to work a little harder to see how the pieces fit together. But once you get past that hurdle, you will find there are all kinds of formations possible, from back-to-back individual seats to stretched-out sofas with attached side tables, divided (or not) with backs and sides. The constituent pieces are themselves straight-forward: medium-density fiberboard with either fabric or leather finishes, the former available in bright and distinctive colors, or simply unfinished altogether. |
