Sofa Goes From Relaxing to Heart-Revving in Just Seconds Posted: 16 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT Imagine that you are sitting on your sofa, watching a movie – and suddenly you are overcome with rage at just how terrible the movie is. What do you you: write a strongly-worded letter and then throw it away? Throw your best china against the wall? No, you just lift up the back of your sofa and start beating the stuffing out of it. Created by German Designer Tobias Fränzel, the couch is called Champ. The backrest easily moves into a vertical position to create a punching bag. You can take out all of your frustrations on the punching bag or just fit in a few minutes of working out during the commercials. The designer says that Champ is safe even for small children because there are no metal joints to pinch little fingers or toes. The frame is constructed of one continuous piece. When the punching bag is down, the sofa is a modern, curvy, interesting-looking piece of furniture. When it’s in the ready position, it looks like an odd (but quite possibly effective) piece of gym equipment. |
Composting Utensils Let You to Eat (With) Your Veggies Posted: 15 Aug 2013 04:00 PM PDT Biodegradable plastics made of vegetable material have been available and in use for quite some time, but it’s easy to use these products without thinking about where they’ve come from. Designer Qiyan Deng combined the practicality of the biodegradable plastics with visual and textual reminders of what they are made of. The series is called Graft, referring to the melding of natural materials and natural forms. The utensils take on the colors, textures and approximate shapes of natural vegetables. The designer realized that vegetables are lovely in nature, so why not honor the vegetable sources of these objects by using their natural shapes and textures in the items they are made into? Deng took into account the functions that the objects would be used for. The fork and knife resemble savory foods because that is their most likely use. The cup, reminiscent of a citrus fruit, reflects the fact that sweet beverages are destined to be drunk from it. These lovely objects are designed to give the user pause before throwing them away – they may be compostable, but being made aware of their history somehow makes them seem a bit more precious. ... |
