In House: A Dining Set Made of Ordinary Household Items

In the age of internet shopping and instant gratification, many people fantasize about being able to print their objects of desire on a home 3D printer. Product designer David Steiner completed a project that is nearly the opposite of ordering or making new objects.

cup and bowl

The project is called In House, and it consists of household objects made only with things already in Steiner’s flat. His inspiration was the washing machine: it’s so big, yet it isn’t used constantly and can only do one thing. This led to Steiner looking for other ways to use the things already in his home. He fashioned a rotating cast out of an embroidery hoop, then put it into the washing machine where it could spin around a mold.

pinch pots

Using the washing machine casting method, Steiner created the plate and bowl for his DIY dining set. To make the cup, he repurposed a mixer into a small pottery wheel. He then used sugar paste as a kind of clay and threw the cup on the makeshift pottery wheel. To make the pinch pots seen above, Steiner used cork from a notice board and shaped it with a blender he repurposed into a lathe. He added color to the outside with wax crayon.

cutlery and bottle opener

The cutlery set and bottle opener have similarly odd histories. Steiner made molds out of old cereal boxes, then melted some pewter on his stove. The molds turned out a perfectly formed set of tableware that look just like some of the modern sets seen in upscale home furnishing stores.

tray

The tray was made with wooden rulers, sanded with his blender lathe and steam bent in the microwave. According to Steiner, this was one of the more difficult parts of his experiment. He had to buy so many rulers that he worried what the stationery store might think of his unusual buying habits.

hanging lamp

The centerpiece of the project, the above lamp, began its existence as a cookie sheet. Steiner made the needed cuts and then bent the lampshade into place using a door frame.

In the In House video, Steiner shows all of the tricks and inventions he used to fabricate these household objects. The project is meant to show that most of us already have the things we need if we look at life creatively.

Above + Beyond: Live, Floating Bamboo City Built by Kids

Not many people would deny that children can teach us a great deal about the world. Their interesting viewpoints and limited experiences give them the ability to see things from a completely unique perspective.

This is part of why architects Yu Hui, Sam Cho and Mu Wei wanted to work with kids while building “City in Sky.” The project was organized by Natur Life Organic and carried out by 39 children and their parents over a period of three months in Wuhan, China.

Working only on the weekends, the children sketched and talked about how they wanted their city to be. The grown-up architects and the kid architects worked together to plan out a floating city.

Large, strong trunks of bamboo were arranged in inverted pyramids to hold up the flooring and tiny houses. This makes the houses appear to “float” above the ground.

Live bamboo was used in the process as well. Two open-air “houses” use living, growing bamboo as their architectural support. These components will continue growing and changing the appearance of the entire “city.”

Hui, the architect in charge of the overall project, contends that architects around the world are forgetting how to use materials other than concrete and steel. This project is a challenge to them to consider other ideas and move toward using sustainable materials.

Seen as a whole, those little house-shaped boxes on a platform really can be called a city. The main platform and the two open-air growing houses provide a common space for the children to play and socialize.

Since living materials were used in the construction, the architects are reluctant even to consider the City in Sky to be an artificial structure. It grew from the active imaginations of children and, with love and care, will continue to grow and thrive…just like the kid architects who built it.
