Kaleidoscope Cabinet Multiplies Precious Possessions Posted: 15 Sep 2013 10:00 AM PDT What would otherwise be a relatively ordinary display of antique silver turns into a kaleidoscopic array of reflected imagery painted with rainbow hues in ‘The Space Between the Void.’ This piece by Sebastian Errazuriz visually multiplies anything that is placed inside it with a lining of triangular beveled mirrors. “This particular cabinet was created in memory of an old aunt I had when growing up that always told us we could ‘look but never touch’ the beautiful objects she had in her house,” says the artist. This inaccessibility made the objects seem even more special. But Errazuriz included a way to enjoy the objects that’s even more magical than simply opening the cabinet doors and taking in the full effect. Installed in one side of the cabinet is a peephole that enables the viewer to glimpse the illuminated interior in all its dizzying beauty, the cherished items seeming to go on and on forever. |
Abstract Modern Nest House Mimics Twigs and Branches Posted: 14 Sep 2013 10:00 AM PDT A woven lattice of timber and aluminum bars leads this striking abstract house in Singapore to resemble a nest perched in a tropical forest. The stacked volumes of the house itself are made of concrete and stone in a bark-like texture to mimic trees lifting the living spaces into the sky. The home is part of a family compound, situated so that it opens up onto the gardens and separate home of the owner’s grandfather. Layered terraces on various levels of the house step down into the walled garden, with spaces separated via blade-like walls that provide a striking sliced effect when viewed from the east or west. The ‘twigs and branches’ of the wood and metal screen not only make this home stand out visually, but also serve to provide privacy and filter sunlight and air, protecting the large glazed walls and open balconies. |
