House Cast in Liquid Stone: Ultramodern Cliffside Residence Posted: 02 Nov 2013 07:59 AM PDT Perched on a rocky hillside in the highlands of Maharashtra, India is a house cast in liquid stone, conceived as an ‘outgrowth’ of the basalt upon which it stands. The ultramodern home projects out from the landscape as a solid geometric form made with a mixture of water, sand, cement and granular basalt stone in a calming matte black and gray. The home, by SPASM Design Architects, consists of a series of rectangles with several levels that allow different views of the stunning mountain surroundings and voids offering tranquil shaded shelter. While a bit imposing, the sense of solidity and strength is an intentional reflection of both the home’s relation to the site and to the architects’ intention of making it a safe place that can stand up to the climactic changes of the region, which include severe monsoons. Reflecting pools multiply the sky, while the black and gray of the stone provides a quiet contrast against the bright green of adjacent foliage. Entering the home, one gets a sense of ‘burrowing’ into a refuge that is cave-like without feeling claustrophobic. |
Cozy Outdoor Fireplace Hut is a Warm Glowing Play Place Posted: 01 Nov 2013 10:00 AM PDT This artful outdoor fireplace from Haugen/Zohar Architects is integrated with a nearby playground, allowing families a chance to duck in and take the chill out of a cool evening playtime. The fireplace, built on a playground in Trondheim, Norway, is a wonderfully whimsical structure that provides a place not only to warm up, but to spend time telling stories. Its unique shape is reminiscent of traditional Norwegian turf structures, with a hole at the top for the smoke to escape. A concrete base provides a seating area all around the fire, encouraging bonding over scary stories or tall tales. Kids are encouraged to play in the structure, giving it a triple life as a decorative structure, a functional warming-up space, and an extension of the nearby playground. The architects, faced with an extremely limited budget, found an inexpensive building material at a nearby construction site. The small wooden pieces, stacked in 80 circles, let a warm glow through when a fire is lit at night. A sliding door is fitted to secure the inside of the little hut when it’s not in use. |
