Frank L. Wright House Finally Built 74 Years After Creation Posted: 06 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST Frank Lloyd Wright was one of the most influential architects of the 20th century, designing iconic buildings and acting as the mastermind behind the campus of Florida Southern College. Unfortunately, many of Wright’s creations would never be built in his lifetime. Now, the Florida Southern College campus can boast their 13th Wright-designed building. The latest project is one of Wright’s “Usonian homes,” a series of family homes that was designed to be affordable for the typical American family. The Usonian home won’t be used as a family home on the college campus, however. It will join the Sharp Family Tourism and Education Center, a collection of Wright’s work and celebration of his life. To construct the historic home, 2000 clay bricks were made by hand by talented craftsmen. Six thousand colored glass blocks give the illusion of stained glass windows. The home’s interior is adorned with furniture designed by Wright specifically to reside in his series of Usonian homes. We can’t help but think that Frank Lloyd Wright would be pleased to see another of his creations finally brought to life, 74 years after he designed it. (via: Dezeen) |
Pi Workstation: Desk, Dining Table & Bookshelf in One Posted: 05 Jan 2014 02:00 PM PST The smaller the space you have to work with, the more each piece of furniture has to count. Bulky, heavy, stationary furniture that only serves one purpose severely limits the functionality of a room. Multipurpose or transforming pieces are the way to go – like this clever workstation by Joe Manus. Pi Workstation is a compact desk for small spaces with a sleek look in a natural or ebony wood finish with a black, white or steel base. An extension on one end offers extra seating. That bench could be used for additional books or display of other objects, too. Remove the small bookshelf, and the desk becomes a dining table for two. The design was inspired by turn-of-the-century schoolhouse desks, and is, as Manus describes it, “3.14159 options in one and endlessly cool.” |
