Virgin America Targets Business Travelers with In-Flight Social Network

Virgin America In-Flight Social Network

Making connections is very important in the business world, so why not do this while flying? While contained in such a limited space, you might as well try to make new friends.

Using Gogo Wifi and the Here on Biz geo-location app, Virgin America put together what they claim to be the world’s first in-flight social network. Anyone interested in this new way of making connections needs to log into Here on Biz using a LinkedIn, Twitter or Facebook account. Since many airlines offer Wi-Fi while in-flight, accessing these social networks has never been a problem, but exchanging accounts would have required a previous interaction, whereas Virgin America’s in-flight professional social network works as the ideal ice breaker between business travelers.

People we’re traveling with no longer have to be single-serving friends, as Tyler Durden called them in Fight Club. Until now, people seated next to each other either didn’t speak at all to one another, or they kept everything to a minimum. Using Here on Biz, however, helps people get more details about their flight partners.

HereOnBiz, the developer of the eponymous app, also implemented chat functionality in this social network, but in order to carry a conversation, the participants need to have a professional connection. The major downside of Here On Biz is that it is available only on the App Store, so Android users are neglected, at least for the moment. After downloading the app and connecting through Gogo, business travelers are required to use another social network account to connect to Here on Biz.

In conclusion, anyone who wants to “take advantage of downtime in-flight to build or renew their professional connections,” as Virgin America puts it, should buy an iOS device, in case they don’t already own one, and give this in-flight social network a try. Who knows, they might actually make the deal of the century with a total stranger who claims to be a billionaire.

In other news, 24-year old Gabe Whaley developed Wingman, an app that helps people to hookup while in-flight. Whaley and Virgin America obviously have different target audiences for their apps and social networks, but the ultimate goal is the same. Both of them help you make friends, either for business or for personal matters.

Jalousier Connects Your Blinds to the Internet of Things

Prototype design

Proper home automation calls for every object inside a house to be connected either to the Internet or to an internal network. Jalousier is a tiny little gadget that makes sure that your blinds will never look or work the same again.

The change made by Jalousier is for the better, of course. This portable device could be considered an upgrade to automated blinds. It attaches to venetian blinds and enables you to control them from a smartphone or tablet over Wi-Fi. The device itself is truly revolutionary, in that it adjusts the slats depending on lighting and weather conditions, as well as on the time of the day. At first, this may look like yet another device that consumes energy, but in fact it saves a lot of time and money by automating a task that is performed at least twice a day. On top of that, Jalousier also helps you save on cooling or heating, by blocking the rays or maximizing the light and heat that enter the room.

Sergey Vinogradov, the head of the family team that developed this portable device, pointed out that Jalousier “offers endless possibilities of customization, like syncing your blinds with an alarm clock, shared access with family, and getting a reminder to look outside to see a brilliant moon or even the first snowfall of the year.”

Jalousier is not only cheaper than electric blinds, but also works a lot better with your natural rhythm. It can be programmed to open the blinds gradually at sunrise, so you can wake up gently and in as a natural way as possible. At night, it can either seal the light so you can rest in complete darkness, or it can allow the moonlight or streetlight get in.

In terms of OS compatibility, there shouldn’t be any problems, as Jalousier comes with apps both for Android and iOS. The app also enables you to create groups of blinds, for simultaneous operations.

The developers are looking to raise $140,000 on Indiegogo for mass producing the device. Securing a Jalousier is as simple as backing the project with $99 as an early bird or with $129 when the first spots are gone. Various packages are available, with the most expensive one costing $9,900. That should be enough for a few blocks of flats, as it includes 1,000 Cordboxes.

Never mind steampunk, this is as futuristic as it gets when it comes to Victorian Era style: literally decorating the attic with space-age gizmos is quite something!

If you have some £3,250,000 to spare (that would be around $5.35-million USD, for those of us who don’t favor the Queen), there is a Victorian mansion for sale in London that might catch your interest. Besides way too many rooms and square meters, it includes a special attic that looks like a futuristic spaceship. When I was a kid, I was just happy if I had a TV in my room, man…

Super Mario Bros Doorbell Makes Coin Sounds

Mario Bros Doorbell

Everyone loves the ultimate video game icon, Super Mario Bros, but do you love him enough as to want him by your doorbell? If the answer is yes, boy, do we have something for you.

Mario Bros Doorbell

A programmer and Super Mario fan is the man behind this geniality, and his name is Joseph Thai. What this does is allow visitors to collect coins whenever they ring the bell by triggering the classic sound effects from the NES game. The problem? Now they have an incentive to ring as much as they can. The game even makes the 1-UP sound once the 100 coins are reached so that’s quite something, too. You can learn more about it by watching the video right below these lines.
