Soothing Medical Center Interior Keeps Kids + Parents Calm Posted: 13 Feb 2014 08:00 AM PST The Edgecliff Medical Centre forAutistic Children in Sydney, Australia received a soft, modern makeover courtesy of Enter Architecture. Keeping in mind the needs of not only the staff, but of the special patients as well, the architects designed an interior that is bright, inviting, safe, and visually interesting. The flowing shapes and soft, rounded edges are not merely an aesthetic decision. Corners were kept out of the equation to prevent children from running into sharp edges and getting hurt. The space was kept wide open with few visual obstructions so that parents could keep an eye on their kids with no moments of temporary panic if one ducked behind a heavy piece of furniture. Soft furnishings add to the safe, comfortable environment. Kids can flop down on cushy beanbag chairs or climb into sculptural plastic seats. Bright toys and rugs, along with the light beaming out from behind the digitally fabricated curved architectural elements, provide gentle visual stimulation for the young patients. The calming powers of light and color were put to work subtly, but with a wonderful effect. A neutral color pallette was used for most of the small space, with one bold orange accent wall. The overall effect is one of serenity and safety – perfect for the very special children who visit the site regularly. |
Graceful Chopsticks are Two Elegant Halves of a Whole Posted: 12 Feb 2014 02:00 PM PST This very unique set of chopsticks proves that things are not always as they seem. Designed by Japanese design studio in collaboration with traditional chopstick maker Hashikura Matsukan, the Rassen chopsticks begin as a whole and become two sides of a pair. Chopsticks come in pairs, as everyone knows, but not the Rassen. They come as a single unit which looks just like a single rounded chopstick. Upon closer inspection, it becomes obvious that there are actually two chopsticks wound up and held together by the spirals at their tops. Give a little twist and the two chopsticks separate. Each chopstick now has one rounded side and one flat side along with a pretty spiral at the top. They look strangely graceful for a pair of eating implements. The lovely chopsticks were produced with a combination of traditional handcrafting skills and modern CNC milling. The blend of traditional and modern carries over to their appearance, with traditional materials complementing the elegant modern design. |
