Narrow Paris Apartment Revamped Into Cozy 4-Level Home Posted: 25 Feb 2014 08:00 AM PST An oddly-shaped Paris apartment was seemingly a lost cause. It was very tall, impossibly narrow and had no natural light other than some skylights in the ceiling. Clemence Eliard and Marc Sirvin, architects at Agence SML, tackled the challenge and created a cozy four-level home. According to the architects, the owner of the property acquired different parts of the residence over a number of years, which accounts for the unusual shape of the apartment. The plan for the apartment centered around turning it into a tower. Each level has its own specific function. The basement holds the bathroom, the second/main level houses the kitchen and living area, the third floor is home to a home office, and the bedroom is in a cozy little loft on the fourth level. To keep the tower apartment from feeling dark and cramped, the materials are light and airy. The office floor is made of a metal grid to allow light from the skylights to flow throughout the space. Alternating stairs keep the staircase footprint small, leaving more room for the home’s essential functions on each level. With only 269 square feet (25 square meters) with which to work, creative solutions like this one were important for maintaining the home’s functionality. The bedroom at the very top of the apartment is a comfortable nest that takes up nearly the entire loft space. A skylight is situated directly over the bed, providing a gentle natural alarm clock and a comfortable hideaway to unwind after a long day. |
Three-Ring Service: Stackable 3-in-1 Condiment Holder Posted: 24 Feb 2014 06:00 PM PST This interesting device bears a passing resemblance to a child’s ring-stacking toy, but it is far more sophisticated. The Stackable table set from Peleg Design combines three table condiments into one attractive, space-saving object. Central to the set and appearing as the bottom ring of the stack is a jar of olive oil. Its angled opening makes it easy to pour without spilling, and a rustic cork stopper contrasts with the very modern look of the rest of the set. The other two rings are salt and pepper shakers. Maybe having two separate shakers and a bottle just for olive oil doesn’t take up much space, but this brilliant design saves at least a bit of space while making a table look sophisticated and even a little playful. Swiveling Arm Acts as Water Supply for Shower and Sink Posted: 24 Feb 2014 02:00 PM PST This radical redesign of bathroom water features was thought up by Julia Kononenko. The 2 in 1 system does something that may be entirely new in bathroom design: it combines the shower head and sink faucet into one long, swiveling arm. In this revolutionary bathroom design, the shower and sink are right next to one another. When you need to use the sink, a long metal arm swivels down to faucet height. When you are showering, the arm swivels back up to shower head height. One fixture, two functions. As the arm moves between positions, a central switch automatically alters the water flow. When in shower head position, the water comes out like raindrops – but when in sink position, the water is dispensed through a central opening in one strong stream. The example built by the designer shows just how stylish and visually fascinating this bathroom would be. Of course, we would suggest adding shower doors or at least a curtain to keep the water from splashing everywhere, but the compelling design deserves appreciation for its unique aesthetic and functionality.
