Sometimes, the traffic noises, television, bright lights and frenetic activity of the outside world gets to be too much, and you just want to close yourself up in a dark, cozy space to get away from it all. Perhaps a giant skull isn’t the most relaxing and comforting shape imaginable for that space, but in this case, it’s an apt metaphor for escaping into your own mind.

The Sensory Deprivation Skull by Dutch design firm Atelier Van Lieshout features two large doors that open out to reveal an ergonomically curved, sheepskin-lined space. Shutting out the distractions of the surrounding environment, it offers a peaceful getaway for napping or daydreaming.

The design firm calls the object purely sculptural, but it clearly has a valuable use. Just add a light, and you’ve got a handy reading nook. It takes a slightly less extreme approach to sensory deprivation than an object like the ridiculous-looking Ostrich Pillow, a cushioned head cover that blocks out stimuli so you can nap anywhere.

Brilliant Candle Holder Keeps the Flame Burning All Night

There are thousands of candle holders out there, but there probably aren’t any like Odnosvechnik. Russian designer Yaroslav Misonzhnikov based the design on a traditional candle holder found in Yakutian homes.

The candle holder has a channel and three small notches in its marble base. The candle sits on a small wooden platform with a peg that protrudes from the central channel.

When you light the candle, it naturally gets smaller as it burns. But the Odnosvechnik lets you keep the flame at the same level all night by moving the wooden platform up as it burns down.

The simple design is rather brilliant in its execution. Similar tall candle holders make it difficult to light the candle and keep it from going out as it burns down, but with one intelligent tweak the Odnosvechnik design keeps the light burning at maximum brightness all night.
