Folding Geometric Floor Mat Enables Semi-Private Napping Posted: 23 May 2014 08:00 AM PDT Anyone who has ever been stuck at an airport overnight has likely wished for a private, comfortable space to catch some shut-eye in the midst of all the chaos. A mat that folds up entirely flat but can be manipulated into all sorts of different shapes offers just that. The RESMO by Chien-Hui Ko is a piece of portable folding furniture designed specifically for ‘camping involuntarily at the airport.’ Envisioned as a versatile, low-cost option that airport operators can offer to sleepy delayed passengers, the RESMO is easy to use, transport and store. A series of tabs and straps can transform it from a flat surface to a recliner in seconds, and a built-in head shield helps create some privacy in busy open spaces. Multiple units can be hooked together into benches or larger beds to create family zones in open areas designated by the airport. Made of a heavy-duty felt, it has soundproofing capabilities to help reduce background noise. The design won a Red Dot Award for Design Concept 2014. |
Tiny Books, Big Impact: Illustrator’s Hand-Bound Mini Tomes Posted: 22 May 2014 02:00 PM PDT Illustrator Evan Lorenzen has decided to record some of life’s biggest concepts in a very tiny format. His Little Book of Big Ideas is no larger than a safety pin, yet records the most important things that we as humans think about. The itty-bitty pages are all illustrated by hand with simplified pictures. Each picture is the artist’s interpretation of the idea at hand: growth, war, love…they are all condensed into impossibly tiny drawings. Lorenzen’s books are hand-bound and, when closed, about the size of his thumbnail. The drawings are beautifully intricate in a way that most artists would never be able to replicate. The artist’s books may be little, but they pack a huge wallop in terms of artistic endeavors. See more of Lorenzen’s itty-bitty handmade books on his website or Tumblr. |
