Cute Home Office is a Peaceful Backyard Working Retreat Posted: 03 Jun 2014 08:00 AM PDT When homeowners in Savannah, Georgia needed some additional space to add an office to their home, they knew they couldn’t alter their historic house. Rather than renovating their home to add a room, they called ASUL to create a one-of-a-kind modular backyard addition. This 320 square foot structure sits in an otherwise-unused corner of the couple’s yard. It’s composed of a 16′ X 20′ interior and an 8′ X 20′ cantilevered, covered deck. Huge glazed windows on the north and south sides let in plenty of natural light to create a work environment that is at once stimulating and comfortable. The little structure’s arrangement on stilts makes it cute, but the higher elevation wasn’t a conscious design choice. When conducting a feasibility study for the structure, ASUL found that the yard was within a FEMA-regulated flood zone. Thanks to the modular nature of ASUL’s structures, they were easily able to elevate the small home office. The elevation works well for the structure, giving it a fun, backyard-fort type feeling. |
Incredible Swimming Pool Hides Under a Retractable Lawn Posted: 02 Jun 2014 06:00 PM PDT As creative swimming pools go, hidden pools are among the most magnificent. But this one seriously takes the cake. It is a complete underground swimming pool masquerading as a normal backyard lawn. There isn’t any information included with the video posted on YouTube in May of 2014, but the short video kind of speaks for itself. It begins with a regular lawn which then crazily retracts under the yard’s back deck. The pool in the video appears to be real, but we aren’t sure about the grass on top of the sliding pool top. Either way, if you’re thinking of getting us a thank-you gift for showing you awesome home-related stuff, this is at the top of our list. |
Gorgeous Aged Wood Flooring is Actually Easy Care Ceramic Posted: 02 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT The look of aged wood in a home – whether it’s on the floors or walls – can give a kind of sophisticated rustic personality to the space. But, as anyone with hardwood floors knows, taking care of wood is hard work. Italian manufacturer Flaviker has a brilliant line of ceramic tiles that look just like real wood. The Dakota line is meant to look like aged alder wood. The floor planks are remarkably realistic, even featuring wormwood holes, knots, and scratches. The difference is that the Dakota planks are smooth, easier to clean, and won’t suffer nearly as much as real wood when you decide to drag the sofa from one end of the living room to the other. Flaviker’s tiles also allow a natural wood look in places that real wood simply couldn’t go. The tiles are waterproof so they can line a shower or act as a sink backsplash without warping and rotting. Until you get up very close to the tiles, it is nearly impossible to tell that they aren’t real wood. They are realistic enough to look charmingly rustic, but they are fuss-free and easy to maintain – a quality that most homeowners would take over real wood any day. |
