Nintendo Wii U Update Introduces “Quick Start” Menu Posted: 09 Jun 2014 07:00 AM PDT The newest system update for the Wii U gets players into the game as fast as ever.
Speed, much like emphasis of Mario Kart 8, is the main thrust behind the latest system update for the Nintendo Wii U. Update version 5.00 features the rather convenient "quick start" menu that allows users to get right into their favorite games, minus the waiting time that comes with booting-up the Wii U's operating system. The "quick start" menu also keeps track of what recent games/apps you've used so that the whole process really shaves off the time between you and, say, getting back into Mario Kart 8 to work on shaving off your race track time (I know, I know, too much Mario Kart on the brain). Take a look at the quick start menu in action. As a generation that's accustomed to the instant-touch lifestyle that comes with our modern electronics, your iPads and such, this is a smart move on Nintendo behalf. Of course, that's not all Update 5.00 brings with it: automatic downloading and installing of future system updates, a new kind of notification system on the Wii U GamePad controller that alerts patrons of status updates even when the main console is turned off, and most importantly of all, those awesome system stability tweaks. The latest Wii U update is available now, as is Mario Kart 8. But I'm sure you already know that through my heavy, probably unbearable name dropping of it (it’s well deserved though!). Be social! Google Glass To Get Line of Diane von Furstenberg Frames Posted: 09 Jun 2014 05:00 AM PDT With Google looking to establish Google Glass as a hi-tech fashion accessory, the search engine giant is teaming up with fashion brand Diane von Furstenberg.
According to many of those who are skeptic about Google Glass, Google's upcoming hi-tech eyewear device, "Glass is a gimmick", but according to fashion powerhouse Diane von Furstenberg, "technology is your best accessory". Unfortunately for those who aren't so interested in Google's wearable project, DVF wins this battle between the two opinions, with Google using her words to explain the brand new partnership between the clothing brand and themselves as they look to launch a line of Google Glass DVF frames and shades. As Google explains in a recent post on their Google Plus profile (where else),
With the DVF | Made For Glass collection, Google will make several instances of high fashion Google Glass frames available to those looking to wear the augmented reality specs with style. There will be five new frames for buyers to choose from and for those who are looking to wear their Google Glass device in the sunniest of weather, there are also eight new styles of shades to choose from too. In order to get your hands on the frames, Google say that the collection will be available from June 23rd though if you're looking to walk into your favourite local clothes or gadget store to pick one up then unfortunately they'll only be available exclusively from either NET-A-PORTER or from Google's own website google.com/glass. It's unclear as to whether or not Google will sell the frames in more places if sales suggest that people would like to look as good as ever whilst wearing a pair of Google Glass but we'll keep you posted once we know more. Clear Electrodes Help You Say Goodbye to Cracked Smartphone Screens Posted: 08 Jun 2014 01:15 PM PDT The obvious reason why we buy cases for our smartphones and tablets is so that we can prevent physical damage to them, which most often results in cracked screens. Transparent electrodes might help us avoid that altogether. The problem with modern smartphone screens is represented by the transparent, conductive substance named ITO (indium tin oxide). Unfortunately, this substance is present in virtually every screen out there, from plasma tellies and LCD monitors to the cockpit windows of planes, and has some very serious downsides. First of all, it is very expensive, it’s not exactly an unlimited resource, and it breaks easily. Yu Zhu, an assistant professor of polymer science, detailed a new method of making unbreakable conductive screens in a study that appeared in American Chemical Society’s journal ACS Nano. The indium tin oxide has been replaced by the team lead by Zhu with a mesh of metal electrodes that has been placed between two layers of polymer. As Zhu explained, “We expect this film to emerge on the market as a true ITO competitor. The annoying problem of cracked smartphone screens may be solved once and for all with this flexible touchscreen.” The new type of flexible touchscreens solves all the problems that the ITO has: it’s cheap, unbreakable and it’s made from widely available materials. More than that, since it is flexible, it could be used in more than just smartphones and tablets. More precisely, it could be used in gigantic curved TVs and in wearables such as smartwatches and fitness tracking wrist bands. University of Akron graduate students Tianda He and Aozhen Xia, and Darrell Reneker, distinguished professor of polymer science at the same university, helped Zhu get to this point. Hopefully, the transparent electrodes will enter mass production soon, as there are plenty of iPhone users who are crying over their cracked displays. The flexible touchscreen has a few downsides, as well. Unlike glass, it scratches more easily and it feels cheaper. Still, there are plenty of people who would prefer a screen that scratches over one that cracks. Depending on the angle of the fall, the display can be shattered quite easily, and cases, while able to prevent such accidents, make the phone bulkier and heavier. In other words, a screen made of clear electrodes would help a lot. Be social!
