Retro Gaming Kicks: Converse X Super Mario Bros. Sneakers

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 07:00 AM PDT

Converse X Super Mario Bros. Sneakers image 1

A pair of Converse All Stars turned Super Mario All Stars – in the most awesome way ever.

I doubt wearing a pair of these sneaks will grant me the power to jump super high or shoot fireballs from my fingers, but at least I would be one sharp-looking dude (and I'll take it!).

Available in Japan come this August for ¥21,600 ( that's about $215 USD) – and sadly, oh so sadly, only in Japan – are these ridiculously cool Converse X Super Mario Bros. shoes, which are absolutely dripping from heel-to-toe with nostalgia of the classic 8-bit platformer on the NES.

Red or green, much like the colored suspenders Mario & Luigi each wear in the game, will be the two styles to choose from for these Super Mario-inspired “Chuck Taylors.” Each color variant with their own neat little trappings, like retro Mario or either Bowser appearing on the sneaker's tongue.

Shout-out to cutely altering Converse's trademark "All Star" logo into an invisiblity star on the side of these suede-looking bad boys. I love that particular touch, especially.

13 Best Harry Potter Jokes & Memes

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 06:00 AM PDT

Harry Potter is never truly out of our lives. It’s been seven years since the final book; three years since the final film. But J.K. Rowling keeps it alive, and so do the fans with memes and jokes that never seem to grow old, among other ways making Harry Potter timeless.

So with Rowling pulling off a little treat, releasing a Harry Potter short in the form of a newspaper report by Rita Skeeter on the Quidditch World Cup, it’s a good opportunity to remind everyone just how good Harry Potter memes and puns can be.

Tango PC, a portable desktop PC (wait, what?!)

Posted: 10 Jul 2014 05:00 AM PDT

tango-pc-1

There is a very distinct difference in performance when you compare desktops and laptops, but the Tango PC team mean to shorten this gap.

The Tango team come from an incredibly succesful campaign at Indiegogo where they managed to get enough funds to turn the Tango PC dream into a reality. Now, they’ve moved over to Kickstarter where they hope to raise the remaining funds to give it all the specifications they want, but what is a Tango PC? Well, we’re talking of an ultraportable PC unit meant to do high-performance tasks, including gaming.

The Tango is lightweight, but manages to cram desktop components in the size of an iPhone. The specs are an AMD A6-5200 2 GHz quad-core processor, DDR3 RAM (from 2-8GB), SSD hard drive (from 32GB-1TB or higher), 3x USB 2.0 ports, 1x USB 3.0 port, 1x HDMI port, headphone jack and internal Wi-Fi. It can run either Windows 7 or 8, but it’s not restricted to that, so it could be the perfect candidate to become your own personal Steam Machine should you so desire it.

The miniature PC includes a docking station, and if you were to get more than one, you could spread them between the places you work at (home, office, and so on), and transport the Tango itself without any worries. These docking stations are only $99 a piece, and it’s these that could replace the desktop computers themselves.

The cycle of Windows 7 (and several other Microsoft products!) is ending

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 07:00 AM PDT

Windows 7

Microsoft has warned their userbase that their support cycle for Windows 7 and several other products will soon be coming to an end.

Microsoft calls “mainstream support” the period of 5 years after the launch of any given product, where they constantly provide patches, security updates and fixes for their products. Being in the mainstream support category means that all updates are free, but after this period ends, a product enters the extended support phase, where it’s only the security fixes which are free, with the rest requiring special licensing. What is happening to Windows 7 is that it will soon join the second category, that means, no more fixes or patches, leaving users to manage on their own if they still desire to not upgrade.

Windows 7′s cycle ends specifically on January 13th, but that’s not all,  as Windows Server 2008 and Windows Storage Sever 2008 are also ending. So does support for Dynamics C5 2010, NAV 2009 and NAV 2009 R2l. Given how widely used Windows 7 is, it’s almost expected of Microsoft to extend the life of the product, but if that is to happen, Microsoft has given no indication yet.

Samsung’s Gear VR Headset Could See the Light of Day at IFA 2014

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 06:30 AM PDT

Samsung Gear VR Headset 01

The virtual reality headset developed by Samsung is closer to becoming a reality. According to Sammobile, who have also gotten their mittens on photos of GEAR VR, the device will be launched at IFA 2014.

Gear VR, as Samsung’s product is rumoredly going to be called, will function in a manner that makes it closer to Google Cardboard, rather than to Oculus Rift. Samsung’s VR headset will only be compatible with Galaxy smartphones (most probably only flagships such as S5 or Note 3), so the South Korean company has a precise target audience in mind. On top of that, this design enables Samsung to create a VR headset that doesn’t have an exorbitant price.

Galaxy smartphones will connect to Gear VR via USB 3.0. The necessity for a high-speed connection rose from high bitrate of the material that’s projected in the headset. The virtual reality effect is achieved with the help of the accelerometer, gyroscope and processing power included in the smartphone. Basically, the headset relies on the smartphone to do the head-tracking required for the VR effect.

If the above picture is real, it means that Samsung has also decided on how to call its VR headset. It’s good to see that they went for a simple name that’s incredibly easy to memorize.

Oculus currently reigns supreme in the world of VR headsets (which frankly, doesn’t really have that many members), and Samsung somehow admitted that it couldn’t have possibly developed Gear VR from the ground up, alone. More precisely, the Korean company collaborated with Oculus VR (or, in other words, with Facebook) in order to create the software for Gear VR. As far as the hardware is concerned, Samsung took the matter into its own hands, and to be honest, the headset doesn’t look bad at all.

As IFA 2014 takes place as usual, in Berlin, from September 5 to 10, we’ll have to wait till then to see if the above photos are real, and if Samsung’s device represents a threat to Facebook’s Oculus and Sony’s Morpheus VR headsets. Another star that Samsung might launch at IFA 2014 is the Galaxy Note 4, which should also work with Gear VR. The problem is that the Note phablets are made for productivity, while Gear VR is clearly built with gamers in mind, so it will be interesting to see the reaction of past and future Note users.
