The Simpsons Wine: guess we don’t need Moe anymore

Posted: 23 Jul 2014 10:18 AM PDT

Simpsons Wine 1

Don’t be fooled by the bad rep drinking yellow liquid has. This is the real deal, actual (and good) wine packed in Simpsons themed bottles.

This is a creation of Constantin Bolimond, a pair of beautiful wine bottles themed after Homer and Marge Simpson, the titular couple of The Simpsons.

The design is inspired by Pieter Mondrian’s art and, obviously, by the SImpsons TV show that everyone knows and loves.

These bottles are a concept, and can’t be bought anywhere as of now… but after seeing these, don’t you wish you could?

Wii U Update Enables System Transfer & Wii Remote eShop Browsing

Posted: 23 Jul 2014 07:00 AM PDT

Wii U system transfer GamePad image

The latest update for Nintendo’s Wii U OS is now live, giving users the options of system transfers and eShop navigation with almost any Nintendo controller.

It might not be the perfect solution for the problem (and I'll get to why in a sec), but the latest Wii U update (version 5.1.0 U) finally allow users to move their Wii U-related content, digital software and tied data, from one console to the other.

The "Wii U to Wii U System Transfer" works just as its 3DS System Transfer counterpart, in fact – and that's exactly where the "might not be a perfect solution" problem therein lies. For the Wii U data transfer to work, both systems, the one you currently own and the new you're about to pour your precious game data into, must be running at the same time.

Apparently, and keep with me here, the Wii U GamePads of both consoles are necessary in this whole process, with a special confirmation code needing to be sent wirelessly between the two systems by pointing each GamePad directly at each other. Sounds crazy, huh? Not to Nintendo, who thankfully provided an image of this exact operation (…uh, thanks?).

Without a proper way to allow its users to sign out of one's Nintendo Network ID on one system and then log on to another to gain access to their associated data – like, say, everyone else who handles digital rights management – this will just be the strange hoops its customers will have to go through. But hey, it's nice that Nintendo is acquiescing to at least this level, I suppose.

Lastly in this new system update, besides the much appreciated system stability fixes, the entirety of the eShop can now be browsed with almost any Nintendo controller on hand, be it Wii Remote, Wii U Pro Controller, or Classic Controller. Previously, only the Wii U GamePad could be used to gain access to Nintendo’s digital storefront.

Apple And IBM Are Teaming Up to Tackle Enterprise Mobility

Posted: 23 Jul 2014 05:00 AM PDT

apple-ibm

Apple and IBM used to be bitter rivals, but the to companies just formed a new partnership that may change the face of enterprise mobility.

Anyone that knows much about Apple or Steve Jobs knows that Apple and IBM have never been best friends.  The two companies were fierce competitors in the 80s, when they were the two front runners in the PC industry.  The animosity extended beyond marketplace competition, too.  Steve Jobs was very vocal about his dislike of IBM, although, he didn’t always need words to express his feelings on the matter.

Overt demonstrations of this nature weren’t just personal, either.  Apple’s targeting of IBM also extended into official marketing.  Apple has always been very combative in its advertising, and one of the most famous Apple commercials targeted IBM directly, and even compared the competing company to an Orwellian Big Brother.”

Although, over the years, the relationship between the two companies has lost a lot of the animosity, but that is mostly attributed to the fact that they don’t directly compete as much as they used to.  IBM sold its notebook division to Lenovo and focused much more on enterprise services, while Apple went on to dominate the consumer market.

In fact, the role of each company in the industry has transformed to the point where they actually have a lot to offer each other.  IBM sells and supports enterprise equipment and services and Apple devices are used in 90% of enterprise, so the partnership only makes sense.

Some may say that Steve Jobs would be rolling in his grave about now (see above photo), but Jobs might have even seen this coming.  Jobs once described the difference between Apple and IBM by saying

IBM has the best process people in the world. They just forgot about the content. And that happened a little bit at Apple, too. We had a lot of people who were great at management process. They just didn't have a clue about the content. In my career, I found that the best people are the ones that really understand the content.

The same is very true today.  IBM has found massive success in the enterprise due to a focus on process.  IBM is a world leader in business process management, data storage and security, and enterprise support for both hardware and software.  The company has basically established itself as a go-to one stop shop for anything enterprise IT related.

Meanwhile, Apple has focused almost solely on the consumer and consumer content, and excelled at it.  Apple is a major leader for applications and hardware, but very few of these services target any large scale deployment.  Apple IDs, for example, are a personal ID with no corporate alternative, making enterprise IT management of Apple devices somewhat troublesome.  Despite the wide adoption of Apple devices in Enterprise, the devices have surprisingly little to offer most companies.

This partnership brings together the best of both worlds of both the “processes” and the “content” that Steve Jobs mentioned as components of success.  Although many corporations may not start seeing the benefits of this partnership for many months, it is a massive pairing that will benefit both companies as well as their customers.

Xiaomi Mi 4 and Mi Band Wearable, or How to Use Tech for World Domination

Posted: 22 Jul 2014 01:54 PM PDT

Xiaomi Mi4

Being called the “Apple of Asia” wasn’t enough for Xiaomi, and this Chinese company went to great lengths to prove that they’re even better than that. Xiaomi Mi 4 and the Mi Band wearable are the latest proofs of that.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun unveiled at a press-conference in Beijing the company’s latest flagship smartphone and its debut in the world of wearable tech. Xiaomi Mi 4, the Chinese manufacturer’s latest phone, features a metal back that could make some people think of the iPhone, but all similarities stop there.

Lei revealed his confidence that the Xiaomi Mi4 is superior to Apple’s smartphone: “Our product really is better than the iPhone. Even our white color is whiter!” Of course, his claim is backed not only by the ridiculously low price of only $320 (less than half than the $700 price tag of the iPhone in China), but also by the device’s performance.

This company made a habit from creating powerful devices, the Mi Pad tablet, which is powered by Nvidia’s Tegra K1 SoC, being one of the latest such examples. Xiaomi Mi4, on the other hand, is powered by Qualcomm’s 2.5 Ghz Snapdragon 801 CPU. On top of that, the flagship is equipped with a 5-inch FHD display, 3GB of RAM, an 8 MP front-facing camera and a 13 MP rear-facing one. In terms of storage capacity, Xiaomi Mi 4 will come either with 16GB or 64GB of internal memory. Everything is powered by a 3,080 mAh battery that should be more than enough for a work day.

Mi Band, the other piece unveiled at Xiaomi’s most recent press conference, is a wearable that while doesn’t impress with its functionality, it does so with its design. This fitness and sleep tracker is water-resistant (being IP67 certified), and has 30-day standby power, which is quite a lot in terms of wearable battery life.

Unlike typical sleep trackers, the Mi Band will also act as a smart sleep cycle alarm. In other words, it will wake you up when you’re the most invigorated. This piece of wearable tech will also enable you to unlock your smartphone without a password, and I tend to believe that it will work with all Android phones, not just with Xiaomi’s. Best of all, the Mi Band will be around $13, a fraction of the price of items made by more “reputable” manufacturers.

Tegra K1-Powered Shield Tablet Expands Nvidia’s Gaming Console Line

Posted: 22 Jul 2014 01:00 PM PDT

nVidia Shield Tablet

Nvidia’s new Android gaming console has finally been confirmed. The Shield Tablet, as it is called, is meant to exhibit never-seen-before performance in gaming, mostly due to the Tegra K1 SoC that powers it.

Even though the original Shield was impressive on its own, it was rather niched, both because of its form factor and price. The Shield Tablet, on the other hand, should appeal to more people, as its screen size makes it ideal for gaming. Most people assumed that Nvidia’s tablet would come with a detachable controller, but the graphics card manufacturer surprised us with another accessory. Those who would rather press physical buttons instead of tapping the display of the tablet have the Shield Wireless Controller at their disposal.

The 8-inch display of the Shield Tablet is flanked by (what I assume to be) stereo speakers. A screen of that size, paired with the Tegra K1 chip that Nvidia claims to be a lot faster than the Tegra 4 that powered the Nvidia Shield, turns gaming into a very enjoyable experience. It’s a bit weird, though, that Nvidia decided to go for a 1920×1200 resolution instead of 1920×1080.

Nvidia’s TegraZone has been renamed in order to accommodate what is now a family of products. Now known as the Shield Hub, it provides the interface necessary for gaming. As for the games that people can play on the Shield Tablet, there are plenty of options, both among Android titles and games that are streamed from PCs running particular models of Nvidia graphics cards. The technology that enables this is intuitively called GameStream, but Nvidia’s Grid cloud will also be tested out.

The Shield Wireless Controller will enable gamers to control the Shield Tablet over Wi-Fi. It sports headphone and microphone jacks that facilitate communication while gaming. On top of that the Shield Controller can be used for media playback and Google voice commands.

The Nvidia Shield Tablet and Shield Wireless Controller will be launched on July 29, but anyone interested in these can already place a pre-order at select retailers. Depending on the storage capacity and on whether the tablet has LTE support or not, the price will range between $299 and $399. The Shield Wireless controller, on the other hand, will cost $59.
