OS X Yosemite is out, is free, and is great

The latest OS X, Yosemite, is out already and users can download it for free at the Mac store. Join us and learn what’s new.

Apple’s most recent OS X was made available a few hours ago at the Mac App Store for free. It had been announced at WWDC 2014 with a new, improved look and significant upgrades, as well as improved compatibility with iOS, which made it seem like we were in for a real, fantastic upgrade. As nearly a million beta users had been saying for a while, we’re happy to report this is true indeed. Yosemite (the first named after a geographic location instead of a feline) has been brought to the masses so everyone can weigh in on it, and now is here to stay.

Some of our favorite features are the ones that have to do with iOS integration: users are now able to receive phone calls, share files via AirDrop and work seamlessly between their iPhones, iPads and computers. Furthermore, with the upcoming patch scheduled for Monday, users will even be able to send and receive text and multimedia messages via the Messages app.

Yosemite is sort of an all-terrain, as it runs on any iMac released after 2007 to present, which is a pretty huge window that ensures that most of the userbase gets to run it. Have some of you been running it already? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

7 Million Dropbox Accounts Compromised, Data Being Posted Online

Posted: 17 Oct 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Dropbox on iPhone

Although the company denies a hack, over 7 million Dropbox accounts have reportedly been compromised with the details being released online.

Cloud technology is a wondrous, fantastical thing. Used on our phones to automatically sync photos, videos and the like to all of our devices and often used so that entire teams can collaborate no matter their location, the cloud’s benefits are far and wide. Yet, like people being told that the Earth was round or those witnessing the marvels of electricity for the first time, there are more than a handful who have run screaming in fear. The recent iCloud hack (hundreds of celebrity nudes were leaked) cast doubt over cloud security and now with Dropbox, one of the biggest cloud services, also reportedly compromised, those fears may have just been validated.

The suggestion of a Dropbox hack comes after someone took to pastebin and posted a document containing 400 Dropbox usernames and passwords. While that’s a small number, the poster claims that this is just the tiniest portion of approximately 7 million account details. The same person has even been asking for Bitcoin donations in order for them to release more info and troublingly, they seem to have gotten them.

Yet, despite all this worrying talk of hacked accounts, Dropbox fervently denies that they have been hacked. In a statement a Dropbox spokesperson explained,

“These usernames and passwords were unfortunately stolen from other services and used in attempts to log in to Dropbox accounts. We’d previously detected these attacks and the vast majority of the passwords posted have been expired for some time now. All other remaining passwords have been expired as well.”

While they say that these passwords are expired, this will hardly be a salve to those concerned that the hacks took place in the first place. But, the company also reminds people that Dropbox two-step login verification is available so just to be on the safe side it’s highly recommended that you head over to the site and enable that now.

Dynamic Chair Replaces the Mouse with Your Body

Posted: 16 Oct 2014 01:35 PM PDT

Bionic Chair

Now that there are all sorts of mindblowing computers out there, maybe it’s time to bring office furniture into discussion. More precisely, the chair you sit in while using the computer.

What if, through some wicked engineering, the chair would enable your body to be used as a mouse? Starting from idea that sitting still in a chair all day long (or at least 8 hours) is bad for your health, Govert Flint, a recent graduate of Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands created the Dynamic Chair, a seat that motivates you to keep moving all the time. Either that, or the pointer on the screen won’t move at all.

Flint, who enjoys dancing quite a lot, thought of ways to integrate fluid movement patterns into the design of this bionic chair: “It started with my questions about why I like to dance so much, and how it was possible I couldn’t enjoy my work as an architect in an office environment.”

The designer is well aware of the health problems caused by conventional chairs: “Standing desks damage cartilage similarly to sitting. While we sit, we don’t massage our cartilage. Even in our sleep, our body needs to move the joints and therefore has frequent motions.”

At the moment, the bionic chair is but a prototype, but I really hope that Flint will get the necessary support for turning this into a mass-produced item, regardless of how expensive it will get. This product achieves something that not many chairs are capable of: making the user happy, not just fit.

Of course, Flint also knows that there are still a lot of improvements that could be made: “It gets quite close to a comfortable sensation, but will need serious development before someone can work in it for a full day. But many people say that it feels much better than how it looks.”

Don’t expect to use such a chair for gaming, though! The pointer’s movement isn’t that fluid, for the time being, not to mention that a simple RTS or MMORPG game could exhaust the player in just a few minutes.

“At the moment it feels like playing a game to click on an item,” pointed out Flint. “The aim is to make a computer interface that allows people to work with typing, graphics, editing software, browsing and music making for daily use, without having the feeling it goes against their intuition.”

This exercise in design has a simple, but beautiful goal: “My quest is to find an integration of movement, function, and emotions.”

Apple’s Newest iMac Sports the 1st 5K Display Ever

Posted: 16 Oct 2014 12:59 PM PDT

27-inch iMac Display 5K resolution

For once, Apple has done something truly revolutionary, in a department where we don’t see changes that often. The 4K resolution hasn’t even become a standard, yet, and the Cupertino company has already launched an iMac with a 5K display.

The 5K resolution wasn’t even a thing before Apple unveiled the new generation of iMac desktop computers. Retina displays, which are characterized by extremely high resolutions, represent Apple’s own version of anti-aliasing. With the new 5,120 x 2,880, which is five times the number of pixels of a 1080p display, the new iMac screen sets a new standard. Like it or not, Apple’s competitors will have a hard time beating this.

I generally think that Cupertino doesn’t bring anything new to the table, as its mobile devices are outperformed by the competition even before being launched. However, in the case of the new iMac display, I couldn’t possibly say that it doesn’t represent an innovation.

Another innovation is represented by the fact that the new 5K Retina Display requires less energy than the previous generation, despite being better.

Of course, to make sure that everything is displayed smoothly, Apple also upgraded the CPU and the GPU. There are multiple configuration options, as well, people being able to choose between a 3.5GHz Intel Core i5 quad-core and a Core i7 CPU running at 4GHz. The company has ditched Nvidia GPUs and went for AMD Radeon R9 M290X and M295X GPUs, which is a bit peculiar, as Nvidia’s 970M and 980M GPUs surpass these, both in terms of performance and energy consumption.

Apple has made changes in other departments, as well, if not in terms of size, then in terms of performance. For example, the 1TB HDD that used to come with non-Retina iMacs has been replaced with a 1TB Fusion Drive, which is a lot faster than conventional drives, as it combines a HDD with a NAND flash drive.

Anyone wanting to buy the new iMac with Retina Display will have to get $2,500 out of their pockets. For the sake of comparison, Dell’s upcoming UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K Monitor will sell for $2,499, despite not including a computer inside it. That means that for just one dollar you can get 1TB of storage, a powerful CPU and a GPU that can handle with no problem any of today’s games.
