Redditors Now Have Their Own Crowdfunding Platform, RedditMade Posted: 29 Oct 2014 10:08 AM PDT If you’re a Reddit user, have a unique idea for a design or product, but think that Kickstarter, Indiegogo and CrowdSupply are not really up your alley, then Reddit’s newly-launched crowdfunding platorm might be just the thing for you. RedditMade, as this platform is called, is just like any other crowdfunding site out there. Or is it? At a first glance, it may seem so, but then people have to remember one essential aspect: Reddit has around 170 million unique visitors per month. In other words, any crowdfunding project posted on RedditMade has great chances of spreading like fire to its immense user base. Redditor highshelfofsteam announced the launch of the RedditMade crowdfunding platform a few hours ago, saying that the site will enable subreddits to create personalized merchandise for their communities. Another unique aspect is that Redditors will get a lot of support in finding sourcing partners for their projects: “Whatever you want to make, we’ll connect you to our network of quality sourcing partners for a variety of products and walk you through every step of the process so your community can celebrate your connection and show off your pride without all the work.” “Redditmade is a new place to turn the best designs and products by the community into reality. Redditmade gives you the flexibility to create almost anything you want, easily raise money, and support causes you care about. It’s also a great way for others to find awesome new products they’ll love and support other redditors while knowing their information and money will always be secure,” added the Redditor in the announcement. For now, the crowdfunding site only features a couple of projects, including stickers and headphones, but the fact that the entire business will explode in the next coming days is beyond doubt. Each project posted on RedditMade will have a section for comments and feedback. Other than that, the site resembles Kickstarter and Indiegogo a bit, in that the funding goal, the money meter and the visual content are displayed in a similar manner. On other crowdfunding sites, companies have a bit of flexibility in choosing the deadline of the project, whereas on RedditMade, this deadline is set for 30 days. I’m curious how many projects will get funded and if any crowdfunding records will be established anytime soon. Be social! Oppo R5 Is the Slimmest Smartphone Yet, But Not for Long Posted: 29 Oct 2014 09:24 AM PDT At 4.85mm thick, Oppo R5 is the official record holder for the world’s slimmest smartphone. Rumor has it that this record will be broken again very soon by another Chinese company that wants to blow everyone’s minds with a 4mm-thick device. There is a limit smartphone and tablet manufacturers won’t be able to cross, though, as it’s impossible for such devices to get paper-thin. Considering the components that need to be crammed in there, it’s very unlikely that the smartphones will get slimmer than say 3mm. Batteries and chips can only be that thin, after all! For the time being, Oppo R5 takes home the title of the world’s thinnest phone, and as though that wasn’t enough, it is also the company’s first 64-bit device. Topping the scale at 155 grams, the R5 measures 148.9 x 74.5 x 4.85mm, and all of this in a 3D-welded aluminum alloy frame. Its technical specs are great, but not exactly revolutionary, as the smartphone only comes with an octa-core Cortex-A53 CPU clocked at 1.5GHz, along with an Adreno 405 GPU and 2GB RAM. While not mindblowing, these specs make sure you’ll be able to run any app flawlessly on the 5.2″ FullHD AMOLED touschreen display. Unlike the N3, which comes with a single motorized camera that switches from back to front in two shakes of a lamb’s tail, the R5 sports two of them. The one for selfies has 5MP, while the rear-facing camera sports a 13MP Sony IMX214 sensor and an f/2.0 aperture. The back camera is fairly potent, being able to record 2160p video at 30fps and 1080p@60fps, as well as a 120fps slow-motion mode (at 720p). As far as the battery is concerned, the Oppo R5 comes with a 2,000mAh Li-Polymer one that’ll charge rapidly thanks to the VOOC mini rapid charge tech support. In terms of connectivity, the world’s slimmest smartphone packs everything, up to LTE. The only thing it’s missing is a 3.5mm jack, since this would’ve made the device bulkier, so you’ll have to stick to Bluetooth headphones. Here’s a video showing a timeline of the world’s slimmest phones, from Motorola V3 Razr to Oppo R5. The only problem I have with this clip is that it has been uploaded in glorious 340p, a resolution that should have been dead, buried and forgotten by now.
As mentioned before, some other Chinese company (namely VIVO) is rumored to launch a 4mm smartphone in the near future, so Oppo’s record won’t stand for too long. Be social! ChronodeVFD, the Steampunk Watch: who needs smart when you got steam? Posted: 29 Oct 2014 06:00 AM PDT Steampunk is back, and it never should’ve left! This is a Steampunk VFD wristwatch, with fantastic retro looks and modern usability Between the Nexus and iPhones, PS4 and Xbox Ones and stuff, we got a whole new batch of gadgets, yet the steampunk mods are lacking. What happened? We used to get them so often… because we are still not ready to move on, here’s a new creation called ChronodeVFD. It’s a steampunk VFD wristwatch made by J. M. De Cristofaro, better known as "johngineer". His blog even details the materials and building process so you can recreate your own, which sounds like a fantastic plan for a slow weekend. B4RM4N Smart Cocktail Shaker is the ultimate cocktail tool Posted: 29 Oct 2014 05:00 AM PDT Love drinks but have a hard time preparing them? You don’t have to fret over it anymore, technology comes to the rescue once again. Cocktails are great, and we all enjoy them, but there’s a difference between liking and knowing how to prepare something. B4RM4N is a gadget that will attempt to ensure your cocktails are pure quality. By pairing with a smartphone via Bluetooth and a companion app, B4RM4N taps into a library of cocktail and helps with preparing them every step of the way. Users need only to pour the drinks until the app changes the color of the LED on the cocktail shaker, and that’s that. B4RM4N is currently being Kickstarted, but users can get their hands on it already for $89. Doesn’t sound bad at all, especially if you’re serious about becoming the next cocktail hero. Alienware Graphics Amplifier Brings Desktop Quality Gaming to Notebooks Posted: 28 Oct 2014 12:59 PM PDT Alienware 13 just became world’s first future-proof laptop, as its add-on enables gamers to use any desktop graphics to play games on it. Until now, gaming laptops couldn’t even be compared to their desktop counterparts. Some of them come with quite powerful graphics cards, but throwing such a piece of hardware in a compact notebook case meant that, for one, the temperature would go up and, as a consequence, increase the risk of GPU throttling. Alienware (which in case you don’t remember, is a subsidiary of Dell specialized in gaming notebooks and desktops) puts an end to all of these problems with the Graphics Amplifier. At a first glance, this gimmick seems nothing more than an enclosure for a 460-watt PSU and a PCI Express x16 slot. The magic actually happens when equipping the Alienware Graphics Amplifier with any full-length dual-width video card (the device isn’t picky at all, being compatible even with Nvidia GTX 980 or Radeon HD R9 295X2), and connecting it to the Alienware 13 gaming laptop. The Graphics Amplifier also doubles as a USB hub, as it comes with 4 USB 3.0 ports, even though I doubt anyone will use it primarily for that. Think of it as a bonus from the manufacturer. The box connects to a proprietary port on the laptop through a proprietary cable. And this is the moment you realize that the Alienware Graphics Amplifier only works with Alienware laptops. I guess it wouldn’t have been fair for this company to use an open standard that made the device compatible with any other laptop you can think of. For the time being, only the 13″ version can be used in tandem with the Amplifier, but it’s a safe bet that future Alienware notebooks will also feature this port. When connecting the Amplifier, it’s as if Alienware 13′s GPU (a GTX 860M) is by-passed altogether. For the internal GPU to work again, you need to unplug the box and reset the laptop. Needless to say, the performance improvements are nothing short of spectacular when connecting an AMD Radeon 290X to the Alienware 13. Below is a comparison between the laptop used with and without the magic box. The Alienware Graphics Amplifier costs $299, which might seem like a lot, but think about it for a minute. You won’t have to change your notebook anytime soon just because the latest games aren’t looking that great on it. Just plug a new graphics card in and game on!
