BurntPixels Pac-Man Light Box image 1

Eat away the dark in your home with this Pac-Man light box.

When it comes to fine-looking ornaments of the geeky persuasion, let Christina's Etsy store BurntPixel fill that dark corner of your heart with one of her handcrafted light boxes. One of her newest lamps available is based on Japanese video game publisher Namco’s legendary arcade ghost eater, Pac-Man, and looks absolutely smashing.

Crafted from of laser-cut MDF, the Pac-Man light box is a 6 inch gloss black cube, featuring Pac-Man himself and his rainbow-colored specter pals. In a creative twist, the colors shining from the light box don't emit from the light source – in this case is just a simple AAA battery-powered LED – but from the cut-outs themselves.

The overall effect is a simple, echoing illumination that feels almost similar to the classic 1980 game in motion. Thankfully, you won’t be needing an endless amount of quarters to enjoy it.

Right now you can purchase the Pac-Man light box from BurntPixels, a wonderful addition to a gaming den or bedroom, for the starting unassembled price of $50.00 USD; Add five more dollars to that price if you wish for full assembly and added shipping costs.

Posted: 07 Oct 2014 06:00 AM PDT

Gamma Snacks

Not that we need any more advertising and brand placing in our lives, but this idea of using Marvel Superheroes (and one lovable movie villain) like Iron Man, Thor, Captain American, Loki, Hulk, Groot and Deadpool on cereals boxes is incredibly cool.

The combination of Bamboota and Elliot Fernandez brought together this wonderful project, taking a very needed spin on the boxes of morning cereals.

Iron Man (Iron Bran)

Comes along with Pepper Potts, the mandarin, a lot of money and also a potential drinking problem, not to mention the Nick Fury eye patch.

Loki (Loki Charms)

Comes along with a depress Thor and also one awesome staff among other things. And speaking of his bashing brother…

Thor (Honey Nut Thorrios)

Comes along with his Avenger friends, including the useless Black Widow and Hawkeye. Ther Mjolnir as well, if you’re worthy of picking it up.

Deadpool (Deadpools)

As expected from the Merc with a Mouth, this box comes with things that go Boom!

Hulk (Gamma Snacks)

If you get these gamma snacks, you’ll also receive a Loki with a black eye, one solemn Nick Fury and maybe Gamma radiation, which usually isn’t a good thing.

Captain America (Ameri-Crunch)

You’ll be filled with Red, White and Blue emotions after biting your way through this.

Groot (Groot Loops)

How a well made film made a tree and a raccoon incredibly popular.

Mighty Mug, the unspillable coffee mug

Posted: 07 Oct 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Whether you love coffee or tea makes no difference: it’s dangerous to have a drink next to your computer or gadgets! That is, unless you own a Mighty Mug.

America favors coffee for breakfast, and although it’s a great call, the careless handling of the mug has put an end to many laptops, phones and diverse gadgets. Aware of the issue, the Mighty Mug team worked on a solution that aims to reduce accidents to zero by combining design and technology. The Mighty Mug uses what the company calls Smartgrip Technology, which makes the mug remain lightweight, but able to be pushed around, hit, and dragged without risk of it tipping over. You know, unless you want to.

The concept is very simple: the cup is made in such a way that it creates a vacuum seal when its laid down, without buttons, locks or anything: it just happens. So, as long as users put down the Mighty Mug on any flat, non-porous surface, it will stay there without going anywhere, without tipping, and completely safe.

The Mighty Mug has been doing great in the market since it came out in 2013, so now they’re introducing new models for different situations, and different quantities of glorious coffee.

HTC Nexus 9 Pays the FCC a Visit

Posted: 06 Oct 2014 12:29 PM PDT

HTC Nexus 9

About three weeks ago, pictures of what looked like a Nexus 9 keyboard accessory clearing the NCC were leaked on the Internet, and now we can take a look at the tablet itself, this time while passing through the FCC.

There were rumors even since February this year that Google would cooperate with HTC on a high-end tablet, but at that time no one knew exactly if it would be a Nexus 8 or a new Nexus 10. More recently, the mist was blown away and it became clear that it would be the Nexus 9 that will come from HTC’s hands. Considering that since the HTC Dream, the Taiwanese company and Mountain View haven’t collaborated on much, all these rumors were took with more than a grain of salt, but now it looks like HTC is again in Google’s graces.

Nexus 9, which will most likely be launched along the Nexus 6, this month, will be among the first devices to run Android L. It will presumably feature a 8.9-inch 2,048 × 1,440 display, a Tegra K1 processor, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, and 16GB or 32GB storage options.

Since the second generation Nexus 7 was also offered in the LTE variety, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were multiple versions of Nexus 9, differentiated by more than just the internal storage capacity.

The version that went through the FCC is model number 0P82100, which is believed to be the Wi-Fi-only variant. In that case, it’s a certainty that the 4G version will be released with a different model number, should HTC indeed consider making an LTE Nexus 9. Other than that, in the FCC picture the Android tablet seems to sport an aluminum body and front facing speakers. Will it be in fact a high-end tablet, or is it just an oversized Nexus 7? Either way, chances are that the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 are the last products to be launched by Google under this name, as the company practically ran out of numbers (well, there’s still the 8, and it wouldn’t make much sense using 1, 2, or 3) and going over ten would be awkward.

Fortunately for people who can’t stand Apple, Google made a habit from releasing really powerful devices at unbeatable prices. This year, however, Google faces some new competition, in the form of Chinese manufacturers such as Xiaomi, whose 7.9″ MiPad has similar specs, but a higher pixel density due to the slightly larger resolution on a smaller display. That one is currently priced around $289 for the 16GB version, so Google might have a hard time beating that.

Microsoft’s Stylus Is Aware of Its Position in Your Hand

Posted: 06 Oct 2014 11:58 AM PDT

Microsoft Buxton Hinckley Stylus

Styluses are a much appreciated aid when using photo editing apps on tablets, or on touchscreens, in general. They’re even great for gaming, so we can see why Microsoft decided to make digital pens so much better.

Bill Buxton and Microsoft Principal Researcher Ken Hinckley assembled a team with members of Microsoft Research (MSR), as well as researchers from Cornell University and the University of Manitoba, in order to create a unique stylus that diminishes the gap between humans and computers. The ultimate goal of this project was to increase the interaction between the digital pens and the touchscreens and to make sure that the hand’s dexterity is acknowledged and exploited by the stylus.

Buxton pointed out that “There’s a reason Picasso used a paintbrush instead of finger painting all the time, just as there’s a reason a dentist uses precise drills, which are basically just specialized styluses, as opposed to a chisel. The fingers and hands have this absolute dexterity, both alone, such as when you pinch and zoom on a touch screen, but also through tools that you hold in your hand. So when we think about a stylus, it’s just another long, skinny tool that we can do amazing things with.”

Sure, tapping on touchscreens has become something natural, especially for the newer generations, but it’s still the use of tools and instruments that makes us so good at what we are. When using Microsoft’s self-aware stylus, apps will be able to tell whether you’re holding it with your right or left hand, and whether it’s held as paintbrush or as a pencil. This is exactly what makes this digital pen extraordinary, as it is capable of adjusting its functionality depending on how you’re holding it.

Hinckley added: “Our goal was to factor out the interface and provide as simple an experience as possible. So throughout the process we kept asking ourselves, ‘how do we use this understanding of device grip and orientation to add new possibilities, but without drowning the user in more complexity?’”

Let’s just hope that Redmond doesn’t leave this as a concept and that it actually intends to implement the technology into a marketable product. It could come with future Surface Pro tablets, or it could be offered as an individual accessory for tablets. Considering Microsoft’s recent love for other operating systems, I wouldn’t mind if a version of this smart stylus compatible with Android was offered, that is, assuming that developers are willing to add the necessary code to assure the functionality of the device.
