New wireless charging technology reduces charge time by three Posted: 10 Dec 2014 06:00 AM PST Wireless charging technology has finally become viable, although not yet widespread as it’s rather slow. That’s where Freescale’s new gadget comes in. Most wireless charging gadgets today are great for charging smartphones and tablets overnight, but really fall short when we’re in a hurry and need charge fast. Most of them have a charge rate of 5 watts, which chip manufacturer Freescale claims they’ll be able to triple with their new charging unit. These chargers (which will release in early 2015) will recharge devices at a 15 Watts rate, effectively cutting charge time by three, getting our gadgets back to 100% in just a couple hours. In Dennis Cabrol’s words, who is Freescale's Director of Global Marketing and Business Development:
This new technology is already underways and it’s expected we’ll see the first consumer devices using it midway through 2015. Freescale has already mentioned their intention to keep researching, getting the wattage higher and charge times smaller, so this is only the beginning. Be social! Have the bloodiest Christmas of all with Game of Thrones Posted: 10 Dec 2014 04:00 AM PST Traditionally, your tree should already be up, but in case it isn’t, you may decorate it with these and the insides of everyone you love. This is a complete Game of Thrones theme for the season! The ThinkGeek crowd came up with a fantastic set of christmas ornaments and lights to decorate our traditional trees with a geeky edge. And, because winter is coming, these are a perfect fit for any nerdy home still in need of getting into the holiday spirit. Both of these sets are official licensed products based on the hit series by HBO Game of Thrones, and each come with sigils of the different houses of Westeros. The ornaments come in several variations featuring the logos of houses Baratheon, Lannister, Stark, or Targaryen, and include the goldtone hanging chain. They cost $9.99 USD each. On the other end, the sigils string lights feature 10 lights: 2 each of Stark, Baratheon, Lannister, Tyrell, and Targaryen, and costs $19.99 USD. Arryn, Greyjoy, Tully and Martell will have to wait ’till next year, we’re guessing. Via Nerdgasmo Be social! Wüf Smart Dog Collar Lets You Talk to Your Pet from Miles Away Posted: 09 Dec 2014 12:50 PM PST Who said that wearables should be exclusive to humans? Wüf is a smart collar for dogs that only enables you to talk to your pooch from a distance, but also train him in a humane manner when you’re around. Since our pets won’t be around forever, it’s good to stay in touch with them as much as possible, even if you’re in a different city or country when doing that. There are plenty of pet surveillance cameras out there, and even smart food bowls, but in the wearables department there aren’t that many options. Enter Wüf, which according to its eponymous developers, is the smartest dog collar in the world. If communication with your pup and training are at the top of your list, as far as your pet’s wellbeing is concerned, then this dog wearable might represent the solution to your problems. Add to that the fact that Wüf also includes a GPS tracker and you really have a great gadget. This means that if your dog has made a habit out of wandering around, you’ll know at all times where he is. Losing a dog is a tragedy, but Wüf puts an end to all that. To do so, it relies a SIM card that has data enabled, so that you can get notifications on your smartphone using the companion app. Wüf is waterproof and shockproof, but most importantly, it’s biteproof. When you have several dogs and they enjoy spending most of the day at each other’s throat, you need to make sure that the smart collar doesn’t get damaged in the process. Battery life shouldn’t be an issue, as the current iteration of the smart collar lasts for 5 days. As long as you remember to charge it periodically, you and your doggy should be fine. To make the jump from a prototype to mass production, Wüf needs to raise $50,000 Kickstarter in the next 19 days. At the time of writing, backers had pledged almost half of the funding goal, and Kicktraq estimates that this will be a success, surpassing the goal by 24%. Pledge $99 or more to get your Wüf smart collar in November 2015. This is great even if you don’t own a dog now, but you’re planning to get one in the near future.

Wearhaus Arc Proves that Headphones Are No Longer Individual Posted: 09 Dec 2014 12:22 PM PST Wearing headphones is not as much about isolating yourself from the crowd, as it is about creating an intimacy bubble around you. And who says there’s only room for one in that bubble? Wearhaus Arc are wireless headphones that enable you to share what you’re listening to with others, without having to produce public disturbance. Social music listening is not exactly a new thing, but until now this was mainly achieved using splitters for wired headphones. The way Wearhaus Arc achieves this is different, and it becomes even more apparent when multiple such headphones placed in a room get paired in several groups. Do you think your friends should listen to this new band you’ve recently discovered? One way to do it is to hand them over your headphones. Assuming that both you and your friend have a pair of Wearhaus Arc, you can now share your music without you stopping from listening to it. Wearhaus Inc., the developers of the Wearhaus Arc wireless headphones thought that it would be nice of using colors to let people know who is listening the same music as them. Some may think that the LED rings are a bit too flashy, but they do add a nice touch to the overall design of the headphones. These wireless headphones are also equipped with a touch-sensitive panel on the right cup, so that users can browse through songs by sliding their finger across it in a certain direction. Playing or pausing the current song (or audiobook) is done by tapping the panel once, and turning the volume up and down can also be done using the touch surface. The app that comes with the headphones lets users choose the color displayed by the LED ring and the other pairs of Wearhaus Arc they’re willing to share their music with. The companion app completes the product nicely, adding some much needed functionality. Wearhaus Inc. turned to Kickstarter to raise the money necessary for mass producing their wireless headphones. The campaign was a major success, as backers pledged more than three times the $50K funding goal. Back the project with $179 in the following 3 days to get your pair of Wearhaus Arc in January 2015.
